Anybody got any ideas what type of compensation we should be getting from Oates signing with the Oilers? Could we possibly get a second rounder for him?

He was a UFA you get nothing.

No, there's a system of compensation for teams who don't sign their UFAs. I don't know how it works, though.

It goes by how many "points" a player has. If a player sign for big money, the pts go up. It also has to do with the amount of career pts and accomplishment.

its virtually completely dependent on the new salary of the player. since his was about 2 mil a year, id guess a mid/late 3rd rounder

Your wrong!

The league compensates teams who lose high priced free agents. Detroit will get a 2nd or 3rd rounder from the league for losing Federov for 10 million. Oates signing may bring a late round pick from the league. They decide all that much closer to the draft.

However my understanding is that team's that spend sign more UFA's than lose UFA's don't get the compensation. Since Fedorov, and Prospal were signed, Anaheim doesn't get any compensation. I could easily be wrong though.

Yep, the system works mainly on salary, although there are a few more things to it. Anaheim signed Fedorov and Prospal for big bucks, while Oates didn't sign for much.

So Anaheim shouldn't get compensation for Oates (it probably would have been a 3rd or 4th rounder). But the Oilers' signing Oates shouldn't affect the compensation that they get for Leetch, because as Jerky brought up, it goes by this point system, where it's almost certain that Leetch > Oates.

That's my understanding of it, anyway.

So would the Red Wings signings of Thomas, Whitney and most of all Hatcher impact their potential compensation?

My mind hurts.

That's okay. My sphincter's sore after the last two games.
