Rules: To start, this draft will be 5 rounds, you have 24 hours to pick for the 1st round, 12 thereafter, PM the next person once you've drafted, and keep all talk about the draft here. Trading=kosher. Trading with players+picks=kosher. Trading with players+future picks, not kosher. Try and keep it within current scope. Players obviously have to be under contract.

I THINK so. I would assume the Pats pick at 31 and the Giants 32 in every other round except the first (where the Giants pick 31). I'm not too sure, though.

NFL gobbled up the Pats pick, so the G-Men are at 31.

That's not THAT horrible of a trade.

Troy Williamson still has potential, but his confidence is shot.

If the Giants didn't waste a pick last year on Steve Smith I'd probably take that offer if it was a 2nd and a 3rd along with Williamson and throw in a late round pick going back.

Actually, if you have seen Williamson catch, please send us all a clip. Right now it is considered an Urban Legend of sorts.

Yes. Very fast. Nice guy and hard working too.

(please ignore the previous post.... just move along... nothing to see there.... just make the trade for Williamson....)

If you have seen Williamson catch, then you would realize how bad a trade that is.

Actually, if you have seen Williamson catch, please send us all a clip. Right now it is considered an Urban Legend of sorts.

It isn't his confidence that is in question, it is his Venus de Milo catching ability.

I really don't mind him as a 3rd receiver. He's certainly not a go-to-guy, but I think he's a guy who if you have the right coach could really fulfill at least some of his potential.

Williamson has led to some great comedic moments the last couple seasons. My two personal favorites:
1) The 3-pointer against the Redskins 2 years ago. He held his arms out in a "basket" like you teach kids. Johnson launched a bomb (well... as best he could) and it was nothing but net! Yep, strait through the basket he made with his arms.
2) The Spike. Can't remember the game, but it was also with Johnson at QB. Williamson did a quick turn-around route over the middle. Jumped up, got his hands on the ball, and spiked it down to the ground like a volleyball with both hands.

Nice guy and fast, but undeniably the worst hands I have ever seen on a player. Heck, he might need to switch to CB.

Ah yes, I thought they used their own 2nd on Ugoh, but then I remembered the Booger trade. Well, at least that one worked out really well, given Glenn's sudden retirement and Ugoh showing he has pretty good potential.

No kidding. Either that or give them Glen Dorsey, since I think thats who they take anyways. Dont just skip them and leave it blank, it's gonna throw the whole draft out of whack.

Jamie Thomas was last active at 10:04 this morning. As such, I'm pulling rank and selecting for him

Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU

http://newnfldraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/dorsey.jpg

http://newnfldraft.com/2008-nfl-prospects/glenn-dorsey-2008-nfl-draft-updates

Glenn Dorsey the Defensive Tackle out of LSU is considered to be one of the best players in college football. Standing at 6′2″ and about 320 lbs. Dorsey is a beast of a plaer. In 2004 Dorsey made an immediate impact as a freshman playing in all 12 games while starting 3 of them. In 2005 he also played in every game recording 28 tackles 4 of them for a loss and three sacks. Last year, Dorsey started every game and had 64 tackles while have 8.5 of them for a loss and and three sacks. This year alone Dorsey has 30 tackles with 5.5 of them for a loss and 4 sacks. As a defensive tackle the initial responsibility is to stop the run. This guy is not only a run stopper but with his physical ability he is able to get up field and get the ball carrier as well as the QB

Well all apologies to everyone. Got stuck at the University.

Thank you Rick, my first choice of the draft was going to be Glenn Dorsey. I will be back tomorrow with the text.

Sorry everyone

The Miami Dolphins were 1-15 last year. They need help at every position. They got a brand new staff, hiring a respected football man in Jeff Ireland. Now they need new players. The team has holes at QB, WR, OL, TE, DT, DE, LB, CB and S. Finally they have holes anywhere.
In a situation like that, the best strategy for the team is to go for the best player available. The Dolphins believe that the best player available also fits a need.
The Miami Dolphins were the worst team against the run in the NFL last year. They gave up an average of 153.5 yars per game on the ground. You can't win many games when you can't stop the other team.

The team firmly believes that Glen Dorsey will be able to help the team to stop the run and still put pressure on the Qb, an other need on the Dolphins DL.

Dorsey is the better player of the three. Ellis is getting a lot of attention because of his Senior Week Bowl where he was excellent, but Dorsey and Long are still the better players and they will be the first 2 taken in the draft this year.

Ohio State DE/OLB Vernon Gholston

http://photo.the-ozone.net/photos/2007_2008/Football/07-09-22-FB-0045.jpg

This guy is a beast and IMO the next defensive star in the NFL. His main priority would be to go get the QB as are the Shawn Merriman and Demarcus Ware of this world. He has all the moves, the athleticism and the determination to suceed. I considered McFadden but there is no other Gholston in this draft and RB is not a need for the Jets.

Seems no one is interested in moving up.

So, without further adieu, the New England Patriots, three-time Superbowl Champions and the dirtiest players in the game (Woooooooooooooooo!!!!!!), are proud to select, from Penn State

Dan Connor, ILB

http://media.rivals.com/IMAGES/Player/video/DANCONNOR250_7-11.JPG

http://www.nfldraftdog.com/2008_nfl_draft/dan_connor.htm

Winner of the Chuck Bednarik award for the Defensive Player of the Year, Conner is a talented tackling machine with decent size (6’ 3” 230 lbs) who outplayed teammate and 2007 NFL Draftee Paul Posluszny for much of the 2006 season.

The Patriots feel that under the tutelage of Tedy Bruschi and Linebacker Coach Pepper Johnson that Connor will be able to step in next season and spell Bruschi in 3-4 situations, and eventually become a Ted Johnson-esque player.

Yeah, he's a linebacker from Linebacker State, but he's definitely not the best player left. Big time reach and a huge gamble.

With the talk of the town centered around the QB situation, the Baltimore Ravens address their secondary needs by selecting CB/KR Leodis McKelvin out of Troy.

http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2007/09/15/PH2007091500115.jpg

Pick Analysis: With Chris McAlister and Samri Rolle up their in age, fighting injuries and proven scrubs filling out the CB spot on the depth chart, the Ravens select this talented defender from Troy. With great playmaking abiltiy, McKelvin possesses blazing speed, his 40 time had been clocked in 4.38 to 4.45 range; allowing him to run with most of the receivers in the next level. He possesses a natural instinct for the position, because he is quick to read and react. He uses his hands well to disrupt the receiver timing and can accelerate with tremendous burst. He shows great recovery speed with a smooth backpedal and hip turn. As proven by his steller kick returns, Leodis McKelvin is considered by many pundits as a Kevin Hester clone. He is anything but. McKelvin is a true defensive back in every word.

It came down to two players, but the Bengals chose #1 in your programs, and #1 in your hearts.. Kenny Phllips, S, Miami

http://images.athlonsports.com/d/5650-1/KennyPhillips.jpg

Phillips has it all. From a physical standpoint, he has everything you want. He has excellent size and can match up with just about anyone in coverage. He also possesses the athleticism, quickness, and speed to fly around the field making plays. He is aggressive, active, and willing to do whatever it takes to get to the football. Phillips is a complete safety as he can attack the line of scrimmage in run support and make plays on the football in coverage. He has also earned All ACC honors for his success in the classroom, so he is getting it done off the field as well.

To NO: 22nd overall pick (1st round), 60th pick (2nd round), and Bobby Carpenter

Agreed. Contemplated moving up earlier into the top 10, but the cost would have been far too high.

And with the pick, the Dallas Cowboys are extremely excited to select RB Darren McFadden. IMO he is the best player in the draft, and a backfield of him and Barber will be the best in the league. On top of that, all it basically cost was a late 2nd round pick and a guy that never sees the field. That and hypothetically speaking he'd get paid #10 overall money instead of top 5 money. The deal was too hard to pass up.

To bridge the "difference", Carpenter would have to be worth a low 2nd/high 3rd. So that seems plausible. Good deal by Chaos. Guess we'll see who falls to NO at #22.

Wasn't in love with anyone at that point, though if I kept the pick I would have taken Rivers. This draft has a lot of depth at different positions so to grabbing that extra 2nd rounder was my main motivation and Carpenter, while he hasn't shown much in his young career thus far, is a potential improvement over Shanle and Simoneau (two of the starting linebackers last year) and at worst badly needed depth. The Payton/Gibb and Cowboy LB connection (see Fujita and Shanle) might have them genuinely interested in Carpenter as well.

As a Junior, Talib has established himself as one of the best defensive college football players in the country by being a Consensus First-team All-America. Not only has he performed well as a cornerback he has contributed on the offensive side as well. Though playing wide receiver sparingly, Talib has caught four touchdown passes through the first nine games. In a game at Kansas State, he ended a potentially game winning drive by intercepting a pass by Josh Freeman. He has also returned an interception more than 100 yards for a touchdown. In the 2008 Orange Bowl at the end of the season against Virginia Tech, Talib returned an interception for a touchdown and was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

With the 16th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals are pleased to select, from the University of Illinois, running back Rashard Mendenhall.

http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/77212128.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1931429C503D256B63F83EF4348D78F2F44 284831B75F48EF45

With the decline of Edgerrin James and J.J. Arrington not living up to expectations, we felt it was a priority to upgrade at the runningback position. Essentially, it was a choice between Mendenhall and Jonathan Stewart out of Oregon...we fully expected the decision to be made for us, as we didn't think both backs would be available at #16. In the end, we feel both are great backs, but we project Mendenhall as having slightly more upside, and feel he has more potential as an all-purpose, pass-catching back.

Difficult, they could go many ways. There's need at safety, corner, O-line and maybe running back. There's no value at safety unless they reach for Reggie Smith. I wanted Willis last year but the Saints couldn't get it done but Lofton is the next best thing. Yes, he is undersized and not the most athletic guy out there but Lofton is an absolute tackling machine!! The Saints are in desparate need of that after a poor performance by their linebackers (Fujita excluded). You are in pretty bad shape when Simoneau is your starting Mike. Lofton is all over the field causing turnovers and shows excellent range. If he gets a hand on you, he's taking you down...and hard.

He possibly could have fallen to me in the second round but I think he will tear up the combines and shoot way up in the rankings as a top 20 pick. This kid is a pure, no nonsense football player.

CB Antoine Cason

http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/pac10/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/759630.jpeg

Cason may not have the most upside of this deep class of corners but he is the safest and most ready to contribute in another desperate need for the Saints. The best man-to-man corner in the draft, he is a perfect fit for the Saints and their man coverage scheme. People question his speed but the results and gametape speak for themselves. He can be left on an island which is helpful given that Bullocks has trouble backing his corners.

All in all, I'm happy with my first round. Got my two favorite prospects in the draft and improved the Saints LB depth (Lofton and Carpenter).

You don't find a 6'2 cornerback who can run a 40' in 4.3 seconds and who has as good of hands as he did. Absolutely dominant in the Senior Bowl, we fully expect Rodgers-Cromartie to be a force in the NFL and to finally give us a true interception-hungry CB -- something the Giants have been lacking for a long time (to see how many balls they dropped last year was ridiculous).

The physical tools he possesses are extremely rare and it will be a joy to watch him develop in Big Blue.

He's probably the biggest boom/bust guy in the draft. He was a probable top 10 pick before a sub-par senior season, but his speed, return ability, and huge upside are too much to pass up. That and the fact that TO is 34, Terry Glenn will probably never be the same again(and could very well be released), and Crayton is best suited as a #3 guy, we had to draft a young impact WR sooner rather than later.

The San Francisco 49ers, with the 29th pick in the 2008 draft, select:

Doucet follows in the footsteps of 2006 teammates Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis as first round picks. San Francisco has no downfield passing attack, and the drafting of Doucet signals a rebuilding of the 49ers once legendary passing attack. There really are no oustanding receiver prospects in this year's draft, but there is a lot of potential.

With no obvious needs and Harris and Woodson not getting any younger, the Packers need to think about reloading in the secondary and do so with Smith. Let's just hope he's not another Ahmad Carroll ;)

Nice choice with DRC, he was the guy I wanted at 33 even if I knew he would not drop that much.

If someone is interested in pick 33, I am open to trade down a little later in the second to get one more pick in the draft. Let me know if you are interested before I make my pick. If I get no good offers, I will go ahead and select one of the very good players remaining.

Not second guessing Jonothan here, but I was actually hoping Sweed dropped to the Giants in this draft. With him and Plaxico on oppsoite sides, teams would have to pick their poison. I figured the Giants could pick up a DB in the second round cause this draft seems to be deep at the position from what I read.

The Giants are horrible -- HORRIBLE -- at drafting WRs. Even if the guy was a can't miss prospect, the Giants would somehow **** it up.

I'd prefer them to wait till the later rounds if they want to pick another WR up. We still have Moss, Smith, Plax and Toomer. Not to mention David Tyree (though he's awful).

Boss looks like he could add another dimension to our offense. Being able to run a two TE set where both are absolutely dangerous would be fantastic.

Ah jebus, back to me already. Kinda regretting not taking Jackson when I had the chance even if he wouldn't have contributed immediately.

Chargers select DE Derrick Harvey.

Although I have to admit his size would say he's more of a LB in a 3-4 alignment as San Diego currently employs. Not so much a need pick here as I'd prefer to get a veteran safety instead of putting another rookie out there.

OL Branden Albert.

Even if many players were interesting at this spot, the team firmly believes Albert was the best player available. Even if he played guard during most of his career at Virginia, he has great footwork and it is said that he could play tackle and be a very good one at that. The potential is definitly there.

trade to announce

Bucs trade their 2nd and 3rd round pick to the Jets for their 2nd round pick.

Buccaneers select out of North Carolina, DT

Kentwan Balmer

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/47/477532.jpg

I wanted him in the 1st round but since he slipped no way I would pass on him. Flowers would be extremely interesting at that spot also.

Regarded as the premier defensive lineman in his area coming out of high school, Kentwan Balmer finally lived up to his vast potential as a senior with the Tar Heels.

The former defensive end was shifted to defensive tackle as a junior, but it was not until the arrival of coach Butch Davis that Balmer excelled on the football field. Davis took the talented youngster under his wing and Balmer surpassed his cumulative statistical production from his first three seasons during his final year.

Balmer earned All-Area and All-Conference honors as a junior and senior at Weldon High School. The 2003 Area Defensive Player of the Year helped the team produce three shutouts in their first six games that year. He posted 113 tackles, 12 sacks, eight pass breakups and six fumble recoveries his final campaign. As a junior, he registered 103 tackles, 11 sacks and scored a defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery. He was also a member of the North Carolina Shrine Bowl Team.

Balmer enrolled at North Carolina in 2004. The 250-pound right defensive end saw limited action in nine games, coming up with one assisted tackle. As a sophomore, he added more than 30 pounds to his frame and would appear in 11 games. He started the final three contests at right defensive end for an injured Tommy Davis, responding with 17 tackles (eight solo), a sack, five stops for losses and five quarterback pressures. He also deflected one pass.

In 2007, Balmer appeared in 10 games, starting the final eight contests at left defensive tackle. An early season right high ankle sprain forced him to miss the Virginia Tech and Furman clashes and he later re-injured his ankle in the second half vs. Wake Forest. He was in on 16 tackles (14 solo) with 2 1/2 sacks. He added one pressure, as he also blocked two extra point attempts and batted away a pair of passes.

As a senior, Balmer shifted to right defensive tackle. He earned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference accolades and received the team's James Southerland Award (captain), as he ranked second on the team with 59 tackles (33 solo). He collected 3 1/2 sacks, 9 1/2 stops behind the line of scrimmage and four pressures.

In 42 games at North Carolina, Balmer started 23 times. He collected 93 tackles (55 solo) with seven sacks for minus-52 yards, 17 stops for losses of 79 total yards and 10 quarterback pressures. He also deflected three passes and blocked a pair of kicks.

The Baltimore Ravens look to address their evident quarterback needs by selecting QB André Woodson from Kentucky

http://thenastyboys.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/andre_woodson.jpg

Pick Analysis: The Ravens have had their QB woes for....as long as they have existed. While McNair has had his momments, hes a shadow of his former self and may be playing his last season in the NFL. With little depth behind him, enter the Ravens second round choice: André Woodson. The Kentucky product has all the tools that have scouts raving about- prototypical size, solid frame, has a very strong arm, can make all the throws, good touch and great timing. While his mechanics have been questioned, and will be a hurdle that will seperate Woodson from potential starter to depth fodder, there is no doubt about his excellent intangibles in terms of leadership and work ethic; which only helps the tranisition. Woodson is still improving and has undeniable upside.

New Orleans rumblings again. Their active GM makes another trade.

To DET: Josh Bullocks FS and Jason David CB

To NO: 46th overall

Reasoning: Bullocks and David just are not fitting into the Saints defensive scheme. Bullocks, while talented, was a reason for many of the deep balls the Saints allowed the past two years. Kevin Kaesviharn outplayed him last year. Like Bullocks, David is better suited for the Cover 2 defensive scheme employed by the Lions and is desperately needed with Stanley Wilson as the only CB on the roster that played last year after releasing Bryant.

Saints have more than a few players they'd like to take at this point in the draft. Expect more rumbling.

http://old.irishsports.com/subscription/snapcount/images/c_TrevorLaws-big.jpg

This guy's shine was lost in a horrendous Irish season. While maybe not on par with Ellis or Dorsey, Laws is definitely a nice consolation prize for a team in need. Perhaps the best motor among the D linemen, he just boosted his stock at the combines (posted better numbers than Ellis) and was very good at the Senior Bowl. Lack of height is not a concern but rather gives him, along with his strength, a huge leverage advantage . Should be a good 3 tech DT for the Saints.

Clemens is not a good QB.

If I was a Jets fan, I'd be utterly pissed the **** off if they go with Clemens for more than half the year. He's shown absolutely nothing.

The Jets need to draft a QB early. Brohm would be a great choice if he's available in the 1st but I think the 2nd is more likely. They like Joe Flacco quite a bit and I think they grab him there as I doubt he falls out of the 2nd.

Most Jets fans I know in the area are expecting a QB in the first 3 rounds and I have no reason to see why they won't pick one up. They need one.

Clemens has the confidence of Mangini and I don't see any QB that could make an immediate impact with the Jets with that offensive line...
of course if they sign Alan Faneca and Flozell Adams I wouldnt be against a top QB pick but as of right now they need to build a strong offensive line and then think QB (late round) and next year a top QB if Clemens doesnt do better...

Edwards and Thomas teaming up for a 1/2 WR combination for the foreseeable future... doesn't get much better than that for a QB.

There are other positions on the team that need more help than WR (Edwards is a star, but Jerevicious, while still consistent, is getting up there in age), but I deemed no prospects at any of those positions to be worthy of 2nd round status.

Continuing on our quest to improve our LB corps, the New England Patriots are proud to select, from the University of Miami

Tavares Gooden, OLB

http://www.lubbockonline.com/images/20071014/88037_512.jpg

With the recent departure of Rosevelt Colvin and our need to renew our LB corps, the Patriots feel that not only is Gooden the BPA at this point in time but he is the best player for our team.

The Superbowl Champion New York Football Giants are proud to select with the 64th overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, from Newburry College, OT Heath Benedict

http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/images/benedict_action.jpg

It's no secret that the Giants O-line needs help. It's needed help for a long time and it's about time to address that issue. It was either a line-backer or a tackle here and I went the tackle root because I feel that Benedict is the best player available and also has the most upside of any player left on the board. Injured most of last year, Benedict had an absolutely incredible Senior Bowl performance which showed he could play with the big boys and he'll be protecting Manning for years to come.

Quick and painless 2nd round. At this pace, we'll have to take a two week break after the 3rd until the comp picks are sorted.

Trade to announce

To KC: Bobby Carpenter

To NO: 67th overall (3rd round)

Vic Rattlehead*

Yes, it may seems as a steep price for Carpenter, but he needs to be in a 4-3 defense to thrive. He has great upside and should get his career going in Kansas City.

The New Orleans Saints are pleased to select, from Michigan:

OLB Shawn Crable

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j132/satanic_tyranny/Crable.jpg

Another need the Saints have to address is the pass rush. They don't come much better out of the draft than Shawn Crable. Effective at both OLB and DE in obvious passing downs, Crable is a disrupting force that should help improve the lacking Saints' pass rush and make plays in the backfield. While ideally suited in a 3-4, his abilities also work in a 4-3 though his coverage skills are lacking. As long as he is pressuring the QB, however, that shouldn't be a problem.

The New England Patriots are proud to select, from Oregon State

Roy Schuening, OG

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/45/452769.jpg

http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?Prospect_ID=1368 (Roy Schuening)
Schuening is the number one rated guard prospect rated by Scouts, Inc. He has very good footwork for a player his size. Schuening does a good job at taking angles to use leverage to block defenders in the run game. At times he has shown the speed to be an adequate pulling guard in the run game. He does a good job getting to defenders at the second level after an initial block at the point of attack. Schuening engulfs smaller defensive lineman. He does not do a great job with his hands, but can be taught at the next level in order to keep defenders away from his body. Schuening does a great job in the pass game and has good knee bend. He has shown the ability to stop defensive lineman's bull-rush because of his superb technique. Schuening lacks the ideal mean streak that offensive line coaches love. He plays too high at times and will likely struggle against elite two gap defenders. Schuening will likely be the first guard prospect taken in the 2008 draft. He can improve his draft status with a good performance at the Senior Bowl. Schuening will likely be a second or third round selection
