A Good Flying Bird* 10-22-2003, 05:50 PM Well that's a little better
• The first period was about the most boring hockey one could ever watch. That's Blue Jacket Hockey for you.
• Wouldn't Marc Denis be a better option for Colorado than Aebischer? I never see him have a bad game. I have seen him play spectacularly.
Why did they they choose Abby over Denis
• The NHL Has Figured Out Pavel Datsyuk, Part 43. Wow. In twenty second, Datsyuk ripped open a boring, scoreless tie. Beautiful pass to Hull.
And then an amazing goal. Good to see Pavel rewarded for some good work tonight. He's really improved his defensive game.
• And Hull finally woke up. (Though anyone outside of Hull vs. the Canadiens would have scored on the Datsyuk pass)
• Shanahan looked better on the Hull/Datsyuk line. Great shot on the Holmstrom goal. Truthfully, I don't think Holmstrom touched it.
• Fischer is looking a little more than the old, tentative, sometimes-confused Fischer who often roomed in Scotty's Dog House. He turned a good
scoring chance into a Columbus goal with his reluctance to shoot the puck (although, in his defense, why wasn't anyone backing up the play).
• Schneider also coughed one up in the first that nearly ended up behind Legace. For awhile, this looked a lot like the team that lost to the Pens and
Habs.
• Jiri Hudler didn't look terribly out of place. His hard work lead to the powerplay on which Holmstrom scored. Still, he seems afraid to challenge
NHL defensemen, choosing instead to curl and pass it off.
• Beautiful shorthanded goal by Whitney after a great pass from Zetterberg.
We've got to get Zetterberg more involved in the play.
• Yzerman made a nice pass to Shanahan on the Holmstrom goal, but he seemed pretty invisible tonight. I'm not sure he should be centering a scoring
line. I like him on the first powerplay unit. But for regular lines I'd rather go:
Whitney Zetterberg Shanahan
Hudler Datsyuk Hull
Grind line
Williams Yzerman Holmstrom
Or, perhaps switch Hudler and Yzerman. Hull and Yzerman have pretty good chemistry.
• Is it me, or does our grind line seem a little lethargic?
I was kind of surprised at the chemistry between Pavel, Brett and Shanny...they seemed to click rather nicely.
I figured it wouldn't be long before Brett snapped out of his doldrums, and to see he and Pavel get the chemistry working together again was great...Pavel to Brett and 23 seconds later he returns the favor and Marc Denis gets a lesson in how to get thoroughly smoked by Pavel Datsyuk...too beautiful for words. I wonder if this line might stay together for a bit?
I agree with you on the Holmstrom goal...I don't think he touched it...I really believe that should have been Shanny's goal all the way. And good to see Ray Whitney score short handed against his old mates...kinda rubs the salt in the wound a little more, eh?
This should help them get ready for Dallas on Friday night...let's hope the momentum is there then.
Motown Beatdown 10-22-2003, 06:21 PM • Is it me, or does our grind line seem a little lethargic?
Couldn't agree more. It's time to split them up. The Grind line works great in the playoffs because the refs let more stuff go. All three of them hardly have a scoring touch combined. So you cant expect much in term of offensive productions. And whats been the Wings weakness? 5 on 5 scoring.
Let Maltby, Draper, McCarty do their crash and bang routine with better skilled fowards. So when these guys do what they do best, and it results in a turn over, there will be someone there take advantage of it.
Just off the top of my head
Whitney-Yzerman-McCarty
Maltby-Datsyuk-Hull
Zetterberg-Draper-Shanny
Hudler-Williams-Homer
PigPen 10-22-2003, 06:23 PM Fischer had 2 bad shifts this game, but the rest were good.
One shift where he overhandled the puck a great deal and ended up coughing it up in our own end but a forward (Zetterburg or Whitney) got it out just as the BlueJacket's forward touched the puck.
The second noticably bad shift was the one where he carried the puck to the other team's slot and overhandled the puck. The turnover turned into a 2-on-1 and the other team scored as usual, but don't blame him entirely for it. There should have been at least one forward back due to the system we play.
He's trying too hard to carry his defensive partner(s) like Chelios and Dandy. He'll be playing mistake-free hockey like he was in the first 3 games in no time.
Yzerman was hustling like crazy out there. He didn't have as good a game offensively as he has the other 4 (not counting the pens, of course) but he did make some nifty defensive plays and win key draws. That's all he really has to do.
Hull has been awake since the pens' game. The puck seemed to follow him around in the Habs' game as well. The habs just outhustled the wings. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to put it in the net till tonight.
Maltby and Draper have looked good thus far especially on the PK but McCarty...he really needs to be on a different line for now. The grind line is becoming redundant and overused. There was a pretty damn good reason why Bowman only played them together in the post season.
golfmade 10-22-2003, 11:29 PM I heard there was a fight near the end of the game and Hudler got involved... did he really get involved or was he just trying to keep players away?

Hmm... I don't remember seeing Hudler in that at all, although I was not paying much attention. I just saw Shanahan and Ling.
Ok the game is being replayed right now and there's 10 minutes left in the third, so I'll report back in a couple of minutes.
Alright, Hudler was pulling Richardson out of the scrum. So yeah, very light involvement.

It's no big deal, just I was listening to the broadcast on NHL.com and they said Hudler was on the ice during the fight so just wondering if he had the guts to get involved at all hehe
That small a guy? What - have we got another Pat Verbeek on our hands?
I didn't remember him being involved - I only remember Shanny and the other guy. Wasn't much of a fight anyway. :joker:

Pat Verbeek= Little Ball of Hate
Jiri Hudler = (hopefully) Little Ball of Skill
Actually, Verbeek was damn skilled, too.
KeithBWhittington 10-23-2003, 06:05 AM it seems whenever columbus plays a divisonal team or the Alavanche, thier offense is anemic, even at Nationwide. I guess us Jackets fans can say well Cassels is out, which pretty much eliminates Sanderson and Vyborny as offensive contributors too. We also deperately need a proven 2nd line right winger at the moment, Kent McDonell isn't the answer in that position, Pirjeta, who I feel would complement Nash well (both are big and maybe some of Nash's physical game will rub off on Pirjeta) Hasn't really been giving a shot, Trevor Letowski (who should be on the third line, no higher) is down for a few more weeks. Espen Knutsen hasn't been the same since year 2. Give C-bus a proven 2nd liner on the Right Side and maybe we can get some more offense.
Glad to see Whitney is fitting in well, Always thought he was a class player and this Jackets fan isn't going to be bitter, We needed Whitney to play hard on Defense too, and Doug MacLean felt he couldn't and didn't warrant the contract he wanted. I miss Whitney on the point for CBJ but I also miss Stevey Heinze.
a few Notes:
Glad to see Jiri Fischer getting the ice time he deserves, the Hatcher injury really opened the door for him
Jiri Hudler, wow, I didn't realize this guy was so small, kinda like a Martin St. Louis or Phillipe Marc Bouchard, skilled though.
Legace was amazing again, does he always play that way, or just against columbus?
PigPen 10-23-2003, 10:57 AM He always plays that way. Legace has turned into an amazing goalie for the wings.
I couldn't help but laugh when I saw Hudler stand in front of the net, get flung about 5 feet down the ice then skate to the front of the net again and park himself there to take another beating. It's a good thing though, seeing a 19 year old kid who's only 5'9" driving to the net like somebody who's 6'2"

This is how small Hudler is. I saw him standing next to Zetterberg, and Zetterberg looked like a giant.
golfmade 10-23-2003, 12:47 PM Is Hudler getting more ice time?
It's awesome to hear though that he's not too shy, let's hope he can get a goal soon!
Vyacheslav 10-23-2003, 01:13 PM a 19 year old kid who's only 5'9" driving to the net like somebody who's 6'2"
I agree with NGO on this one, he looks small and I don't think he is 5'9". I'd say he's closer to 5'7".
Just remember, good things come in small packages - like rat poison and dynamite.
Wingboy2999 10-23-2003, 03:51 PM Holy crap. If he is that small.....wow. Who flung him 5 feet? Hopefully he has the skill to overcome the whole size drawback.
Vyacheslav 10-23-2003, 04:31 PM Just remember, good things come in small packages
Whenever I tell a girl that, she seems to laugh at me.

LOL!
Wingboy2999 10-23-2003, 05:23 PM I just saw that goal by Hull. Holy crap! That was a sweet as hell move by Pavel Datsyuk.
