ISLES' WIEMER A GONER - TODAY

Islanders Are Trying to Trade Wiemer
The improvement of younger, lower-salaried players like Trent Hunter and Sean Bergenheim have made Wiemer and his reported $1.6-million-a-year contract expendable. But the announcement comes at a delicate time for the Islanders (7-4-2-0), who have shown early-season promise.
"It's always a distraction," Coach Steve Stirling said before boarding the team bus. "Everyone will process it differently."

Isles cutting the payroll fat
Earning $1.62 million this season, Wiemer likely would've fallen back into a fourth-line role with Jason Blake expected to return from a knee injury as early as tonight.
Milbury granted Wiemer's agent, Don Meehan, permission to contact interested teams, and the veteran forward could land in Dallas.

Isles' patience pays off
Defensive-minded New York off to flying start
Hitchcock said the Islanders defend their net with bodies and make getting to the in-tight scoring areas difficult.
"They protect the middle of the ice right from the offensive zone back, so you're going to get nothing in the middle of the rink," Hitchcock said. "You're going to have to claw and scratch for space in front of their goalie and that's a hard way to have to play."

Lapointe also skated and may play tonight vs the Isles...
NOTES: Jeff Hackett will be in net tonight when the Flyers host the Isles at The Center ... The Flyers practiced with everybody yesterday, including Radovan Somik, who is likely less than a week away from returning from his torn meniscus. Both Simon Gagne (hamstring) and Eric Desjardins (back) will probably be able to play tonight ..

Forwards such as Mark Parrish and injured Dave Scatchard also are candidates to be sacrificed in the coming months, especially if youngsters like Hunter and Sean Bergenheim continue to earn extended minutes.

Who could possibly be convinced ownership is committed to winning? How many paying customers are going to show up at the Coliseum after this?

Interesting Botte had no problem adding Scatchard's name.
Considering how little Botte has spent covering the team and did not even cover the opener he is not shy about piling on when it comes to gossip to make up for the day to day work. Maybe if his paper covered games more fans would want to buy tickets?
Aucoin winning defensive player of the week is a non-story? So is the 7-4-2 record?
I also find it interesting the media has decided to write Hunter made Wiemer expendable when one is a left winger and the other a right winger.
Only thing that I do not like is how it was presented or handled and apparently it slipped out. Let him practice with the team and if he is claimed or traded it happens. This parade of gossip and sending him home does nothing because he may just not get claimed and no one may want him in a trade.
DiPietro 11-11-2003, 03:31 AM This is really bad, I mean I do not mind loosing Weimer, but not in this fashion. This whole thing might have very bad effect on the team, because you don't do it the way Milbury did it. Couldn't he just trade him, what the hell he is a Psychiatrist to talk to every player before he gets traded, you got to be kidding me. Its just bad, Im happy for youngsters, but hate the situation that this puts us in.

Your right. This is where I have a problem with Milbury. It's a question of professionalism and handling the job properly and carrying on with some class and dignity for the situtation.
Players better than Wiemer are put on waivers or traded all the time for the same reasons.
Pierre Turgeon was not treated like this by Dallas and sent home, they wanted him out and could not find a taker, so they kept him and did not bury him to a point where it's a distraction.
Milbury makes it feel as if it's not big deal being a New York Islander, you come, you go, next....
This is where Bill Torrey is so badly missed.
It's not a trade, it's a circus. With the usual background of the past fueled by the Isles lazy media that now has their wallpaper for every story around this team for the rest of the season.
And the fans absolutely buy into what they read and stay home because of it.
It's also why I want a new gm, regardless of results.
