Aurora Springs Stable’s Awesome Chic used a perfect ground-saving trip under Irwin Rosendo, took over at the top of the stretch, and drew away to win the $200,000 Florida Oaks (gr. III) (VIDEO) by 4 1/2 commanding lengths March 15 at Tampa Bay Downs.
The 3-year-old Awesome Again filly scored in her graded stakes debut for trainer Rafael Ramos, doing it at odds of 13-1. She completed the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:44.38.
Elusive Lady was second in a field of eight, four lengths in front of favorite My Baby Baby. Calico Bay was fourth.
Out of the A.P. Indy mare Trading, Awesome Chic entered the Florida Oaks off a third-place finish in the six-furlong OBS Sprint Stakes Feb. 11, when she rallied determinedly to miss by only a length. Prior to that she scored her first stakes win in her 3-year-old debut, taking the Jan. 19 Gasparilla by a half-length at Tampa Bay.
The Florida Oaks was Awesome Chic’s first try around two turns.
