I don't know, but your best bet is to go to www.eurosport.com and watch their gamecast type thing of the games...it's actually very good.

OK so I thought this may warrant a new thread as I'm assuming there will be a lot of people in my position who are stuck at work during the world cup with no TV. Can anyone recommend any good radio feeds that will be available via the net? I plan on using soccernet's gamecast as well, as this is usually pretty good.

Any other suggestion? I'd like to be able to listen to commentary (English please) if possible. In a cruel twist I actually subscribe to XM radio, who will be unlikely to broadcast their games over the net due to copyright rules and such.

Oh you don't know the half of it. We have a websense filter as well, and for some bizarre reason it doesn't pick up HFBoards. I have no clue what I would do otherwise

Sorry to start a new thread, but didn't know where to put this.

I'll be in Germany next week (pretty pumped) and have tickets to the Czech Republic vs. Ghana game in Cologne.

Anyone have any tips on the following topics?
-Staying alive
-Avoiding racism (I'm brown-skinned)
-What attending a World Cup game is like
-Cologne/Germany

I'll also be in Berlin for a quarterfinals game (not attending).... The city should be insane.

Anyone else seeing any games?

AWESOME STUFF!!
Please take a lot of pictures and share it with us :handclap:

I went to a World Cup Game in 1994 at Soldiers Field in Chicago. Watched Greece lose to Bulgaria. The atmosphere was electric. Be sure to drink/eat a lot. I guarantee you wont be sitting down that much.

As for racism, I doubt you'll see any of that. World Cup, or should I say Soccer in general brings out the best in people. You'll make friends with the people sitting beside you.

Most of all, enjoy the game.
Live for the moment.

You'll have a blast!

I guess you've never heard about the rioting, hooliganism, violence and racism going on in the soccer world...

You'll make friends with the people sitting beside you.I doubt Samuel Eto'o would agree with you. That being said, Germany will probably want to dress in its nicest shirt for the WC, so I doubt you'll have a problem.

You said "soccer in general brings out the best in people" which is obviously not true.

Not many went to Japan/Korea last time...

But in France there were huge fights and if you remember one French policeman was killed before the Yugoslavia-Germany game.

As for the question, there won't be any racism problems as there will be many fans from all over the world of all colours. And the security will be unimaginable. I think that until 9th of july Germany will be one BIG party place! Enjoy!

Given the match you will be attending you shouldn't need to worry at all about your safety or about racism. Just go out there and have a good time and you'll see that all will be well. Europe is not a warzone during the world cup, don't believe all that talk. It would be different if you'd be going to see England Germany or Holland Germany or something like that but for this match there should be no problem at all.

As for attending a world cup game, it basically like any other big football game. If you're lucky it will be quite a spectacle, if it's a poor match it will still be a great experience because of the atmosphere.

IIRC he was beaten into a coma...

Inside the stadium it should be fine. Just make sure you stay in the nicer neighborhoods outside though. I've read some placed in Berlin can be quite nasty. Didn't notice it when I was there when I was 16 though.

There were TWO fights in the month of WC if memory serves right.
Germany skinheads raided in Lens and beat a policeman to death, and some english drunk fought each other in Marseille (no damage).

As El_Loco_Avs said, I don't think that the policeman actually died. He was severely wounded and can't live a normal live, but he didn't die.

I wouldn't expect any kind of racist attack. If someone is really unlucky he might be attacked by someone who is drunk, can't think properly at that point or both, but I don't think racism would be the motivation behind such an attack.

I expect some fights to happen, but that's no unexpected at such a huge tournament. The chances of getting into one should be relatively slim.

It's true, he's been amputed of part of his brain. He spent 44 days in coma and is handicaped at 60%.

However, one must keep in mind it was 8 years ago, and the football world has changed a lot since then.

Uh - i wouldnīt say that so easy.
The polish hooligans do have the inofficial crown of the european hooligans (according to english, french and german hooligans the polish guys are the guys to beat) and the czech arenīt 'much worse', but overall donīt expect any fighting to take place in the stadium or big fights close to the stadium. This time hooligans often meet in places which donīt belong to the real WC area and fight for 'their countries' away from the police. The media is often calling it a WC fight and even if two parties are meeting deep in the woods...

And yep, Daniel Nivel (french policemen) is still alive, but damn handicapted. :(
48 fights were numbered at the WC in France according to hooligan reasearch media (worked on a database for university and had some courses too), but expect the number to become a bit higher with each WC held in Europe, since most of those people see those fights as a 'sport' and it's their honour to defend their country (according to various interviews - atleast that's the consens). You wonīt hear that much about most of the fights in the media - just about the big splash(es).

does SBS radio stream them on the net??

The one thing I am liking about being in the states for this one is that when I do get to watch the games, I won't have to do so at an ungodly hour.

For those interested, I am listening to BBC's LiveFive radio, the link:

It depends on the stream, not the program. Most are Asian by origin but you'll have to check the streams for each match. If English commentary is available it is listed on the stream. Or you can allways try to get radio commentary and pause it until it's in synch with the picture.
