Should Wings have kept Larionov?

I say yes. Hudler (iggy's replacement) is either too young for the NHL and/or Lewis has no faith in him and won't use him. Lewis should at least give the guy a few minutes of PP time a guy to help boost his confidence.

Larionov can still provide the role he has been doing for a few years now in Detroit. Play 10-15 minutes a game and help out the power play.

The more I think about, I feel the same way as you guys. This team has plenty of leadership with or without him but it's how smart he is with making decisions with the puck, that's what they miss. They need some toughness along the boards and they need guys who won't cough up the puck. I don't remember Larionov ever making a stupid pass that led to an odd man rush the other way. If the Wings can cut down on turnovers in their own end and prevent other teams from being able to transition quickly after winning loose pucks along the boards, they'd be fine. They can still score goals and produce on the power play, no question. This team does need to start scoring ugly goals while 5-on-5...they can't score four highlight reel goals a night to win games, it takes some lucky bounces and driving to the net get a cheap goal here or there.

I still say no. The Wings still need to evaluate their young players. If they feel Williams can cut in they need to find another option for the future. All keeping Igor would have done would have been to delay the Wings decision on Williams for one more year.

There comes a time to re-tool, sure it might hurt a little bit in the short term. But the Wings need to worry about the long term too. I dont know if keeping Igor would have helped that much anyways. God couldn't turn Devereaux and Holmstrom into scorers.

Why not. They should have put Hudler together with Kronwall in the Griffins until they are out of competition for a playoff spot or in rebuild mode.

Actually, I've seen Larionov do soft passes that are easily picked off. Having said that, since Hudler isn't ready yet Larionov would have been good as the 3rd/4th line center.

Hudler isn't Larionov's replacement, Whitney is.

I always believed that we should have kept Igor, but not just for what he does on the ice...there are certain qualities in a player that don't show up in the stat sheet every night, and Igor was one of those players. He was a stabilizing influence on a lot of the younger guys, especially Pavel, and his presence is missed tremendously.

Yes, we should have kept him...I miss him.

I'm with JW on this one. It was time for Larionov to go and to see what Williams can do. If you just leave a young player like him on the sidelines and never throw a load on their shoulders, you end up with situations like the Wings were in with Goober/Kuz/Wallin. Players end up taking roster spots because you don't know what to do with them.

Yes. He would make our PP even stronger and he would be able to help out our 4th line scoring troubles.

He is, at 42, still better than Hudler or Williams, and THAT is the bottom line! He is the best short passer in the NHL, and has yet to make a mistake with the puck that leads to a chance for the other team.

I would trade nearly anyone to get him back, if only to help be a "bench coach". If he chips in 8 goals and 30 assists, he's done better than his replacements!

No, Whitney is Robitaille's replacement. LW for LW. Too bad we couldnt have gotten a replacement for Luc last year :) I think right now whoever is picking up 3rd line center is iggy's replacement...who is that Jason Williams now?

No, that's Kris Draper. Williams would be taking Kris Draper's former spot as the fourth line center, and has looked all right tonight with Thomas and Bootland. When everyone is healthy, though, I think it could be argued that Zetterberg is taking Larionov's spot at center:

Yzerman
Datsyuk
Zetterberg
Draper

You know...I'd love to say yes...
But I can't.

The wings have to eventually give the reins over to the younger players on the team so that they can prove themselves.

definitely, he might have kept them focused during those awful last weeks.
