Hell on Heels 12-09-2007, 03:16 AM My sister scared a bunch of people by being on my laptop, no idea who she talked to, so, here's my night. I'm OK.
I just got home from the Civic about 20 minutes ago. I was at my hockey game, on the bench, and just suddenly dropped. I don't remember much of what happened, but apparently was out cold for 30 seconds.
Had severe concussion symptoms and (change of personality, massive headache, sick, very wobbly and needed 3 people to help me get to the driver).
Passed the concussion tests, the CAT scan, blood tests (2 times, and couldn't find the vein), stress tests, and heart tests, as well as a spinal tap.
Spinal tap is when they stick a needle in your spine to test your spinal fluid. The doctor couldn't find the right spot so he "went in blind".
No more physical activity until they figure what's up. They have no clue so sent me home.
(why is this always me...)
edit: I wasn't even supposed to play tonight, so.
SilverSeven 12-09-2007, 03:21 AM Yikes. Hope it turns out to be nothing.
sensens 12-09-2007, 03:24 AM Really sorry to hear that. I work in health care, so I know some of those procedures can be pretty unpleasant. But they wouldn't do them if they didn't feel it was necessary to make sure they could rule out anything serious. Hopefully that's the case, and everything's okay. If they didn't find anything right away, that's a pretty good sign - but just be sure to take care of yourself for now.

Yeah, I know, I'm pretty good when it comes to that stuff, I'm very used to hospitals now but never had head injury or whatever this is. They have no clue. The doctor thought I had a brain hemorrhage, so I'm pretty lucky I guess. Heart's fine, brain's fine, spine's fine, they don't know what happened.

DFA1979 12-09-2007, 10:28 AM I know your pain. I had a spinal tap in the emergency room a couple years ago for migrane symptoms and it turned out to be viral meningitis.
The worst part is the odd pressure of the needle, and not the pain itself. That and the anticipation. Have they done a culture on your spinal fluid? You very well could have the same thing. Though they kept me in the hospital for 5 days (two in isolation in case it was bacterial). Viral is actually pretty harmless most of the time, but a scare none the less.
Hope your through the worst of it. Get better!

rusty1 12-10-2007, 08:14 AM Scary.
I've had a spinal tap too (not fun). But the concussion I suffered was scariest by far. Mostly because I "woke up" and asked what had happened 9 times. I still only remember the last time. And it took several months before I was back to normal.
Don't push yourself! I hope you feel better soon!!
Herc Man 12-10-2007, 08:47 AM So I was down in the British Virgin Islands on Wednesday, and went to a very, very nice beach. I was body surfing and just got completely hammered into the white powdery sand after catching a good wave. Thought I injured my back pretty good, but after a couple more Carib beers, I was good to go again. Try a couple of beer if nothing else works... ;)
Seriously, hope it is nothing serious, and whatever it is can be helped with something very simple, like beer. :)
You might also try a Caribbean vacation to fix what ailes you. :cheer:

I had a tooth pulled a couple of years ago. They wanted me to take an anesthetic but I refused and went to another dentist.
They froze it solidly and I didnt feel anything.
I think its overkill to take anesthetic to have a tooth pulled.
Why do they have to do all 4 teeth at once?
Anyway, at least on Saturday it will be all over.
Except for the aching mouth of course.

Having a tooth pulled can be very different than having your wisdom teeth out. I had to go to a dental surgeon (as in not a "dentist") to get mine out, which required a fair bit of scalpel work and stitches.
Its the only time ive ever had to be put under completely though I have had a few minor surgeries, just not in an area that required it. It was great though, that night was the 3D episode of Medium (which I never watch), so I told my mom to get the glasses and I watched it stoned outta my mind.

I have had my wisdom teeth out, but not all at once.
Same as having any other tooth pulled for me, just a little harder to get at
for the dentist.
When I cancelled the appointment and refused the anesthetic, it was the "dental sugeon" appointment I cancelled and had my dentist refer me to-cant remember if he was a dental surgeon or a dentist-my
own dentist didnt want to do it becuase the tooth was not in one piece.
Anyway the new guy did it , no problem, and I did not have the danger or expense of going under
anesthetic.
I think the whole thing of knocking the patient out completely is mainly for the convenience of the dentist.
Plus they can also charge another 300 -500 $.
Perhaps I am an anti-dentite?

That means your wisdom teeth were showing. That's a much easier procedure. I believe Silverseven was talking about removal when the teeth are impacted (ie: still completely covered by gum and bone). That's when they put you out.
Funnily enough, I woke up in the middle of my four being extracted. That goodness I couldn't feel anything and eventually went back to sleep. But you should have seen the looks on the faces of the dental surgeon and assistant when they saw that my eyes were open. Gold, Jerry, gold!

The expense wasnt an issue for me, it was all covered. And its not as simple as getting any other tooth pulled. They had to cut into my gums, shatter all 4 of them, and remove the shards. They then had to stitch it all up.
I have had 3 other teeth pulled, and they were all pretty simple. No shattering the tooth, no cutting, no stitches.
You also make a general anesthetic seem far more dangerous than it is. Is it a danger? Of course, but it is very often a necessary one.

There is some danger, but sometimes, as in your case, it is neceaary.
Sometimes,as in my case, it is not.

I had an identicle proceedure when I was 16. My mother, being nice, made me a nice thick strawberry milkshake when I got home. Any idea what strong suction can do to new stitches in your mouth?
Needless to say I ended up with another dental visit the same day... :shakehead

I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed using the SilverSeven method. Ouch.
My wife had hers removed by Dr. Greenacre (offices at Carleton University). He's a little flaky but he had me massage my wife's jaw muscles during and after the procedure. It worked wonders. Apparently the muscles normally complain about being having your jaw stretched open for an extended period of time. He took little micro-breaks during the procedure, and the massaging helped maintain blood flow. So her jaw muscles didn't swell and cut off blood flow to the area of healing. She was eating salt and vinegar chips the next day.
