hey all
I'm a hockey fan all round - prefer the Oilers, but Lidstrom is my fav player, so...
Anyways, I had a question about Shanahan. He was drafted by the Devils, then signed as a free agent by st. louis in 91.

he played a few productive seasons for the Devils, why did they let him go? Did it have something to do with the CBA at the time? Just some lore on a great player, s'all.

He was a restricted free agent. The Blues signed him and then were forced to give up Scott Stevens as compensation.

I thought the Devils signed Stevens but were guilty of tampering so they had to give St. Louis some first round picks as compensation.

They had to give those 1st rounders up recently. Like a year or two ago I think.

The whole story about how Shanahan went from NJ to STL is there.
Shanahan was traded after the '95 season to Hartford for Chris Pronger. Someone here will remember how he got to Detroit if you want to know.

I could be wrong, but I think the Blues signed Scott Stevens and as a result had to give up 5 first rounders ... a year or two later, they signed Shanny and had to give up Stevens as a result........
This is all from memory! I think around the same era, the team was for sale and they literally passed on all 10 rounds in the amateur draft except for the 1st rounder whoever they took Stevens from all their picks that year went unpicked......
