A decent article, after tons of garbage

"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said Tuesday in Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."

There have been more believable confessions. Culture is a birthright in Italy. Maybe he just needs a better interpreter.
But it really doesn't matter if he went "your momma" on Zidane, commented on his growing bald spot or claimed his sister had a wild 1999 weekend with Osama bin Laden, you don't suddenly go bighorn sheep and get tossed out in the waning moments of the biggest soccer game in four years.

This was the final game of Zidane's career, and there is no retribution waiting him. What he should have done immediately after Sunday's game was apologize to Materazzi, his teammates, France and all of soccer.
Instead, he has yet to speak a word. It's coming, they keep saying.

Finally someone says something that makes sense...link (http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_4039471)

Well, it really depends on what exactly he said.
According to FIFA rules, every racist remark before, during or after a game results in a three point penalty for the team, or, if there aren't any points to be lost, a loss in the game that was played. In this case, Italy would lose its title.

It won't happen, nor is it clear what exactly Materazzi said, so it is a mood point do discuss it, but nobody should claim that it doesn't matter what he said.

Zidane may want to apologize to his teammates, because he may have cost them the World Cup, but he has absolutely no reason to apologize to Materazzi, at least not before Materazzi has apologized himself.
I see no reason for him to apologize to soccer, either, as there have been incidents which have been far worse, some of them even done by Materazzi (his famous "I try to get my leg through the leg of someone else for no apparent reason", for example).

I really wish some people could just drop their biases for a second here (I notice your location reads Hamburg, Germany). It's ridiculous that all people can talk about is a "supposed racial comment" when an actual/visible/proven act of violence happened.

To anyone saying that Zidane is a "hero" for "defending himself" against whatever the comment was (racist or not) , it's a shame. That kind view has been the root of countless wars and battles between countries (revenge...). It is also a bad example to set for the impressionable. Imagine what the world would be like if every time someone got insulted (even in the most racist way) they took matters into their own hands by acting violently instead of finding a diplomatic solution.

Let's say Materazzi did call him the "son-of-a-terrorist-*****-whose-father-was-actually-a-penguin-with-webbed-toes-and-whose-grandmother-called-me-last-night-to-get-some-winkwink". Instead of using his head... well wait let me pick my words better here because he actually did use his head.. What Zidane should have done to get his "revenge" is everything he could to win the game. Not errupt into a childish tantrum. Which also suggests to me that not only was whatever Materazzi said a factor, but so were fatigue and frustration of only being able to get past the blue wall of shirts once in the last 50 minutes (during which France poured on the pressure to no avail) to only get robbed a goal by Gigi Buffon.

I've played soccer all my life and know how bad the talk can get out on the field. Usually what I do is smirk it off and use it as motivation to do something for my team. I'm sure many others do the same and we're not even close to top tier professional soccer players. What Zidane did was extremely selfish and even if he shouldn't apologize to Materazzi (which he should if his insult wasn't as bad as everyone seems to think it is), he should apologize to both French fans, his teamates and soccer fans in general. His selfish example is completely against everything soccer stands for.

You are biased yourself as your titel read FORZA ITALY. So please don't even mention it again. BTW the poster is from Hamburg and not from France.

You might have forgotten that Italy beat Germany in the semi-final. And just because I'm an Italian fan doesn't mean my post is biased. I'm sure a lot of non-Italians/non-French supporters will agree with what I said as well.

I never once condoned racism in my post. I'm against it too. My point was Zidane should not have reacted as he did no matter what was said to him, and it just makes me annoyed that not many people will acknowledge this.

The other point is that light must be made of what was said, because it's ALSO a guilt to insult anyone.

my take is zedane was in his last game ever and just let him have it - after the years of abuse it didn't matter to him he had a few minutes left to do it and he did -

IMO, ZZ thought about.... nothing. Strictly nothing.
It was just an impulse without a thought about the (enormous) consequences.

Awful "decision".

And for those that don't understand France's position, just remember he won us the 98 final by himself (and the great D).
If this was ZZ's first WC final or if it was Henry for instance, he'd be a Judas in France.
But ZZ won us a WC in 98, and people tend to understand what he went through.

I must stress though that the ethics of the game seem long gone.
People are knocking ZZ for his idiotic reaction, but please keep in mind that a goon just got the better of a genius.
It's pretty much like Worrell making enough to get Sakic or Forsberg ejected in a Stanley Cup Game 7 OT.
The genius is to blame for his stupid reaction, but the ethical side of the game says the goon that got under his skin is bad for the game.

Until we know exactly what Materazzi said, Zidane is main guy to blame in this incident. A guilt to insult anyone? That doesn't make sense dude. Do you mean Materazzi is guilty due the insult? Again depends on what he said. Everyone everyday says some form of insult.

You might not - and I never said you did personally - but the majority of reports and opinions I've read on the internet, heard on the radio and watched on TV have demonized Materazzi and (some) have even gone as far as glorifying Zidane.

that used to happen to forsberg on a daily basis, at least when he played with the avs. and you better believe he served his fair share of PIMs because he had quite a temper

one of the experts on tsn said that if an insult(about his mother) is hurled at an Algerian male it always results in violence, which is a possible for the sudden and malicious way zidane reacted... so everyone put your "good guy/bad guy" theory aside and try not to make a remark that shows how ignorant you are:teach:

Agreed fully.

I'm ashamed of Materazzi, for what it's worth.

Kind of Off-topic: I'll miss Zidane on the international stage; he's an incredible talent that did much for his country, and was always a joy to watch.

Depends on what exactly your definition of "race" is...

However, it is INCREDIBLY bigoted, if that is your question...
