Just aquired Holmqvist in my fantasy league. Although he has been domoted to the ECHL I still feel, long term, he will be a solid top 4 dman. Just wondering if any here has seen him play and can give their opinions on him.
By the way the trade looked like this;
Eric Chouinard, Carlo Coliaicovo for Justin Mapletoft, Andreas Holmqvist
Kind of a risky trade but I like Mapletoft more than Chouinard and figure Holmqvist over the long run will be similar to Coliaicovo's stature.

Well, I'm also a fan of Holmqvist although it seems he is struggling quite a bit right now.
He played one season in the SEL before moved over and he was an average defenseman then. Therefore I think that he left Sweden way to early. He should have played here this season as well and established himself as a star/key - player.
He has a huge upside and is very gifted offensively. Him becoming a top 4 dman sounds realistic to me although I bet it could still take 2-4 years, I guess.

Kronwall, Jonsson, Holmqvist, Enström & Fransson. I think we have a decent core of talented D men on the way. Fransson & Kronwall are my two favourites, both of them are excellent skaters. Kronwall could probably already be a regular in the NHL on a lesser team than Detroit.

Definitely. I think that Kronwall would actually be a quite valuable defenseman for most NHL teams out there.
I'm pretty high on his brother, Staffan, as well. He is definitely not as flashy and not as gifted offensively... but he has size, a great reach and is strong. He plays solid D and I can see him being Toronto's #5 defenseman in a few years.
Also, if we take a look at the Swedish 86's, there are like 6-8 defenseman of large stature that all could become quality players in the future. I myself have seen quite a bit of Carl Gunnarsson and Emil Axelsson lately and these guys could become something special.
Also, Frölunda's Richard Demén-Willaume and MoDo's Oscar Hedman are rizing stars.

Yeah Staffan ain't bad, not bad at all actually. Starting to like Fernholm too, DIF has a couple of decent blueliners, I only hope that we can keep some of them. Holmqvist is a former DIF player too I think, at least his brother was.. Got a clue on the mother club for them pred?

well, they are both born in Stockholm.
Michael played his junior hockey in Djurgården while Andreas Holmqvist in Hammarby. That's what I know basically :)

Andreas began to play hockey with Rågsveds IF, I assume Michael did the same?
