Therien a Phantom

The Flyers sent down Chris Therien to the Philadelphia Phantoms today. Most paid player down there? :lol:

Might be to get him a few games, while we're home in Philly. He looked slow as hell and very rusty (and rightly so) against the Kings

my guess is that he'll be back with the team when we go on the road again

I agree with you F26, even though I haven't been the biggest Therien supporter, he does deserve a little respect for his time here. it would be alot better if a NHL team would take him on.

This is sad. Future vets looking at Philly may really see this in a negative light - lacks class. For God sakes just trade him already if this is what it has come to.

that's just it, nobody wants him. the Flyers would have to eat his salary in order for a team t take him right now and they can't afford to do that. hopefully, some NHL team will need a defensemen this year and come calling but I wouldn't expect to get much in return.

BTW, this has nothing to do with class, Clarke would be more than willing to give him to another team but there are no takers right now.

You are right there are no takers - Clarke tried on draft day. The best hope is that our defense is intact and someone else has taken on injuries around the deadline then he can be moved. I do not expect anything in return really for a trade this year, just wish he was in a better position given his 10 years of service to this team. Regarding class, I understand it is about game conditioning but that is very demoralizing to be sent to the AHL after simply being benched in the NHL after his years. Options are limited but that is not what I want for him, but it may be in his best interest eventually.

This is not a "classless move by Clarke", as has been suggested in this thread. It is not unusual at all to send a vet who has either not been playing or back from rehabbing an injury, to the minors for a few games to get them alot of playing time to get them back into game shape. Did anyone actually see Therien in the LA game? He is NOT in game shape at all. He'll play a couple/few games for the Phantoms, then be recalled.

And if not, Vandermeer could be sitting because he's played awful the last few games. See today's Inquirer article over at www.philly.com. Yes, I know, Tim Panaccio is almost never right, but I can't disagree with that assesment of Vandy's performance.

Glad to see someone got that reference. Although watching the game on Center Ice last night, lo and behold, Therien DID hit somebody, and hard. I was shocked. Of course, watching him lead a rush up the ice was shocking too. I guess he did get some motivation out of being demoted.

so what move they make now? Therien had a decent game, very brutal give away in the first period, but seemed to settle down later on in the game. Next game vs Florida, do they keep Bundy in the lineup or bring in Vandermeer again? what do you guys think?

I always lean towards playing the younger guys. Bundy has been here for 10 season. We all know what he is capable of. It is not as if all of a sudden Therien going to live up to the expections people had for him in 95.

I say go back to Vandy. Get this guy seasoned and give him a better chance to be fully in-the-flow towards the end of the season. Therien's giveaway was just so brutal... to me it's like, play the young guy who is prone to turnovers over the vet who is prone to turnovers.

And sometimes it seems like Therien only hits and gets mad when the coaches/staff give him a reason to. Every season, he'll go through a lull where he doesn't hit a single person. Then the coaches say something to him and the media, and he comes out like he's on steroids and goes wild. It's a shame. He's passive by nature with such a huge body.

Therien will play as he should. No reason to make changes after a 5-0 win.
