SensGod 12-05-2003, 06:25 AM Did anyone else notice that he REALLY didn't want his 1st NHL goal to be an empty netter? he tried to pawn the puck off on Vanner, and when he had no choice...he potted it. Aftwerwards...he was NOT very excited at all. He didn't even want to knock gloves with the guys on the bench.
The look on his face said it all. Anyone else notice this?
Dr.Sens(e) 12-05-2003, 06:32 AM I did notice that as well. The funny part was when he was sheepishly touching gloves with the guys on the bench, Varada stuck his glove right in Vermette's face and gave him a face wash with a devilish grin.
It was kind of like, "Nice first goal punk", but only with a broken Czech accent...

Much like Pavel Brendl who score a beauty 1st NHL goal...
............
Of course, players prefer score a 1st NHL goal a la Jason Ward than euh... Antoine Vermette...
Getting an empty net goal with the lead like that is really a thrill...like kissing your sister *sarcasm*
:p
Theo Huxtable 12-05-2003, 07:02 AM At least he picked the corner, a la Ron Hextall.
Other Dave 12-05-2003, 07:17 AM Lucky for him then that Andreychuk tossed that puck into the stands. ;)

SENSfreak_03 12-05-2003, 07:21 AM he coulda had his first goal earlier on that 2 on1 (short handed i believe), and he tried to pass it to vanner again, when he had a perfect shooting position. oh well

After Andreychuk tried to jettison it, I believe it hit the protective netting, fell back on the ice and Van Allen fetched it.
The cursed little thing just would not go away.

Well...here's to hoping that it won't curse Vermette. I really love this kid, and he's the future #1 LW for the team, and I hope that he stops his snake bitten streak soon.

I've already made my assessment of the guy in another post, and I also hope he sticks with the team. Not because I think he's first-liner material, but because he's hilariously funny to watch.

Coaches Corner Saturday: Cherry rips Vermette (also from the "Q") for "hot dogging" by picking a corner on the empty netter.
Cherry,
"Well, good old boys from Kingston like Dougie wouldn't have fired the puck into the empty net like that with their team already up by two goals eh. They have more respect for the game than that."
"I'm telling you, if this Vermette kid doesn't cut out show boating with this rifling the puck into an empty net, someone's going to give him the mustard. He wouldn't get away with this in the WHL that's for sure!"
"Scoring your first NHL goal on an empty net, disgraceful!"

Crazy little puppy dog.
I wonder what Cherry would say about that '3 on none' breakaway last night. Good thing the Sens won and can laugh about that breakdown now. And Prusek used his head to stop that one LOL. It's only just the Sens though for HNIC purposes, if it was the Leafs I think it might get a mention...
I also think Van Allen retrieved the puck for Vermette although Vermette didn't seem that interested for now, he might later in 20 years....
Lexicon Devil 12-05-2003, 09:14 AM Speaking of the 3-0, what the hell was Tampa doing? Passing to the middle guy? If only they had shot, or passed to the far player, it would have been an easy goal.

I said the same thing. It's probably so rare that an opportunity like that happens, that the players didn't know what to do.
Arn't 3-0's one of the All star game skills competitions? Watch those guys go at it sometimes, and it looks like what Tampa Bay did. When done correctly, a 3-0 should be an AUTOMATIC goal, but, TB fell into the trap. They skated slowly and they didn't spread out. In essence, a breakaway would have done them better than the shot from the slot they ended up getting.

I believe that Cherry would brag about how he wouldn't get away with that in the AHL, because as we all know that's the leauge best known for its toughness and honourable players. As we all know Cherry played there and that's why this is true. Everyone else is a soft daphodil.
