I read on TSN that Staal, now that he's played his 10th game, can be demoted to the AHL, but not back to Juniors...

I thought the rule was different, that once you played your 10th game, you were stuck in the NHL, and had to be a certain age to go back to the AHL.

Someone please clarify...

I think TSN has it backwards. He isn't old enough to play in the A.

you're never really 'stuck' in the NHL. The Panthers or Canes can still send back either one of these players to the OHL whenever they please. However by having played 10 games, this counts as year one of their contracts. It's a pretty big commitment by the organization to these players, which means they are likely to stick all year.

TSN may not be incorrect. How many years did Staal play in juniors? If he is an overager, he can be sent to the A.

Horton on the other hand played less than 4 years in juniors so he can only be sent to his junior team.

The only real bad thing about them sending him down is they loose a year on his contract. That would be a big hit.
