The news didn't come as a surprise to W Antoine Vermette.
After a month into the NHL season, the Senators rookie still hadn't moved out of the Kanata hotel he called home and knew it was just a matter of time before he was demoted to Binghamton of the AHL.
That came yesterday as GM John Muckler decided to trim the roster and send the 21-year-old winger down to Binghamton.
"It's not fun being sent down, but you have to make the best of it," said Vermette. "I knew the situation here and this doesn't surprise me. I have to get ready to play in Binghamton and hope that I can get back here.
"It's going to be different, but I have to go down there and work hard. In my meeting with (coach Jacques Martin), everything that was said was positive. I have to make sure that I work hard to make sure I get the job done."
The move could mean the Senators will step up their efforts to trade W Petr Schastlivy. He hasn't performed up to expectations, and if Muckler wants to move Schastlivy, the forward has to get some playing time.
As for Vermette, it's almost a certainty that he will play for Ottawa again this season. He has a two-way contract which pays him $750,000 (all terms US) this year and about $65,000 in the minors.
Now I do realize the source of this report but I have always been impressed with Petr Schastlivy and I think could be a good addition in exchange for a: Whatever pretend scoring winger Keenan has lined up beside Jokinen.
Thoughts?
