and *** was malkin doing giving his passport up in the 1st place?

A bit funny, first Crosby practices with the Kings and now Malkin. Granted, Crosby wasn't drafted by the Penguins yet at that time. Maybe a sign of things to come though :)

At this point I can't see ANY hindrance to him being in the starting lineup on opening night. Well, unless he gets injured. Oh dear.

Sean could teach Malkin how to cover his head and fall down when the Russian Government comes after him.

Being a good Russian citizen.

I hope he can put this behind him and play some good hockey this year.

Simple. The team collected passports of all players to get them stamped "in bulk" at passport control. Or some bs like that.

Ziggy Stardust

Sounds like his team unwillingly held Malkin hostage and him and his agents created a bit of a ploy to delay his arrival to the US, in order to assure his Russian club into thinking that Malkin had committed to them.

Now there be some clever agents!

This is irrelevent. There isn't a judge in the country that will rule Malkin's contract to Magnitogorsk as valid, knowing Velichkin was holding Malkin's passport. It's called duress...and the USA is not Russia (ie, Velichkin can't hire goons to break the judge's legs).

God damn, Velichkin is a sleazeball. I don't see why the NHL negotiates with the RSL. This is a league where managers maniacally hang onto players, gun down underperforming coaches, and pay all the players under the table perpetrating I don't know how much tax fraud. The RSL resembles a Verdun cockfight moreso than an actual, respectable hockey league. "Sports terrorism"

Really? Then I guess only 179 players in the NHL are worth anything, because that is how many players in the league had more than 40 points.

Federal Sports Agency chief Vyacheslav Fetisov, a former NHL great, made it clear he thought the team should pay. What does he think the hockey player is worth? "For a guy like Malkin," Fetisov said at a meeting Thursday with reporters, "$20 million is appropriate."

What is Fetisov smoking? They keep somehow thinking Malkin = Shevchenko. But it's simply not the case. NHL doesn't have the money that international soccer has, and Malkin ain't Sheva.
