I didn't mention it as I expected it when Zherdev left. Not a really big deal as the IIHF agreement will expire while the players are in service and the CBA could keep anyone from playing during their term anyway. Zherdev is worth it, if you ask me.

But these two could potentially be taken out of hockey for a period of time and miss a year of development. I guess I just thought it was a bigger story than it was.

If they play well, I would be surprised if they make that move -- it would hurt their team. Of course, I know they've done it in the past.

An excellent point, but they would be cutting off their nose to spite their face. They talk about losing Russian talent, then they won't let their own guys play!

They are still playing for CSKA Moscow, so I dont think that is going to happen.

Svitov and Chistov were taken out of hockey, weren't they?
My guess is that the players were officially inducted into the Army, took the oath, signed the paperwork, and then went back to CSKA to resume their careers.
This way, if they decide to come to the U.S. without CSKA getting the under-the-table payoffs they want, the Russians will have legal grounds for restraining them.
I wonder if they "enlisted" for one or two year terms?
I think all this means is that we may or may not see the players in question at training camp, but they definitely won't be playing in North America before at least January, 2005.
Anybody with more insight into how Russian hockey works is invited to correct me or clarify if I am wrong.

No offical word, but the paper said it could be Moyzakin.
