Report: Ludzik joins Panthers as assistant

SUNRISE, Fla. (CP) -- Steve Ludzik has joined the Florida Panthers as an assistant coach under Rick Dudley, who took over the team Sunday after the firing of Mike Keenan, according to The Score sports television network.

Dudley, the team's GM, will take over as coach on an interim basis, and said he has already contacted candidates for the permanent job.

Ludzik was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1999-2000 part of 2000-01 when Dudley was GM in Tampa. Ludzik coached the OHL's Mississauga Ice Dogs last season.

Florida's next game is at home Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

Yup, Pelino is gone.

Ludzik replaces assistant coach Mike Pelino, who had been hired by Keenan. Pelino had joined the Panthers from Hockey Canada, where he won an Olympic gold medal as part of the Salt Lake City coaching staff for Team Canada.
