Bruinaholic 05-05-2006, 11:44 PM Alot of names obviously come to mind....Dontrelle,Harden,Carlos Zambrano,Felix Hernandez,Bonderman,Sabathia,Papelbon,BEckett,Gavi n FLoyd,Scott Kazmir,Prior,PEavy,Liriano,Duke,Brett Myers,Oliver PErez,Verlander,Zumaya
My homer pick is Papelbon but i still have a strong feeling that Prior is gonna go on a 6+ year tear ala PEdro circa 1997-2003 when he gets it together.
But all in all i would build my team around Jake Peavy
Anthony* 05-05-2006, 11:46 PM felix
joe_shannon_1983* 05-05-2006, 11:58 PM Prior is the best pitcher there, but he can't seem to stay healthy.
Dolemite 05-06-2006, 12:06 AM But all in all i would build my team around Jake Peavy
I second that. He hasn't even peaked yet and he's a monster for the Padres.
Shootmaster_44 05-06-2006, 02:48 AM I would build my team around Chad Cordero. Starting pitching talent comes and goes, but a great closer is few and far between.
anguscertified 05-06-2006, 02:49 AM felix
Dr Love 05-06-2006, 07:40 AM I would build my team around Chad Cordero. Starting pitching talent comes and goes, but a great closer is few and far between.
Oh dear lord. You did not just write this. Let's start from the start--Chad Cordero is not a great closer. He is a very good closer, but he is not a great closer. Wagner, Rivera, Lidge, Gagne... those guys are great. Cordero isn't in their tier.
Second, a great closer IS NOT more valuable than a great starter, so there is no reason to have a great closer over a great starter. Maybe back in the 70s, when guys like Mike Marshall were pitching 100+ innings in relief, you could make a case. But in this age of the 70 IP closer, the closer is the single most overrated "position" in baseball.
Greek_physique 05-06-2006, 09:38 AM I'd go for Francisco Rodríguez
Afino 05-06-2006, 09:55 AM Dontrelle. Nobody has more fun.
Big McLargehuge 05-06-2006, 09:59 AM Having a great closer doesn't mean **** if you can't get to the ninth without the lead.
It'll probably be Felix...but as a Pirate fan I'm very happy with Duke.
Bruinaholic 05-06-2006, 10:06 AM Brandon Webb?
Born in 1979 so hes 26 turning 27 :teach:
Motown Beatdown 05-06-2006, 10:19 AM Cant i keep all three of my Tigers?
If i had to pick one i'm taking Verlander.
Unholy Diver 05-06-2006, 12:18 PM Zambrano, he is a real horse
SwisshockeyAcademy 05-06-2006, 12:28 PM Peavy
BuppY 05-06-2006, 01:21 PM Jake Peavy.
Why is Gavin Floyd on this list?
Feenom 05-06-2006, 02:36 PM Felix Hernandez
Joel Zumaya
Cole Hamels
Rusty Shackleford 05-06-2006, 02:39 PM Kazmir, this kid is a future Cy Young winner.
Again people pick King Felix because everybody knows that young = good. Peavy, who at 24 is too old to be the prospect flavor of the week, is somehow overlooked by many.
Hernandez will be an excellent starter, but when his potential is probably to be as good as Peavy why would you not take the guy whose already there?
Dr.Funk 05-06-2006, 05:11 PM Jake Peavy or Dontrelle Willis
FearTheFlyers 05-06-2006, 06:35 PM How old is Ben Sheets?
KesselBuiltMyHotrod 05-06-2006, 06:39 PM How old is Ben Sheets?
27.

Sure hes not known like pretty much everyother name i mentioned but he is highly regarded and has tons of upside...maybe hes not deserving but i dont think this is really worth a post unless of course u are trying to pad ur post count
Ironchef Chris Wok* 05-08-2006, 08:15 AM Peavy or Zambrano, but Zambrano's manager can't count, he seems to think 120 and 100 are the same thing, so Peavy.
Mr Brownstone 05-08-2006, 08:36 AM Jake Peavy or Scott Kazmir.
Tuggy 05-08-2006, 08:37 AM Jake Peavy or Scott Kazmir.
Yup. I'd be happy with either.

And cream myself with both.
Tuggy 05-08-2006, 09:20 AM And cream myself with both.
I'd like to add Harden in there because I think he has the best stuff of them all (He's still 25), but unfortunately I don't think he'll stay healthy enough

I've always heard a lot about Harden as he came up the system. Hopefully he does stay healthy and he is downright nasty. From what I've seen of Peavy though, I think he has better stuff than Harden.
Bruinaholic 05-08-2006, 12:45 PM Peavy or Zambrano, but Zambrano's manager can't count, he seems to think 120 and 100 are the same thing, so Peavy.
I use to think Baker was a awesome manager but he IMO is a big reason why Wood and Prior are often on the shelf....and unless Zambrano gets dealt(not likely) or Baker gets the Boot, Zambrano is gonna need BLue Cross and Blue Shield.
weaponomega 05-08-2006, 05:55 PM Kazmir or Prior (If he can stay healthy)
because felix could get 'there' sooner and better
Over the past 2 seasons Peavy has won 28 games with a 2.58 ERA. How much farther does he have to go to get 'there?'
If he gets any closer he will be winning Cy Young's!
Dr.Funk 05-10-2006, 12:14 AM How old is Dan Haren? I think he has a real bright future.

Turns 26 in the fall so i guess if i would count Beckett, Haren counts
Im surprised Liriano hasnt gotten any love...i remember watching Baseball 2nite and they were talking about the 20 K games in the past which lead to them talking about who they think will be the next player to get it and Liriano was mentioned by i think Brantley.

Liriano is the next Johan Santana, but I hate the way the Twins waste his talent by having him pitch middle relief.

Isn't that how they broke Johan in?

Yeah.
Dr.Funk 05-15-2006, 06:25 PM Francisco Liriano will move into the rotation and start Friday against the Brewers.
Get ready to the start of something special.
Enoch 05-15-2006, 08:32 PM Peavy easily for me....Harden would be my second choice and would be no. 1 if healthy. Kazmir looks like a stud (especially against the Sox and Yanks), but he still has command issues.
Biggsy 05-15-2006, 08:41 PM Peavy is good Or Felix Hernandez
SpeakerForTheDead 05-15-2006, 08:51 PM Peavy

Dr.Funk 05-17-2006, 12:14 AM According to Marty York, the Jays are in trade talks with the Marlins for Dontrelle Willis. I stress again that it is Marty York so take it with a grain of salt.

More like a truck of salt, in the Canadian winter no less. ;)

High flyin' Habs* 05-18-2006, 06:24 AM Homer pick: Ervin Santana
visor wearing goon 05-18-2006, 08:36 AM D-Train for me. Take him off that crappy team and he'd be alright this year.
gretzky1545 05-18-2006, 10:43 AM someone mentioned gavin floyd as being undeserving of this list, yet oliver perez's name goes unmentioned.
but to the question, its peavy by a distance. He cares a great deal about being smart and efficient in his pitching, despite having some of the flithiest stuff out there which many pitchers would happily rely on and not try to improve the way Peavy does. His competitive nature and success at such a young age combined with the acknowledgement of pitching as a cereberal affair make peavy a landslide for me, but there is a great deal of amazing young pitching talent in the league right now, and it certainly should be exciting to see who becomes the guy out of this generation of pitchers.
