Johnny Mac scored "The Goal" and was a key player in the Devils first three deep playoff runs, capped by their first Cup win in 95. He was a gritty competitor with an above average touch around the net, and played a solid defensive game.

The Devils select a goalie that played every game for the Rangers over 5 years before retiring at the age of 31
Dave Kerr (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=18579)
While he came close to personal and team success, it wasn't until 1939-40 when everything fell into place for Kerr. He won the Vezina Trophy, was elected to the First All-Star team, took the team on a league-record 19-game unbeaten streak, played all 48 games for the Blueshirts, and led the Rangers to a Stanley Cup victory over Toronto.

Hedberg 01-11-2006, 10:43 PM Sorry.
Phoenix selects Tiger Williams
Leaf Lander 01-12-2006, 08:59 PM Roy Conacher: -Roy, quiet and modest about his talents, may have been the most naturally gifted hockey player in the family.
He began skating earlier than his brothers and was therefore much smoother on the ice. He combined speed with strength and was a resourceful goal scorer. But his career was interrupted by his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, preventing him from playing in his prime and perhaps establishing himself as the third Conacher superstar in professional hockey.
Bill Cowley, a future Hall of Famer whose style meshed perfectly with the talented Conacher's goal-scoring touch and ability to anticipate plays. Conacher led the league with 26 goals in 47 games in his first season - the first rookie to ever accomplish the feat, a record that wasn't broken until Teemu Selanne came along more than 50 years later.
Led the NHL in goals as a rookie, and won the Art Ross in 49
He was the brother of hockey legends Charlie and Lionel conacher
Roy Conacher, LW -Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/LegendsMember.jsp?mem=P199801)
Sean Burke: A competitive hybrid-style goalie with great size and wingspan, Burke played deep in the net and always stayed square to the shooter and he worked tirelessly on his control flexability and rebound control. Sean was always a workhorse starting goalie who has played almost 800 nhl career games he was one of the league's biggest puck-stoppers at 6-4, 211 pounds. Used his big frame to play an effective stand-up style. He played with savvy and leadership qualities.
He joined the Canadian National Team. He backstopped Canada to 46 victories over two seasons then shared the goalkeeping responsibilities with Andy Moog at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Following Canada's fourth place finish, Burke joined the Devils and caught fire at the right time. He posted a 10-1 record down the stretch and helped New Jersey make the playoffs on the last night of the regular season. In the playoffs, he was superb as the young club made it all the way to the seventh game of the semi-finals.
Sean also backstopped NJ to the conference finals in 88 and played in the 88 and 92 Olympics. He has over 300 career wins and over 30 career nhl shutouts. backstopped the cabadian olympic squad to a silver medal at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. He also lead Team Canada to gold at the 2003 World Championship.
Aside from his Olympic expriences and the 2003 World Championships, Burke has represented his homeland at the 1986 World Juniors and four other times at the World Championships (1987, 1989, 1991 and 1997)

The Devils select a multi-positional and all-around threat in a member of the dreaded S Line
Reginald "Hooley" Smith (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/LegendsMember.jsp?mem=p197205&type=Player&page=bio&list=ByName)
Forward Hooley Smith excelled at several facets of the game during his 17 years in the NHL. A prolific scorer, he retired in 1941 as one of the few skaters to reach the 200-goal mark. Smith was also considered a dogged checker and one of the most physically imposing combatants in the league.
Spitfire11 01-12-2006, 09:43 PM Detroit takes back-to-back 50 goal scorer LW Charlie Simmer
Leaf Lander 01-12-2006, 11:36 PM The Marlies select defenders Barilko Bill and Jimmy Thomson
He was a real team guy. He kept everyone's spirits up the dressing room.
Barilko was pretty raw when he came up with the Leafs. He was a real diamond in the rough, but his game got a lot of polishing from coaches Hap Day and Joe Primeau (who replaced Day to start the 1950-51 season). They brought Barilko along and made him into one of the best defensemen at the time. He was quite a hitter, after all you have to be a good hitter to get the nickname "Bashin'" Bill.
Barilko played during a defensive era but he used his speed to pick his spots to rush the puck up the ice to help toronto on offense. He hit every opponent with equal force and was a rock on Toronto's blueline. In his five NHL seasons, he won four Stanley Cups, scoring, arguably the most dramatic Stanley Cup winning goal.
4 Stanley Cups
Played in NHL All-Star Game (1947, 1948, 1949)
Bill Barilko -Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11916)
Jimmy Thomson was a rugged defenseman and team leader who spent nearly 800 games in the NHL during the 40s and 50s. In addition to his feisty nature he was a fine passer who often helped his club's transition game by carrying the puck up ice efficiently.
In all, "Jeems" supplied toughness and leadership on the Toronto defense for eleven seasons. He was regarded as one of the league's toughest foes and placed on the NHL Second All-Star team in 1951 and 1952. He also participated in seven All-Star Games and was an integral part of Stanley Cup wins in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951. During the 1956-57 season he spent time as the Leaf's captain. Prior to the 1957-58 schedule, Thomson was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks for cash. The deal was a result of Thomson's involvement with Ted Lindsay's attempt to found a player's association

Frightened Inmate #2 01-13-2006, 12:23 AM The New England Whalers select Bill Ranford as their third goaltender as well as Helmut Balderis and Viacheslav Starshinov
Edit: I am working in the Oil Patch right now and as such I am in for one week and gone for two. I will give heads up as to my schedule so those here know when to skip me.
Spitfire11 01-13-2006, 07:47 AM Detroit takes RW Ken Hodge
The Devils are pleased to select the only defenseman with 2 NHL playoff hat tricks
Paul Reinhart (http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1979/79012.html)
As a Flame, Reinhart made a leap directly to the pro ranks, quickly establishing himself as a superior two-way defender with versatility to boot. Although he preferred his blueline duties, he sometimes played on a forward line where some have claimed that 100-point seasons were his for the taking.
But nonetheless, as a rearguard he showed plenty of offensive spark, especially setting up goals. He was also a very strong playoff performer, netting 77 points in 83 contests over the course of his eleven-year career. - Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=14105)

The Devils are pleased to select a two-time Stanley Cup winner and the best defenseman at the 1991 World Championship
Jamie Macoun (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=10994)
He was a hard-nosed stay-at-home defenceman who knew every trick in the book and could pass the puck ahead to his forwards fairly well.
The steady rearguard became a fixture on the Flames as they excelled in the regular season but constantly ran into the unstoppable Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs. In 1986, they finally vanquished their rivals and reached the finals where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens. In May, 1987, Macoun was involved in an automobile accident that resulted in severe nerve damage to his arm. He was forced to sit out the entire 1987-88 season but returned the next year to help the Flames win their first Stanley Cup.

He played most of his first four pro years with the Montreal Canadiens from 1969 to 1973, developing into a true goal-scorer Habs fans were starting to admire.
It was in the WHA that he played the prime six years of his life, joining the Quebec Nordiques midway through the following season and becoming a provincial hero for all French-Canadians in Quebec. In 1975-76 he signed an unprecedented 10-year contract with the Nordiques, then went out and led the league in goals, assists and points. But in the playoffs he suffered a horrific injury in a game against the Calgary Cowboys. He was charged from behind by Rick Jodzio, who hammered Tardif in the chest and head area with his stick. Tardif fell to the ice unconscious, but Jodzio jumped on top of him and continued to punch him violently.
Tardif suffered extensive damage to his mouth and teeth, but he also suffered a brain contusion that at first threatened his very well being.
Remarkably, he continued to play and score and in 1979, when the Nordiques joined the NHL, Tardif was still playing.
After four more years back in the NHL, Tardif retired a hero in Quebec and was given a proud sendoff. His number 8 was retired by the Nordiques near the start of the 1983-84 season.

Leaf Lander 01-15-2006, 06:23 PM The Toronto Marlies select Mathieu Schneider and center Peter Zezel.
Has a great point shot and adds an offensive dimension to any team he plays for. Mathieu is a powerplay quarterback. He is highly skilled has a great shot from the point he skates well laterally, solid passer and he has a mean disposition. At time he has a chris chelios like flair and on ice disposition. He see's the ice during all crusical offfensive moments in a game.
Mathieu won a cup with the habs in 92-93 and has made stops in Montreal NYI, toronto, NYR, LA and Detroit
A three-time Olympian from 1998, 2002 and 2006, Schneider surpassed 1000 games played and 600 points during the 2005-06 season and continues to be one of the premier offensive defensemen in the NHL

Mathieu Schneider -Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11462)
In Peter Zezel's first NHL season, he established a Flyers rookie record of 46 assists while helping the team to a berth in the Stanley Cup finals. He was quickly regarded as one of the league's premier faceoff men and used his tenacious style to earn himself duty on the penalty-killing unit.
Zezel played a vital role in the resurgence of the Maple Leafs in the early 1990's as a checking centre and faceoff specialist, but he also added his share of timely goals using the soft hands and hard shot developed in his junior days.
Zezel's skills were not only limited to the ice. He saw action with the Toronto Blizzard of the North American Soccer League and the North York Rockets of the Canadian Soccer League.
Peter played 873 NHL games scored 219 goals and tallied 608 career points

Ralph Backstrom (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11896)
Ralph Backstrom was a swift skater with a deft scoring touch whose defensive and team-oriented play earned him accolades throughout his career. The most significant years of his pro tenure were spent with the Montreal Canadiens, with whom he won the Stanley Cup six times between 1959 and 1969.
Although he was overshadowed by Montreal's top two centers, Jean Beliveau and Henri Richard, Backstrom became an important two-way forward on six Stanley Cup-winning teams. He and teammate Claude Provost garnered reputations as two of the most dogged forwards in the game. Even though he often drew checking assignments, Backstrom produced five 20-goal seasons, including a personal high of 27 in 1961-62. Years later, Backstrom reflected on this period: "There were times in my career that I felt I could have played better statistically if I would have played on another team besides the Canadiens. But there was nothing like the team successes that the Canadiens had during the time I played with them."

Leaf Lander 01-17-2006, 09:16 AM The Toronto Marlies select Owen Nolan and Mike Palmateer
An impressive combination of strength and skill, since entering the league in 1990-91, Owen Nolan has moved closer to becoming one of the game's dominant power forwards.
Is an excellent all-around performer, capable of leading both his team in scoring and the dressing room. Has good size and an excellent shot. Also chips in defensively. He is a natural scorer who excels on the powerplay. During his time in the nhl he has been one of the best power forwards. He embodies everything you want in a leader and he takes emense pride in being the go to man on the ice. He is great at both ends of the ice and will go to war for teammates. He can play a downright nasty game is a fast skater and is a great triggerman on the powerplay. He is a heart and soul player.
He has played key roles for Quebec/Coloradio SJ and Toronto
Nolan was a part of Canada's Gold Medal team during the Winter Olympic Hockey in Salt Lake
The Toronto Maple Leafs obtained Nolan from the Sharks days before the 2003 NHL trade deadline. Upon his arrival with the Leafs, Nolan has continued to provide grit and strong veteran leadership on the ice, while surpassing the 700 point plateau in 2003-04.
Owen has played 915 games scored 349 goals and tallied 735 points

Owen Nolan, RW - Legends of hockey Player Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11201)
Made headlines in Toronto and became an instant fan favorite when he said "your hunt for a goaltender is over" to Maple Leafs general manager Jim Gregory upon his call-up to the parent team in 1976.Won his first NHL start, which was also his first NHL game.
Mike Palmateer tended goal from the pee-wees to the Toronto Marlboros, right under the noses of Maple Leaf management but It wasn't until early in the 1976-77 campaign that he was brought to Maple Leaf Gardens for an extended stay. Suddenly, fans, analysts, and the club's management were all struck by the little fireball between the Leafs' pipes.
Some described him as a leprechaun in goal pads while others claimed he was brash and overrated and carried a chip on his shoulder. But whether people liked him or not, they couldn't help but be entertained by his dynamic exploits in the crease. He could make saves like a vaudeville dancer falling to the ice and then in an instant, be right back on his feet, ready for the next attack. He was colourful, cantankerous, and cocky while playing his daring game close to the edge.
From 1977 to 1979, with Palmateer in goal, the Leafs fortunes began to rise up from the depths of ineptitude. During the playoffs of 1978, he was a standout as the Leafs ousted the up-and-coming Islanders from the playoffs. But in 1980, Palmateer engaged in a contract dispute with the Leafs. He wanted a three-year deal while the club would offer only two. As a result, he was traded to the Washington Capitals.
In his first season as a Cap, Palmateer was slowed by a series of nagging injuries that included a pulled hamstring, ankle ligament damage, and bone chips in his wrist. Year two got even worse as his action-worn knees began to give way
His career was indecline because of bad knees and as a result, he was forced to hang up his pads at age 30 in 1984.
Nicknamed "The Popcorn Kid" because he ate popcorn before every game.Set NHL record (since broken) for assists by a goaltender in one season with eight in 1980-81. Was forced to give up coaching in 2001 when his troubled knee began giving him problems again and required surgery. Named Toronto amateur scout on June 27, 2002.

Bob Bourne (http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1974/74038.html)
He had excellent speed and offensive skills, but perhaps his greatest weakness was low self-confidence. Playing with the likes of Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy, he didn't think he had the capability to score 30 or 40 goals, though Torrey, coach Al Arbour and his teammates disagreed.
An important quality Bourne brought to the team was focused determination, a characteristic that he acquired naturally from private life. His son Jeffrey suffered from spina bifida and required constant care and attention, and Bourne appreciated perhaps more than most NHL players how lucky he was to have the gifts that allowed him to play in the NHL. During his prime years, the Islanders won the Cup four consecutive times, from 1980 to 1983 and Bourne's leadership was a key ingredient in all of those wins.

Bob Davidson played his entire 12-year NHL career in a Toronto Maple Leafs' uniform, from 1934 to 1946. Known as one of the top defensive forwards in the NHL. After his playing days were over he stayed on with the Leafs organisation in a number of different capacities his most notable was as Cheif Scout. Bob is considered by many to be one of the best hockey scouts of all time and was credited with building the Toronto Maple Leafs teams during the 1960's which dominated the NHL by winning the Stanley Cup four times (1961/62, 1962/63, 1962/54, 1966/67) within a six year period. Bob Davidson served as Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1943 to 1945.
Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=14584)
Throughout his career in hockey, Ian Turnbull was a natural, rushing defenseman and puck-handler who knew what to do in the other guy's end of the rink. He started out in the youth hockey programs of Montreal where he quickly discovered that he was naturally better at the sport than most of the other kids around the neighborhood.
He continued being a superior performer right up the ranks to the junior level where he skated for the Montreal Junior Canadiens and, later, the Ottawa 67's of the OHA from 1969 to 1973. In his final year as an amateur, he skated with Islanders great Denis Potvin Turnbull was picked up by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1973 Amateur Draft. He and the stalwart Borje Salming were teamed together to form one of the more accomplished defensive pairings in the league. All was progressing according to plan until a second-year collision occurred between Turnbull and Blues' enforcer Bob Plager. Turnbull ended up tearing knee ligaments that severely limited his action during the 1974-75 campaign.
After a year of healing, he bounced back, establishing himself as a premiere offensively capable rearguard. In 1977, however, he slipped into a lengthy scoring drought. He waited until a match against the Detroit Red Wings on the night of February 2 to break free from his malaise. He became the first blueliner to score five goals in one game en route to a 9-1 pasting of the Wings. The record still stands today. He ranks 3 rd all time in leafs defensive scoring and holds leafs record for points by defensman in asing season(79)

The Devils are pleased to select the first player to win the Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal in the same year
Ken Morrow (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=13786)
After Morrow started playing with the Islanders, he quickly proved he was an NHL-caliber player. The team's front office felt so confident with him in the lineup that they traded veterans Bill Harrison and Dave Lewis to the L.A. Kings for Butch Goring, the last player the Isles needed to put together a Cup-winning team.
Morrow was never a great goal scorer. In his best season with the Islanders, he accumulated only 19 points from one goal and 18 assists, but he made a significant contribution to the game in many other ways. In the 1983-84 playoffs, for example, he registered only three points, but two of them were crucial to the team's success. One was the winning goal in overtime that eliminated the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs; the other was an assist on the game-winning goal by Mike Bossy in the fourth game of the semifinals against Montreal.
In all, Morrow played 10 seasons in the NHL and was a member of the New York Islanders dynasty teams of 1980 to 1983 that won the Stanley Cup four straight times. Plagued by knee problems late in his career, Morrow was forced into early retirement.

Mike Ricci (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11367)
He's a real tough guy. Fearless in the corners and battles hard for the puck every shift. In a word...Relentless.
Is a premier face-off man, very responsible in the defensive zone and one of the best back-checking forwards in the NHL. Elevates his play in crucial games.Ricci is a true NHL character. He was a offensively gifted player earlier in his career. Over the years, Ricci's game has evolved away from the finesse style of his junior days towards a more defensive approach although he still spots his share of goals and assists. He continues to play a game replete with leadership, character, and dogged defense.
He had TREMENDOUS heart. If he could play all 60 minuites he probably would. Great veteran and his talents will trickle down to anyone hes with. He isn't the best player in terms of points scored, but he can provide the grit that any good third or fourt line needs to wear down or check an opponent.
He would withstand a boatload of puishment to bang in a goal. Ricci scored a lot close to the crease, withstood the beatings and late in his career we see its toll. The passion would be screaming out of him he even scored a few falling down on his back. He has played just over 1000 nhl games and has nearly 600 career points.
Glen Wesley (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11734)
Glen Wesley was extremely reliable in the defensive zone. Shows great leadership among his fellow rearguards. Plays against top talent and usually holds his own. In his prime years he put up good offensive numbers. He was a key defensive component for boston and carolina as both teams went to the finals once each.He has played nearly 1300 nhl games and has over 500 career points.

To a younger generation of hockey fans, Ed Westfall is likely better known for his hockey broadcasting history, mainly with the New York Islanders. But for those who remember hockey in the 1960s and 1970s, Ed Westfall was a successful NHL forward, playing 18 years in the big league.
Westfall's professional career began in 1961 when he suited up for 63 games with the Boston Bruins. He was known as a defensive specialist and the Bruins were not disappointed with what they had. Westfall scored just twice while assisting on nine others in his first year. Westfall's first notable offensive season came in 1964-65, when he managed 12 goals and 15 assists in 65 games. His mandate was to keep the opposition away from Bruins' goaltenders Eddie Johnston and Gerry Cheevers, and he performed that function admirably.

Nevin scored 21 goals as a rookie in 1960-61 and finished runner-up in the Calder trophy voting to teammate Dave Keon. The hard working forward played solid two-way hockey for the Leafs playing with Red Kelly and Frank Mahovlich and helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1962 and 1963. In February 1964 he was part of the package assembled to acquire star forward Andy Bathgate from the New York Rangers.
Nevin played over seven years in New York and topped the 20-goal mark five times. He helped the Blueshirts become one of the top outfits in the NHL and registered 107 points in 1970-71. A respected leader on the ice and in the dressing room, Nevin began a six-year run as team captain in 1965-66.

Despite his free spirit, he was a brilliant stickhandler who played hard and earned the favor of fans everywhere. Reg formed one of hockey's great early lines with right winger Cecil "Babe" Dye and center Corb Denneny. Noble won a pair of Cups in Toronto, serving as both player-coach and captain and added a third with the Montreal Maroons in 1925-26, where his experience helped settle a young squad. A gritty competitor, Noble suffered a fractured skull when clipped by the stick of Ottawa’s Hooley Smith in a 1925-26 game, but was back in the Maroons lineup after missing just four contests.

Thomas battled injuries his first two years with the Hawks before scoring 40 goals in 1989-90. In October 1991, he joined the New York Islanders in a trade and helped the club upset the Pittsburgh Penguins while reaching the semi-finals in 1993. Thomas set a career high with 42 goals in 1993-94 but slipped to eleven goals during the lockout-shortened season. The Devils are pleased to select a player who led his team in goals and points, and finished 3rd in all-star voting at right wing in both 2002-03 and 2003-04
Marian Hossa (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11297)
In the same season he appeared briefly with the Senators but his next season was delayed by a serious knee injury. In the end, he played 60 games and spent most of his time doing defensive work on the checking line. But when he began scoring goals and collecting points, he seemed to be making up for lost time. He played only two-thirds of the season, but in the voting for the Calder Trophy he came in second after Chris Drury. His solid performance also earned him selection on the NHL All-Rookie Team and once the Senators were eliminated from the post season, he made his second appearance at the World Championships.
Hossa gave the game everything he had. It was becoming clear that Ottawa was offering him the opportunity to be a major player on their team. They started comparing him with Jaromir Jagr, who at the same age conducted himself in a similar manner
In 1999-00 Hossa tied for the team league in goals with 29 and over the next three seasons topped the 30-goal mark twice and 40-goal mark once. On the internation stage, Hossa went on to represent his homeland for the third time at 2001 World Championships and for the first time at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
One of the elite players in the NHL, Hossa went on to finish fifth in leauge scoring in 2003-04 with a career 82 points (36-46-82). Although his NHL season came to an abrupt end in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Hossa would suit up for Team Slovakia at the 2004 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.

The Devils are proud to select a goalie who has played 60+ games for 7 straight years, and on pace for an another, and owns a stellar .930 sv% in the playoffs
Olaf Kolzig (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=18308)
He played junior hockey for the New Westminster Bruins and Tri-City Americans, with whom he became the first goalie in WHL history to score a goal, in a game on November 29, 1989. He led that high-scoring circuit with a 3.48 goals-against average in 1988-89, prompting the Washington Capitals to draft him in the first round 19th overall in the 1989 Entry Draft.
In 1994, he was named most valuable player in the AHL playoffs after his Portland Pirates won the Calder Cup championship. His exploits earned him a permanent spot on the Washington roster, at first as backup to Jim Carey for three years.
During the first round of the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Vezina Trophy-winning Carey began to play poorly, and Kolzig took over admirably, posting a 1.94 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in five appearances against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In one game, which lasted into a fourth overtime period, Kolzig played all 139 minutes and 15 seconds, saving 62 of 65 Pittsburgh shots. Petr Nedved finally scored on him to give the Penguins a 3-2 victory. The Penguins won the series, but Kolzig had won the affection of the Washington fans, who nicknamed him "Olie the Goalie."
In 1997, after a disappointing season in which the Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time since 1982, Carey was traded to Boston and Kolzig earned the number-one job. He won 33 games, played in his first NHL All-Star Game, stopping 14 of 17 shots in his one period of action, and was the key to Washington's excellent performance in the 1998 playoffs. He tied an NHL record with four shutouts, and the Caps made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the defending champions, the Detroit Red Wings.
Kolzig has continued to be the Capitals' workhorse between the pipes, playing 73 games and a league leading 4370 minutes in 1999-2000. In 2000 he was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender and was a First Team All-Star.

Leaf Lander 01-24-2006, 10:51 PM The Toronto Marlies select Center Marty Barry and Centre Ivan Boldirev
Wherever he played, Marty Barry was a productive center whose work ethic was lauded by teammates and opponents alike. His stamina and dedication made him one of the most consistent and durable performers of his era. Between 1929 and 1939, he missed only two NHL regular season games
A proficient scorer, he was known by the local sportswriters as "Goal-a-Game" Barry.
If we had Cooney Weiland, we’d be here," Ross expressed of Detroit’s all-star center. "If I had Marty Barry," Adams countered, referring to the Boston center, "we’d win the Stanley Cup."
The deal was consummated in June, with Barry and Art Giroux coming to Detroit for Weiland and Walt Buswell.
That April, Adams was proven a prophet. Barry finished second in NHL scoring with 40 points and the Wings whipped Toronto to win their first title. Barry was third in league scoring the following year and led all playoff snipers with 11 points as Detroit retained its crown.
The 1936-37 season was Barry’s finest. He earned selection to the First All-Star Team, was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy and scored two goals in Detroit’s 3-0 Cup-clinching victory over the New York Rangers, including the Cup winner.
"First, they award me the Lady Byng Trophy and then I score two goals tonight," Barry said after that game. "I guess I was celebrating."
Barry led the Wings in scoring in three of his four seasons with the club and the unit of Barry, Larry Aurie and Herbie Lewis was recognized as the NHL’s most effective forward line.
"He was a very smooth centerman," teammate Carl Liscombe remembered of Barry. "He had the talent to get the puck by everyone. In that sense, Marty was one of the best."
He gained a place in the Red Wings Hall of Fame in 1944 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965

His best season came in 1981-82 when he scored 33 goals playing on a line with Dave "Tiger" Williams and Tony Currie notched eight playoff markers as the club reach the Stanley Cup finals for the first time.
He played for : Boston;California;Chicago;Atlanta;Vancouve and Detroit

Jim Neilson (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=13830)
Defenceman Jim Neilson played the body well and moved the puck up ice to his forwards with consistency. He played over 1,000 games and was an underrated member of the fine New York Rangers teams of the early 1970s.
Neilson looked solid as a rookie paired with Doug Harvey in 1962-63 and became a fixture on the New York defence for a dozen seasons. In 1967-68 he played superior defence and scored 35 points, which earned him selection to the NHL second all-star team. "Chief" scored a career-high ten goals and 44 points the next year then helped the Blueshirts become one of the league's elite clubs. In 1968-69, he was paired with rookie Brad Park and was credited with making a huge difference in the youngster's game.

Simon Gagne (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=16752)
He was an NHL regular just a year after being drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1998. The skilled, speedy forward posted huge numbers during his final year of Junior, then stepped right into the Flyers lineup and posted 20 goals without a day spent in the minor leagues.
Gagne not only managed 48 points as a rookie, but he continued to score in the post season by adding five goals and 10 points during 17 playoffs games. He was named to the NHL's All-Rookie Team for his efforts. The young center blossomed into a bonafide star during his second season with the Flyers when he scored 27 goals and 59 points in just 69 games. He continued the hot start to his career in 2001-02, but his greatest accomplishment occurred away from the NHL.
Gagne, who posted 33 goals and 66 points for the Flyers was one of the young players selected to the primarily veteran-laden Canadian Olympic roster for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Gagne chipped in a goal and three assists in six games en route to capturing the Gold Medal for Canada.
On the international stage, Gagne was instrumental in leading Team Canada to the 2004 World Cup of Hockey title and helped Canada capture the silver medal at the 2005 World Championship.

Leaf Lander 01-26-2006, 02:58 PM The Toronto Marlies select:
Defenceman Robert Svehla
Has a great point shot and is a heavy hitter from the blueline. Makes smooth passes and quick decisions. Can play an important role on the power play.
At the age of 25 he was still considered a rookie, but on the ice he didn't look at all like the typical nervous greenhorn. Instead, he became one of the team's workhorses. Former coach Doug MacLean called him the toughest player to come into his hands during his three years with the Panthers. Svehla could get respect in front of the net. As an experienced skater, he cleared space at the net and attacked near the boards just as strongly. But he wasn't getting about 30 minutes of ice time per game for those reasons alone. He brought the Panthers perspective and a talent for clever passing and hard shooting

Ulf Nilsson (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=13854)
Nilsson was one of the players who introduced Swedish hockey to Canada when in 1974 he made his debut with the WHA's Winnipeg Jets, where his partner in offense was another great Swedish forward, Anders Hedberg. Both were often among the league's best scorers and, thanks to the Swedish duo's excellent performance, the Winnipeg Jets twice won the Avco Cup.
The legendary Bobby Hull, partnered with Hedberg and Nilsson, was able once again to demonstrate his extraordinary ability and set his amazing scoring record of 1,000 goals. The very fact that such a unique international trio existed deserves mention in any hockey encyclopedia.
Nilsson made his debut with the Swedish national team at the 1972 Izvestia Cup Tournament in Moscow. The next year, again in Moscow, he took part in his first World Championship along with Swedish aces Ulf Sterner and Stig Goran Johansson.
At the 1976 Canada Cup, he played exceptionally well for Tre Kronor and in a game against the USSR scored the decisive goal against Vladislav Tretiak. Nilsson was also included on the NHL All-Star Team pitted against the USSR at the 1979 Challenge Cup tournament.
The most memorable game for Nilsson was the one between the Winnipeg Jets and the USSR in 1978 in Winnipeg, which the Canadian team won 5-3. In that game, Hull scored three goals, Nilsson scored two, and the Nilsson-Hull-Hedberg trio won their own game against one of the world's best lineups, the Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov trio.

The Devils are pleased to select a goalie often hailed as the "most technically sound goaltender in the league"
Gilles Meloche (http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1970/70070.html)
Gilles Meloche was a talented netminder who appeared in nearly 800 games during the 1970s and '80s. He was a true workhorse who saw action in at least 40 games 13 times in his career. His best years came with the strong Minnesota North Stars clubs in the early '80s.
The young backstopper welcomed the trade that brought him to the defensively weak California Golden Seals. During the 1971-72 season, he created a stir by registering four shutouts and a 3.33 goals against average. He continued to provide goaltending heroics for the next few years including the franchise's two-year relocation to Cleveland.
Following the Barons' merge with the Minnesota North Stars, Meloche started to experience winning. In 1979-80, he backstopped the club to 27 wins and led them to a quarterfinals victory over the Montreal Canadiens which ended their four-Cup dynasty. The next year, he combined with youngster Don Beaupre to form one of the best goalkeeping tandems in the league. Meloche took part in the NHL All-Star Game and won eight playoff games during Minnesota's run to the finals.
Meloche continued to work his share of games for the North Stars through the 1984-85 season. In 1982, he won a bronze medal when he represented Canada at the World Championships and helped Minnesota reach the semi-finals in 1984. - Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=18625)
"One night at the Oakland Alemeda County Coliseum the Canadiens were bombarding Seals goaltender Gilles Meloche, who must have faced 50 shots, but didn't score on him until the third period when Yvan Cournoyer got a breakaway. The fans saluted Meloche with a long, emotional standing ovation. It was the only time I saw a home-team goalie cheered after he had just been scored on. The game ended 2-2. I'm sorry Meloche didn't win." - Dick Irvin, My 26 Stanley Cups

C/W Sidney Crosby
Crosby very well may be a generational player, a talent with skill that only comes around every 15-20 years. He played his junior hockey with the QMJHL Rimouski Oceanic.
There is very little he doesn’t do extremely well. He’s a wizard with the puck and has vision and playmaking ability which some have compared to that of Wayne Gretzky. He has a good repertoire of shots and can score from anywhere in the offensive zone. It’s not just his incredible offensive talents that make him such a highly touted prospect, but his ability to get it done all over the ice. Strong on his skates, Crosby isn’t afraid of physical play and uses his body to knock opponents off the puck. Crosby is an effective back-checker and knows his role in his own zone. Crosby also demonstrated that he’s chippy, putting up 84 penalty minutes this season.

Marty McSorley (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11093)
Since debuting in the NHL in 1983-84, defenceman Marty McSorley has developed into one of the toughest customers in the game. His ability to rush with the puck and utilize a quick shot from the point has made him a prominent member of several NHL clubs.
In 1985, he was picked up by the Edmonton Oilers and was an important physical deterrent when the club dominated the NHL through the regular season. The next year, he experienced the euphoria of a Stanley Cup win and contributed four playoff goals in addition to muscle. In 1987-88, McSorley scored nine goals and played in a variety of situations for the Oilers when they repeated as Cup Champs.
McSorley was part of the monumental trade of Wayne Gretzky to the L.A. Kings in August 1988. He spent five years providing offense, grit, and a winning attitude on his new club. In 1993, he was a key factor with ten points as the Kings reached the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in franchise history.

The Devils are pleased to add another big man up the middle in one of the league's best forwards who is not necessarily the best at any one thing in particular
Keith Primeau (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11321)
In Harford, Primeau was finally free to become more of a front-line warrior. By the time the Whalers transferred to Carolina, he had established himself as a strong skating giant with soft hands. In more recent years, he has been characterized as one of the league's best forwards who is not necessarily the best at any one thing in particular.
After three seasons in the Hartford/Carolina organization, Primeau was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyres in the summer of 1999. Prior to joining the Flyers, Primeau suited up Canada's Olympic Team at the 1998 Nagano Games. Upon his arrival in Philly, Primeau has fit in nicely, playing the tough, well-balanced brand of hockey that Flyers fans have come to appreciate.
During the 2003-04 season, Primeau was instrumental in leading the Flyers to the Eastern Conference Final, while reaching the 900-game and the 600-point plateau.

He fears no one and is a very capable 4th line player who isnt a liability on the ice.He has decent hands and can chip in a timely goal.
Donald Brashear , LW -Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=14952)
As head coach of the Flyers he lead them too two successful seasons in first and second place in the Campbell Conference. The Flyers recorded an NHL record 35 game winning streak under Quinn, who went on to sign a five-year contract with the team in 1981. But to the amazement of most Flyers fans, he was fired in just the second year of the deal. Quinn responded by enrolling in law school, continuing to draw his Flyers paycheck and keeping abreast of NHL activity by watching games on TV.
After being let go from the Flyers, Quinn wasn't finished with controversy in the coaching department. In 1987, back in the coaching game with the Los Angeles Kings, Quinn was suspended from the NHL for several months because he had accepted a $100,000 signing bonus to become president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks while still under contract with L.A. The Canucks were also fined by league president John Ziegler for paying Quinn the bonus, as were the Kings for not reporting the deal promptly.
Nevertheless, Quinn coached 11 seasons in Vancouver, leading the team to a narrow loss to the New York Rangers in a seven-game Stanley Cup finals in 1994 before coming back to the Maple Leafs for the 1998-99 season. He quickly made his presence felt, telling fans and reporters he had definite plans for his new team, one that had been a little flat in the goal-scoring department in past years.
Quinn certainly became a big hit in his early days with the team he once played with, leading them to their first playoff appearance since 1996 and their third trip to the conference finals in the 1990s. Quinn also led the team to a club-record 45 wins. He finished the season as runner-up for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year and during the off-season was named general manager of the Leafs as well. A short time later, he was named coach of Canada's Olympic entry for Salt Lake City in 2002. He was named coach of Team Canada for the 2006 Turin Olympics

The Devils are pleased to select as their coach "Badger Bob"
Bob Johnson (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/LegendsMember.jsp?mem=b199202&type=Builder&page=bio&list=ByName)
Bob Johnson was one of the most popular and successful hockey teachers and administrators in the amateur and pro ranks. His effervescent personality combined with a technical knowledge of the game to make him a natural leader wherever he worked.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Johnson played hockey in the City Park Board League, was an all-star in high school and took on his first coaching assignment at the age of 13 when he guided a local midget team. During his years playing forward at the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota, he spent much of his time coaching high school teams. Johnson led Minnesota to two conference championships and was the team's top scorer.
In 1956, Johnson became the head coach of the Warroad high school in rural Minnesota. After one season he moved to Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis and won four city championships in six seasons. In 1963, he took the post at Colorado College and after three years he moved on to the University of Wisconsin. Johnson guided the Badgers for 15 years, captured three national titles and was named the NCAA's top coach in 1977. During this period he also coached the U.S. national team from 1973 to 1975 and the Olympic team at the Innsbruck games in 1976. He later coached the Americans at the 1981 and 1984 Canada Cups.
"It's a great day for hockey." -Johnson’s famed line

The Devils are pleased to select a defenseman with a healthy +321 career +/-
Bill Hajt (http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1971/71033.html)
He made his presence quietly felt during his 14 seasons with the Sabres. He was never a flashy player or a media darling, but he came up negative in the plus/minus column only once in his 13 full seasons with Buffalo. He played in 854 games, and registered 42 goal and 202 assists before a series of injuries led to his retirement in 1987. - Legends of Hockey Bio (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=12811)
During his 14 years as a Buffalo Sabre, Bill Hajt fulfilled the role of consummate team player from his position on the blueline, to a degree perhaps unparalleled in team history.
In his initial pro-season, 1972-73, he helped spark the Sabre's American Hockey League affiliate, the Cincinnati Swords, to the Calder Cup Championship. After 66 games with the Swords the following season, Hajt landed in Buffalo in 1974-75 as a defensive key to a squad generally considered the Sabres' best ever, a squad which fell only two games shy of a Stanley Cup Championship.
Hajt steadied the Sabres' backline for 13 additional seasons as an old-school "stay-at-home" defenseman. He seldom rushed the puck in the fashion of many defensemen of the times, and his style of play was not calculated to bring the fans out of their seats with wild applause. His positive contributions were too subtle, too routine for most fans to appreciate. For instance, Bill used his size and strength not to punish opposing forwards with thunderous body checks, but to steer them away from the goal area while stripping the puck. While not a frequent shot-blocker, Hajt was always in position to make the smart, safe play. Hajt's steady, reliable manner gave his defense partners the confidence to take chances, secure in the knowledge that the dependable, "defenseman's defenseman" would cover up. - Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame (http://www.buffalosportshallfame.com/Class_of_2000/Bill_Hajt/bill_hajt.html)

Hedberg drafted too many forwards, rather than make him drop somebody he drafted several rounds ago, that somebody else might have wanted, I added another round for an extra spare. You don't have to use it, but it's their if you do.
Leaf Lander 02-05-2006, 03:04 PM The Marlies select:
Sid Smith, LW (http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=14376)
Some of Smith's many goals were momentous, including an overtime goal in the 1951 Stanley Cup finals against Montreal, a series that featured extra-time thrillers in each of the five games it took for Toronto to win its fifth Cup in six years. He also scored the winning goal in the first televised Maple Leafs game, against the Boston Bruins on November 1, 1952.
A model of consistency, Smith recorded six consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals, achieving that distinction in 1954-55 along with Gordie Howe. Only four others had been so reliable?Cy Denneny, Brian Hextall, Maurice Richard and Ted Lindsay?and Smith led the Leafs in scoring categories for eight seasons, four times for goals and four times for total points. Twice Smith was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy as the league's most gentlemanly player, in 1951, when he cracked the top 10 in league scoring with 51 points, and again in 1955, when he recorded a career-high 33 goals. Three times he was a league All-Star, earning First Team honors in 1955. He played in the All-Star Game in seven of his eight full seasons in the NHL. When Teeder Kennedy retired at the beginning of the 1955-56 season, Smith was elected the team captain, a role he filled with his quiet brand of leadership for one season before Kennedy returned to put the "C" back on his sweater in late 1956.
In 1957-58 Smith retired after Twelve games. At the time of his retirement, only three active players?Howe, Richard and Lindsay?had scored more goals. He was the Leafs' top goal scorer of the decade and was involved in 25% of the team's scoring plays during his highly productive stay.
He should be in the HOF
