Safronov on the move again

Ex-Coyote prospect Kirill Safronov was traded by the Thrashers to the Nashville Predators. Remember how bad he was in his first NHL game? Let's hope the newest change of scenary can do the former first rounder some good.

Anyone else remember that draft day? It was a good day (at the time). Bobby unloaded Oleg, who was the whipping boy that year and drafted Scott Kelman and Kirill Safronov.

The trade breaks out like this:
The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired defenseman Tomas Kloucek and forward Ben Simon from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Simon Gamache and defenseman Kirill Safronov.

safe to say that draft was an absolute disaster for our scouting staff and one of the biggest reasons why Draper was brought on board to straighten things out.

I believe this makes it official: the Coyotes won the Safronov+Zainullin for Hordichuk trade. A minor victory, to be sure, but considering that many regarded this trade as a huge loss at the time, it's noteworthy.

I was one of the ones thinking it was a huge loss, but I don't remember being one of many :D

You can't say that necessarily yet either though...

Here is how it breaks down

Safronov-->Kloucek
Zainullin-->Savard

for

Hordichuk & 2nd rounder-->Ference

I like having Ference although he isn't fitting with the team, but you can't say that ATL mismanaged the deal overall. We have lost this deal by far in the big picture.

Dan:

I don't think you were alone, but perhaps as a frequent poster you seem like a crowd by yourself. ;)

GoCoyotes:

Well, if you examine the trade in isolation, it seems clear that Hordichuk is a more useful player than Zainullin and Safronov, neither of whom are likely to be NHLers. The fact that Atlanta managed to get Savard for Zainullin was remarkable at the time, and grows more astonishing with each passing day. But neither that nor our decision to use Hordichuk to get Ference (which I liked at the time, and seemed to be a key move after Simpson was dealt) really matters. Atlanta did a remarkable job of bouncing back from a poor trade, and the wisdeom of our own subsequent decision making remains to be seen...

IMO the Coyotes show a disturbing penchant to throw in extra value to get a player they want.

The Safronov and Zainullin for Hordichuk trade was a prime example. While I liked the idea of getting Hordichuk - no way should he have required 2 prospects (including our number 1 dman prospect at the time).

Hindsight suggests management assessed their own talent properly and unloaded them.

Another example is the Briere for Gratton trade. Obviously very different players and fill very different roles but I still cannot understand how we traded for the older, more expensive, less talented player AND gave up the beter draft pick???

Ditto for the Handzus and Esche trade. Regardless of how Boucher turns out long term Zus was a lot to pay for him let alone throwing in a quality backup as well.

I'd love to disagree with any of the things you just said, but I can't...

:)

Poor asset management... I think we've had this conversation before...

Have been hearing that Philli is shoppong Zeus around. That would mean that they are not overly happy with him and are shopping him around while he still is showing good numbers.
