The Avs acquired winger Steve Konowalchuk from the Washington Capitals in exchange for winger Bates Battaglia and prospect Jonas Johansson.
Don't we have someone comprable of Konowalchuk that we could have traded for a package like that?
I see these trades go down that look like nice trades we could have made, and of course we always end up with a potential questionable trade.

Do you really think a conference rival would offer the same deal?

Of course not, but don't you think that's a steep price?
Also, it just lowers the selection of players we have to choose from when they call for Burke.

Yes, I do think it was a very steep price. I think Washington got the better of the deal by far. And Yes I sure would have traded Burke to the Avs for Johansson ... but was he even offered to the Coyotes?
konowalchuk recieves glowing accolades from those that post about his performances...in my op he is a huge 3rd line upgrade over battaglia
johanson tilts the deal in wash favor if he pans out in the future.
a great move by the av's and a hopeful move for the caps.
i would not have traded burke for a prospect but will accept the 2nd or better he will bring when our season is over, let draper roll the dice in the draft for us.
as to the original question seems even us pretend gm's view value and return quite different.
with all the teams looking for d help now makes you wonder what our 3 dearly departed d men would bring this week

What does amuse me is how some Colorado fans insisted JJ would never be traded for an old injury prone goalie... instead he's been traded as a throw in for an old injury prone third line role player(!) Not to mention Battaglia as well. Essentially both JJ AND Vrbata for Konowalchuk.
I dont think we had anyone to offer that was the same as Konowalchuk though who is pretty decent at what he does. A pity as I would have liked to see JJ and Sjostrom together.

Those of us who understand giving up on your future to succeed now knew that Colorado would do something like this. It happens every year for cup contenders but at face value (especially on these boards) you would never ever consider such a transaction. To take that type of stance is easy to say when you are not the actual GM of an NHL franchise.
I really like Steve Konowalchuk. Right now he is the best player in that deal; hands down. He has a bad injury history but he's an elite third line player. He has character and does all of the little things very well. Colorado doesn't need any more goal scorers but they are short on character guys with skill who can play those third line duties that are essential if you want to hold a lead or play a close checking game. He's really a very unsung hero for that Washington franchise. Battaglia is a notch or three below Konowalchuk. Johansson is a very good prospect. It was a good deal for Washington; one that they couldn't turn down. McPhee keeps lucking out on these types of deals (first with Philli and now Colorado). This is what happens when you are short on quality assets and why Phoenix is holding out for a larger return on Burke.
For Phoenix to have pulled off a similar type deal I harken back to the rumors from a month ago of Burke and Mike Johnson to Colorado for Battaglia and Skoula. I wonder how much truth there was to that offer.
