The Punisher

Leave your brain at the door.

A super-hero with no super powers movie. A modern day cowboy flick. A 21st century, combination Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider. Charles Bronson on steroids in Death Wish. Comes complete with a poor man's Batmobile.

Just like in Kung ** movies or revenge westerns, the hero has the perfect family that gets wiped out by the bad guys. The hero miraculously survives and goes after the evil doers. The bad guys are too arrogant to be scared. To the cheers of the audience, the good guy picks apart the nasties and sends them packing...permananently.

Another Marvel Comics movie set to cash in. The ending also promises the endless sequels.

You must not think to enjoy this flick. If you just accept mindless action flicks for what they are, this is actually an entertaining movie.

8/10 if you leave critical appraisal behind (i.e. forget you're a grown-up)

oh yeah we could use the banana here

ps edit: pretty bad when the filter won't let you spell KungFou correctly (see above) LOL

I saw this movie two times. The first time was in a theatre and the second on a plane.

It is interesting to point out that I loved the film the first time, but the experience was not the same on the small screen, although I still enjoyed it.

Now, I don't normally like to refer to Ebert and Roeper, because one is a burn-out and the other is a simpleton, but they made a similar point that the film doesn't have the same impact when rented - I assume you rented it.

Ultimately, you have to identify with the experience and some people don't, many those who never got out of the country or even the city they live in.

My latest viewing:

Throne of Blood - ****/**** - Kurosawa sets Macbeth in feudal Japan. Very cool flick. May IFC never go off the air.

If you consider that a good film (special effects aside, Cameron is one of the few directors that use them very well), I want to see your list of the worst films. I would give Titanic a 5/10, good special effects, but the fake plot line (and the whole love story) ruined it for me.

The Whole Ten Yards

Storyline or plotline gets a mere 2/10 but the plot is just a setting for the funny antics of Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry who get an 8/10. Several one-liners and slapstick gags are well done and actually made me laugh out loud so they get a 9/10 (pretty hard to get a 10/10 in my books). Kevin Pollak as the ridiculous East-European mobster and he and his dysfunctional family are too stupid to be convincing but somehow they make the movie surprisingly entertaining...

Shades of Darth Vader, there is also an unpredicatble twist at the end.

Storyline is stupid but the gags are very funny, it will make you laugh....

7.5/10 overall

The Girl Next Door

7/10

The story? Predictable with a few surprises. The boobies? There were some. The jokes? Quite funny, and with two quick-witted characters. The schmaltz? Yeah, it was there but not so much as to turn guys off of it.

Cinematic Brilliance? No, but it was actually one of the more entertaining movies I've seen in a while. I paid $8.00 and I'd say it was worthy of the financial investment, much more so than some of the crap I've been subjected to in recent years. In fact, this is one of the few movies that I have seen where there was actually sexual/romantic tension between the lead characters, something that I certainly did not see in Jersey Girl, The Butterfly Effect, Lord of the Rings (Frodo and Samwise showed more tension than Arwen and Strider/Aragorn) and various others.

However, I FULLY recommend this as a date movie for all males with girlfriends. She gets the hokey romantic storyline, you get the porn star cameos. Mostly though, you get to experience the presence that is Elisha Cuthbert.

If Elisha Cuthbert had a theme song, it would be "Angel Eyes" by Jeff Healey. I could try and express it into words, but that would take up a couple of hours of my time. At the risk of sounding like a fanatical nut due to brevity, she just "is". Perhaps you will understand my analogy, perhaps you won't, but here it is anyway:

Have you ever woken up after a horrifying nightmare sweating and wanting to scream but finding that trusted blanket and curling up saying to yourself, "Wow, I guess everything is absolutely fine now"? Elisha Cuthbert's smile is that blanket.

If you get it, good. If you don't, see the movie for yourself and discover that sensation.

Starred Kirk Douglas, Harvey Keitel, Farrah Fawcett, and a murderous robot named Hector. Consisted of a wafer-thin plot and a bunch of running through the same corridors. Man On Fire.. Was actually very decent and stylish (some interesting mixing/editing techniques).. One of the better kidnap-and-rescue plots I've ever seen. Has some cruel scenes, though =). But Man Of Fire was watchable, to say the least..

Agreed but not a chick flick for Sheryl and Friends.

The fast and furious MTV editing was giving me a headache but it did convey the sense of stroboscopic dysfunction that flowed with the movie.

Ex-soldier, troubled by his role as counter-insurgency agent, finds redemption while getting the baddies.

I did find disturbing the recurring theme from the kidnappers, corrupt cops and officials that they were just doing their job, they are professionals, they are business men etc... Actually, they were just mainly as*h*les. But their self image was perturbing if depicted realisticaly by the screenwriters...

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness - (1958)

A ton of inaccuracies, but that's to be expected of films from back then, like white actors playing Asian parts, Ingrid Bergman, who was about 5'10", blond, blue-eyed and Swedish, playing the role of Gladys Aylward, a real missionary who worked in China, who was barely 5 feet tall, dark-haired and English. As usual, Ingrid Bergman gave a great performance, but overall, the movie was too goody goody and sappy for my liking. 7/10

Saw two movies this weekend....

SecondHand Lions - 7.5/10. Kind of sappy and cheesy but I enjoyed it. When I get to be 70 or so I want to be a cranky old man who sits on his porch and pulls a shotgun on any salesmen who come to the door. There's nothing here that is especially thought provoking but its a wonderful little story. I found the flashbacks to be overly campy and I didnt really think they fit with the rest of the movie but I thought the rest of the film made up for it.

Big Fish - 6.5/10. Maybe I was fooled by the previews into expecting something else but I was disappointed. Still a decent movie that I would recommend but all the parts that would have made you go "WOW that's cool" are given away in the previews (ie the huge fish, his giant friend, the confetti hanging in mid-air) so the surprise is missing. Great looking movie as all Tim Burton films are, but I found the story to be rather flat. A decent rental but don't expect anything too interesting.

Definitely not the same as the first, though not much better in my opinion. Maybe I'm just not reading through the subtext but you have a collection of people you all hate and are just hoping they get it over with. This gives more of the background, so for those who watched Vol 1 like myself who spent the movie searching for a story like an obsessive 5 year old with a Where's Waldo book, here it is. And it's still not that great. I'll also agree with Troy that the ending could have been about half the time. 4/10

The Concorde: Airport '79 (1979) the last and the worst of the Airport series. (3/10)

Funnier at times than Airplane!, like in one scene when George Kennedy's character (Patroni) opens the window in the cockpit (at Mach 2) to shoot down a guided missle with a flare gun. Most of the movie was absurd in one way or another, the plot, animation, the sad fact that there were some good actors in this mess, and they took it so seriously.

Such memorable quotes too:
Isabelle: You pilots are such... men.
Capt. Joe Patroni: Well, they don't call it a "cockpit" for nothing.

Another glaring issue with this series:

In the original Airport film, Joe Patroni (George Kennedy) was a mere Boeing 707 mechanic who in the words of the film was 'only licensed to taxi'. In Airport '75 he had moved upstairs to a desk job (fair enough). In Airport '77 he had a similar role, but all of a sudden by the fourth instalment of the Airport series he was a fully fledged Concorde pilot with decades of flying experience.

Earthquake (1974) - After saving a bunch of people in Airport 1975, Charlton Heston and George Kennedy try and do the same to L.A. Also featured Ava Gardner and Lorne Greene in need of a paycheck, Victoria Principal in black leather, so maybe not all was lost. 4/10

Saratoga Trunk (1943/46) Starring Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper, filmed after they both did For Whom the Bells Tolls together, but shelved until 1946. I thought I would like this film, Ingrid gets to don a brunette wig, but I just couldn't get past the one actress in blackface who played he housekeeper and the midget that followed them around. The Simpsons Complete Season 3

It's the season where the show really began to take off, up to about season 8. After that, the show has gone downhill, IMO. Some classic episodes, but the writer/director/cast commentary was pretty interesting, gave a little glimpse into how the show is made. Interesting to hear how the voice actors sound when speaking normally (Marge and Lisa's voice actors talk like Marge and Lisa though, it's kind of funny). 9/10

Big Fish: Solid B

I liked how all the characters were real, despite how weird it was.

EuroTrip: Solid B

I was expecting a very stupid movie that I would just have a typical "what the ****?" reaction. However, it was hilarious. I almost cried laughing. The humour was very crude, and the story is that of a chickflick (a guy travelling all over Europe to find the girl he loves). I may be overrating it, but my expectations were so low that I was blown away when I saw it. The audience was much smaller than Scary Movie's opening night (sold out), but it was so much louder.

Secret Window: B-

It was a good movie. I didn't like the fact that he killed his own dog. But it shows how much he loved his wife; it made him completely insane to lose her. I would have rather him been caught and put in prison, or something. I didn't like the ending. Which is what the whole movie was about.

Monsieur Ibrahim

Omar Sharif plays a turkish vendor in Paris who befriends a young jewish boy. Very thoughtful, quiet, easy-going road movie with the Islamic elder played by Sharif playing the role of mentor to a young jewish Parisian with family problems. The boy's father dies and the boy picks Ibrahim to be his adoptive father. Ibrahim plays the role of soft-spoken teacher to the angry and confused adolescent 'Momo' (abbreviated term of endearment from the name Moses). Eventually Ibrahim buys a car and learns to drive (in that order), and the two set off to Istanbul.

The movie is too short and leaves you wanting more of life's wisdom's as told by Ibrahim. The movie is also a healthy change from all the Islamophobic tendencies or muslim bashing we see too much of recently in the West; the religion is pictured in a better light.

The anti-Van Helsing movie: no fast action clips with computer graphic enhancements, no monsters, no guns, no chase scenes but there are a few prostitutes on this particular Parisian avenue....

7.5/10

Shrek 2:

***1/2

It was full of some hillarious moments, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas perform some absolutly golden moments as Donkey and Puss in Boots.

the main story was pretty good as well, truely a Family movie where kids will fall over with laughter and parents will knee slap.

it can be a little slow and unfunny at some parts and there were a few Fart/Burp jokes which only really make the Kids laugh and cause the older audiences to shake their heads in shame. oh and the Puss in boots hair ball, it wasn't great.

the Movie was good and deffintly worth the price of admission.

I'd have to say the Funniest absolute best knee slapping moment came from Puss during the COPS Parody, I won't say anymore about it though.

Previews:

Spider Man 2- holy **** this movie is gonna kick ass, a little to much plot revealed in the trailer though.

*forget the name* - Tom Hanks plays a foreign man stuck living in an Airport(it's fuzzy) it looked ok but not something I'll probably see.

The Increidbles - This movie looks like it's gonna be a riot.

shockingly that's all the previews as we had like 10 commercials.

anyone notice that Commercials are 10 times cheesier at the movies then on TV?

Funny in parts. The last 15 minutes was the best of the whole movie. It has the same lull in the middle when you watch sad Shrek wander around lamenting his lost Fiona. From Dusk Till Dawn 2.5/10

Alright, I'm one of the biggest Tarantino fans out there, but WTF happened in this movie? The only reason I gave it 2.5 is because its good up until they get to the bar. Then it seems like it turns into a whole different movie. It's like he was thinking "Hmmmmmm.....running out of ideas.......lets just throw a bunch of vampires into it and let the battle to the end of the movie...". It doesn't help it has Robert Rodriguez as a director.....possibly my least favorite. This movie was watchable for the following reasons:
George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino were a good team.
Harvey Keitel is awesome.
and the number reason, and possibly only reason to watch this movie:
Salma Hayek dances half naked with a snake. I'm telling you, Tarantino just wrote this movie so he could have that one scene where he gets a little foot action from Hayek. He knew what he was doing.

That was going to be his big budget comming out party where he'd move on to be a big action/comedy star. Then, when Congo tanked, no one would hire him for a major part. ********. It's not Campbell's fault the movie sucked. I mean, you could see the zippers on the monkey suits. How crappy is that?

Seen recently:
BUBBA HO-TEP - 7/10....there was great characterizations in this one. Bruce Campbell's decrepit old Elvis is genius but the mummy storyline was kind of dumb.

TIMELINE - 5/10.....an average tv movie at it's very best.

BLUE CAR - 7.5/10.....squirmy and unsettling at times but a very nicely made 'coming of age' movie.

NAKED FOR SATAN - 4/10....a 70's Italian sexploitation horror flick...okay but too many holes and some of the most wooden acting I've seen in a while. I guess I'm just so used to the SFX gore of today's age.

KILL BILL vol.1 - 8.5/10.....the beginning is gratuitiously gruesome, but that's Tarantino. The Uma Thurman wheelchair escape scene is one of the funniest couple of minutes I've seen in a while.

ROB ROY - 8/10....thoroughly enjoyable epic. IMO Liam Neeson is underrated as an actor and should be revered more than he is.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (Criterion Collection) - INC....I wasn't in the right frame of mind for this, I have to watch it again.

SEVEM SAMURAI (Criterion Collection) - 10/10....one of my favorite movies of all time.

SUZHOU RIVER - 8.5/10....Chinese drama set along the Shangai riverfront. Very stylishly done. Thoroughly enjoyed this one....

MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS - 8/10...Schrader feature on the contoversial Japanese writer/Nationalist. Done very well.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN - 9/10....Spielberg adaption of JG Ballard's autobiographical novel. A great flick.

COMPLETE MONTEREY POP (Criterion Collection) 10/10....A great documentary on the first big pop festival....worth it for the extra Hendrix and Otis redding discs. Other artists deleted performances shown here were obviously left off for good reason....there's some putird pieces here....

M*A*S*H - 10/10....(the original movie, not the tv show, (while good for it is, it paled in comparison to the film), a great anti-war film and extremely funny.

The Station Agent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340377/) - 6/10 -
Some very funny parts, but the pacing was odd. The ending also kinda lacked an ending. It was one of those movies where nothing was really accomplished. It was more a couple of weeks in the life of these people that happen to meet. I mean, that's neat, but it's not worth the high reviews it's getting.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - 6/10 -
Very awesome effects and CGI. Normally, I don't care about that stuff, but they tuck so much into each scene that it's pretty amazing. I haven't seen the other two, but this one was easy to follow with some dark moments. I wonder how the real young ones handle it. Alan Rickman is awesome of course.

Touching the Void (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/) - 7/10 -
Reenactment of two climbers who had a rough climb in Peru in 1985. One guy got a badly broken leg. By the end, you are amazed at what he was able to do. Amazing scenery. The glacier makes a great badguy.

He followed the Bible pretty much word for word. What was racist about it? I guess you're calling the Bible racist. In fact, he even toned down the part where the Jewish leaders say the blood will be on their hands so you couldn't hear it and there were no subtitles.

And to keep it on topic: Passion of the Christ - 2/10 - Terrible movie.

I had the misfortune of watching "Wrong Turn" about five young people who are stalked by inbred cannibals in...yep, you guessed it: West Virginia. The cannibals looked like troll extras from LOTR, and the "hero" was a med student! What a crapper! 1/10.

I'm not sure how anyone can call the Bible's account of Jesus' trial and execution racist. The Jewish religious leaders strung Jesus up on false charges, "traded" his life for that of Barabbas, who was a known murderer, mistreated him in the most inhumane way possible, blackmailed Pontius Pilate, and than had him impaled on a stake. How can you put a positive spin on that?

Kill Bill Vol. 1 10/10

Great movie. So gruesome, but completley fake. There were some completely amazing (and funny) fight scenes.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 10/10

Another great movie. Tarantino does it again. Pie Mei might just be one of my favorite characters of all time.

50 First Dates 6/10

Very funny in some parts, very stupid in other parts. The ending was one of the worst I have ever seen in a film.

The Last Samurai 9/10

The only reason this doesn't get a 10 is because the first half hour is very boring. But once it gets into it, it will be one of the best movies you have seen all year. Tom Cruise and Ken Wantanabe were great.

Jackass. I don't know if it was the actual movie since it was written 'Volume 2' on the DVD box.

Saw "Around the World in 80 Days" Yesterday.

It was good harmless Disney fun. Nothing extradordinary, not great but not bad and there were a few good laughs. I wouldnt pay full price to see it but worth going to see at a matinee or as a rental especially if you have kids. Lots of cameos (too many in fact), Jackie Chan is fun though, and the girl (Cecile De France) is smoking hot. I give it 7/10.

Cube 1 was waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better than cube 2...trust me.

Hypercube was basically a remake of cube one. Cube one had all the basic characters (a psycho killing guy, a handicap person, doctor, etc.) and better traps. Cube 2 was just a four dimensinoal cube, that's basically the only change.
