Ive never been but id assume going over the Golden Gate Bridge and checking out Alcatraz are must dos:dunno:
Since the Sox-A's dont play on the 27th check out Pac Bell and gimme a review...Park looks insane and gettin to see Balco Bonds is his potentail swan song is worth the price of admission IMO
Blades of Glory 08-21-2006, 05:07 PM Any place in Oakland is good for suicide. Do yourself a favor, eat in a place like San Jose.
The A's constantly field contending teams, but their park is a piece of ****. I might even be too nice. Parking sucks, but that's in the 4 games they sell out per year, and this game will be one of them (or at least close to a sellout).

I'm staying with my friend who lives in Saratoga? He's Asian of course. We're driving to the games.

If you get a chance also drive to the Muir Woods and check it out, you won't be sorry Chris.

If you aren't an A's fan then bring a sweater and go to Pac Bell Park instead.

I went to a game at Pac Bell, great time and a great ballpark.
Brad Tolliver 08-21-2006, 08:55 PM I went to a game at Pac Bell, great time and a great ballpark.Especially when the A's come back in the top of the 9th to beat the Balco Bombers.

Rather ironic that someone who follows a team who's last WS came by virtue of Mr. Canseco and Mr. McGwire calls the Giants "Balco Bombers."
lux_interior 08-21-2006, 11:14 PM Well you'll pretty much be able to sit anywhere you want at McAfee.;)

HAHAHAHAHA oooooooooh yeah HAHA hahaha.....ha.........heh - yeah
:shakehead
:freddie:
The A's are doing the best they can with #s while sharing an ugly f'd up stadium with Al Davis & the Raiders in an 'unstable' city while playing second fiddle in the media to the Bay's beloved Balco Bond & pals...I couldn't even catch the A's on the tube while they were on the road in Kansas City this past weekend - but ooooooooh, I had my fill of the orange&black...plus, being on the west coast, sans an emphatic superstar or stats, only exacerbates the problem
The dedicated crowd that does continue to fill McAfee has drawn praise for its fanfare - the drums & flags, peeps donning the green&gold in outrageous ways - - - of course, there's been a few dark smudges on that rep....but, what team doesn't have its ugly moments in the stands....most recently, in SF - it was the litter issue on the field & then there's the SF fan who was stabbed & killed in the parking lot in 2004 (http://www.sfist.com/archives/2004/09/20/giants_fan_killed.php)
9 World Series titles, 4 in Oakland...overall, only second to the mighty Yanks
1989 sweep of the Giants - I don't blame the SF fans for being bitter & quick to chip about the 'Bash Bros.' when an A's fan shouts "Balco!" - but Oakland's team has since evolved into the near antithesis of the steroid scandal, while Bonds & the Giants have become ground zero for the MLB's war on drugs post-'Juiced' --- A's earned No.9 at the Giants expense, during what could now be considered a long-standing hazy period of enhanced performaces & skewed stats - league wide - the 'Bash Bros.' were just the 'Humpty-Barry & Dumpty-Bonds' of the day - revered without question or controversy - & that's where the jealousy spawns, eh?
In the end, the A's had earned their 4th trophy in the East Bay, the SF Giants trophy case remains empty, but yet the court cases keep coming as they flounder in the NL West - while the Oakland A's author yet another winning record in wild fashion, now hoping to head into the postseason w/ Moneyball LUCK on their side - awaiting a new home (somewhere close), which will ultimately turn the tide back in their Bay Area favor........as history (Candlestick-ick, A's-yay) will soon repeat itself
****
sorry to turn a tangent in your thread Ironchef - I suggest dining in SJ/southbay, SF or Walnut Creek (where most A's venture postgame)...Telegraph in Berkeley is a great destination during the day - the Santa Cruz beach/boardwalk - SF Fisherman's Wharf - Napa Valley Wine Country (though a bit far north for a quick trip) - basically, here's a site to visit: SF Bay Area tourist guide (http://www.world66.com/northamerica/unitedstates/california/sanfranciscobayarea)
(I'm sure no one will read this - too many words haha...scan & skip)
Blades of Glory 08-22-2006, 12:31 AM The A's will never draw fans in Oakland. Not in present-day Oakland, where you either carry a loaded weapon to defend yourself or get held up.
I actually would like the A's to move to San Jose, there's a chance I'd even buy season tickets. SF is too far away, and I've grown bitter against managment and ownership, who refuse to put the team over the top. Plus, Oakland is not a viable baseball market without a new stadium, which they likely won't get. Even with a new stadium, I doubt they draw consistent fans after the first year. Fans want to see superstars, which the A's don't have.
Of course, it's not like Billy Beane knows anything about putting teams over the top (he's never won a playoff series), but he's the best GM in baseball for what he does on such a low budget. I've always followed the A's, even been an open fan when they're not playing the Giants, I'd like to see them win the WS sometime. I'd like to see a Bay Area team win the damn WS. ****, I'd like to see a championship of any sorts brought to the Bay Area.
Thresher 08-22-2006, 12:57 AM The A's will never draw fans in Oakland. Not in present-day Oakland, where you either carry a loaded weapon to defend yourself or get held up....
I was watching *the List* with Summer Sanders today about the all-time greatest dynasties in sports - & the 'Swinging A's' of the early 70's were near the top - and it was said that during that segment, when the A's were rockin' in spite of Charlie O'Finley, Oakland was a beautiful city - content & stable...with hope for the future......
Currently, the city council says it needs to focus $ on education & safety rather than 'save the A's' by building a new park - but with a new park to house a winning franchise - the franchise will be able to contribute to the community in a big way, as a catalyst for improved business/economy, education donations, foundations, programs, etc...
I don't care to see the A's in SJ because I see it as 'Sharks territory' - plus, the SF Giants holds rights to the South Bay
Also, I find it funny when its mentioned time & again that the A's have no superstars...they do have star-caliber players (though considered un*emphatic, not worthy of espn)...they're lost in a small market ignored by the mass media....there's plenty of talent on this team - Chavez, 5 gold gloves set for a sixth - the 'Big Hurt' having a mega-comeback year at a discount...Nick 'Moneyball' Swisher with his wacky antics, big mouth & clutch moments...& Barry Zito the 'Curveball King' --- but its all clouded by 'Mount Davis'
If Oakland lets the A's slip away - they'll be left with the raucous Raiders & the futile Warriors...."genious" :shakehead

An Asian tourist like me should have no problems though. I will be going to Berkeley, I have some friends up there.
dabid 08-22-2006, 03:57 PM That proposed A's ballpark was pretty sweet.. it had the hotels out in right field.

Was it shot down altogether?

You will be fine in Berkeley. I don't recommend heading up to Richmond though. That's not a good place, IMO.
Brad Tolliver 08-22-2006, 05:51 PM That proposed new park would have been the kiss of death for the A's. They have no chance in hell of staying competitive in that new small hitters park.
The big reason that A's have been able to remain competitive in a small market is because Beane can keep replacing pitchers because they play in a pitchers park.
TheDanceOfMaternity 08-24-2006, 11:20 PM Well, Saratoga is a beautiful small town in the hills "behind' San Jose, if you will. So that's probably about a good hour to San Francisco and 30 minutes more than that to Oakland (and don't go the bay bridge way).
I've been to several dozen games at both the A's and Giants stadiums (and I'm a mariners fan, so this won't be biased despite living in awesome SF) I can tell you this:
For Oakland, I actually like the fans much better, despite a concrete jungle with dingy lights. Nothing to do there besides go to that ball park. Way better team with good young, underrated talent. And gets extra points from me because Doug Wilson is a big fan of Billy Beane's style of GM work!
San Francisco's ballpark may be the nicest stadium in the country. Top 3 for sure. (but then again most SF residents believe they are in the best city in the world, but hey, San Jose is uhhh safe!) Games are commonly sold out, and the giants have a lot history, so despite that the park is only about 8 years old, there is still an old-fashioned atmosphere that is pretty cool. Fans are pretty energetic at the game, but the giants most likely have the stupidest fans otherwise. I'm sick of all this media BS. Bonds has gotten not only the league, but the US government to go easy on him for mondo steroid usage. And no one really cares about or notices the other 24 players who are portrayed as minor leaguers at best, even though bonds has not played much in 2 years.
