Who will be the Jays other 2 rotation starters next year assuming 3 of them are Halladay, Burnett and Chacin(I guess Chacin is the only question but hugely unlikely still he wont be). I wont specify #4 and #5 guys since it is possable a guy they get from a trade or free agent is better then Chacin atleast.

Make 2 choices.

Marcum and free agent.

It will be Marcum and another 4/5 starter from free agency, with Jansen and Towers as possible injury replacements (if Towers pitches well this month with the team).

I bet Zito goes to SAn Diego...
Pads have 30+mil coming off the books and with that pitcher friendly park are gonna invest more money into pitching then offense and with Zito being a San Diego native i think will end up there for 6yrs 14.5$per
Peavy-Zito-Young-Wells(if they can talk him outta retirement to stay w/ his home team)

McGowan and VIA trade #3.

:biglaugh: Don't hold your breath. Zito is gonna get huge money from a major market World Series contender, the Jays just can't compete for that.

I'd expect them to sign a midlevel starter like Jeff Suppan, Ramon Ortiz or Vincente Padilla and then round out their rotation with Marcum (or maybe a Corey Lidle/Jason Marquis type signing.)

McGowan and VIA trade #3.

As much as you may think I am the anti-McGowan you do realize you are one of a very small minority who pick him to be a "starter", not just with the team, but a "starter" for the team next year dont you?

Also what do you mean by VIA trade #3, do you mean the Jays are making 2 other trades before that for other positions, or the first 2 attempted trades for starting pitchers will be bust, and they will need to make a 3rd to find the right guy? :sarcasm:

I ment they would get a 3rd starter through a trade. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Hardly anyone is coming close to A-Rod type cash, teams are especially not going to give a guy that plays every 5th day A-Rod cash. As long as you're a pitcher that can give 200+ IP, you're considered gold to teams out there, so it's not a surprise that guys like AJ or even Millwood is getting these bloated contracts. And Zito being a lefty is another bonus. I'd say probably a bit more than Burnett, $12-13M per, max I can see Zito make is $15M per. No team is crazy enough to give $25M per season to any pitcher that's not named Roger Clemens (I believe he makes $22M this [half] season).

Anyways, back to topic. Even with our new payroll injection, I highly doubt we can garner a top-tier guy like Zito. Probably going for the second-tier guys like Armas Jr or something to be the #4 guy. 5th spot is probably up for grabs between the rest of the guys mentioned in the poll.

Zito to the Jays? Right. He's going to command at least 80 million, as Roy Oswalt's contract set the table. He might take a hometown discount to go to San Diego. But other than that you're probably looking at Kevin Brown money.

Is Zito really as good as Oswalt right now though? Yeah I know he has a Cy young, but he hasnt had a very good year, and over the last 2-3 years Oswalt has been the better pitcher of the two IMHO.

When I say not a very good year I mean for the standards of a guy who is supposed to be an elite pitcher of course.

It doesn't matter who is actually better. They're comparable pitchers and Scott Boras is Zito's agent.

Right I forgot about Boras. God I feel sorry for any GM who faces that guy. :pullhair:
