Scott Gomez

I'd like to see Gomez in Pitts....I feel he could use a change of scenery and could fit well with the Pens (and center the 1st line when Mario retires)...what are some takes on what NJ would want in return?

Hrm, not sure if Pittsburgh has what we (or at least what I'd want) for Gomez. If he is dealt, I'd be hoping for a proven 30-35 goal scoring center or wing who is under 28 in return (in some sort of package, not necessarily for Gomer straight up).

If we were to deal Gomez for a non-center, our centers would be Madden, Larionov, Rasmussen, and Rupp. Not exactly the scariest collection I've ever seen.

I assume the Pens' 1st rounder next year is off limits. I don't think we're in the market for Straka just yet, given Lamoriello's recent "our payroll is still too high" comments.

Yeah, for Gomez the Penguins would have to give NJ a goal-scoring forward in return (preferbly someone who can play center/wing-NOT A PROSPECT) and/or picks in return. And the only player who *could* fit that description would be Straka, but I think his salary is too much of a weight to make such a deal happen.

Well, for now. Situations have a way of changing in a few months.

I'd send Gomez, Gionta or Berglund, and our #1 and #2 to Pittsburgh after the season if they get the first overall pick and we would select Ovechkin. It could happen, but I doubt it.

For now, I would do Foster, Gionta, Bicek, Stevenson, and future considerations (Tommy Albelin or Sean Brown) for Fata, Koltsov, Kraft and the Pens #2 in 2004.

I can't think of anything Pittsburgh would be willing to part with that Lou would ask for. A Gomez centered package for a 1st would be out of the question and a Gomez centered package for a good scoring winger wouldn't work because the Pens don't have any.

Not good trading partners right now.

PEli, I'd like to find a way to bring Morozov to NJ. He and Larionov and Brylin could be an awesome offensive line. Just don't know who the Pens would want and who Lou would be willing to give up.

If we trade Elias, we better get the #1 pick in 2004 and it better be the first pick overall. Elias=Ovechkin. That will lower our payroll!!! We need Patrick for the rest of this season, at least, so any deal for Alex Ovechkin would have to happen at the 2004 Draft, or thereabouts.

Our roster for 2004-05 or 2005-06

Friesen--Gomez--Suglobov
Brylin--Parise--Ovechkin
Pandolfo/Pihlman--Madden--Langenbrunner
Berglund/Pihlman--Rupp/Foster/Rasmussen--Gionta/Marshall/Laine

Rafalski--Stevens? (DeMarchi or Kadeykin???)
Niedermayer--White
Martin--Hale

I think the teams on the bottom are delighted by the idea of a chance to grab Ovechekin for themselves. Elias would not equal a number 1 pick and if he is traded that leaves an offense thats already struggling to score goals. It would be a HORRIBLE move.

Morozov would be a decent addition but we'd end up moving one or more of our better young guys. Bicek and our career AHLers wouldn't cut it. Morozov isn't a premiere talent but getting him would probably result in losing a Pihlman or a Suglobov. When trading within the division, it makes things that much harder.

I understand that this is HockeysFuture but why do the Devils take a huge step back for a prospect? It'd be cool to have a blue chipper but I'm sure management and the fans would rather win another cup. Ovechkin is just another unproven talent. A prospect is a prospect and I don't really see any point in trading our best offensive weapon for a guy that hasn't even played a shift in the NHL.

I understand the hard on for Ovechkin. He's one of the best prospects we've seen in a while. I can guarantee you that the Pens would not trade that pick for anything other than a championship. Elias makes 25% of Pittsburgh's payroll and the Pens are still trying to cut salary.

The Pens will not be trading their #1 if they win the lottery this year. They have no reason to. No matter what they do, they're going to miss the playoffs this year and next year. Why trade a top talent when you know what you get back will change nothing?
