weve landed on the moon!
we have a separate forum so that things like this CAN be posted as their own thread. It certainly makes things a lot easier to read.
It's headscratching, admittedly, but I do think Kearns is somewhat overrated, and it DOES address a need, even if it's overpaying. I hope the Reds get the wild card, which they should.

I think the Reds got hosed, too, but at the same time, they were in desparate need of bullpen help. Guardado could potentially help the back end, if he can regain his all-star game, but even if he does, there's still a lot of work needed. You need a strong bullpen to contend, and you need a good bullpen to challenge for a playoff spot. Whether or not they have a strong bullpen, and how far a revamped bullpen takes them, will determine how we evaluate this trade in two or three years. `
Cincy still has a potent offence, even without Kearns and Lopez. They dealt from a position of strength in that regard. With guys like Freel, Phillips, Dunn and healthy Griffey Jr. and Encarnacion.

I don't know if the Reds got hosed necessarily. They overpaid for bullpen help they really, really needed. They didn't like Kearns anymore, and that opens up a spot for Ryan Freel to play everyday, so that's not a total loss. Lopez, on the other hand, was really good, though he's been hurt this season.
Their GM was on during the game tonight and admitted that they had possibly the worst bullpen in MLB before this trade. I'd probably agree, but trading two everyday players for a couple of bullpen guys and a journeyman SS probably isn't the best idea ever unless you're getting a star closer back IMHO. The Reds bullpen isn't that much better after the trade. Todd Coffee is still our closer.

Todd Coffee is still our closer.
Except Guardado has got the last 2 save ops.
