Hi all,
Just a quick question about club options as I see from nhlnumbers.com that Alfie has this in his contract for the next 3 years. Is it as simple as Ottawa picking up the option and his cap hit being 3.8 Mill or is there more to it than that?
Sorry if this has been explained elsewhere, too lazy to search :)
Thanks!

The options are already incorporated into the cap hit.
Options are no longer allowed in the CBA but Alfredssons contracts was before the lockout.
His options are picked up automatically if he hits a certain amount of points (I think 70) but if he does not hit them the Sens can chose to pick the options up.

Wasn't there an article a few weeks back that talked about this? It said something about how alfie was going to meet with murray to discuss the contract. dunno... there was a lot of confusion about the contract after that article

Let's explain how those options are actually structured:
Each option year ('09-10, '10-11, '11-12) is a player/team option. Alfredsson has control first - if he reaches 70 points in a season, he automatically guarantees the following season [so 70 points in '08-09 guarantees the '09-10 option]. If he doesn't reach 70 points, then control goes to the Senators - who can accept or refuse. Either way, if the option is exercised Alfredsson gets $3.8 million in salary and his cap hit remains a hair under $4.339 million. Because Alfredsson's control is bound by on-ice performance, he can't just decline his option years now [that would constitute a renegotiation] ... and the Senators can't decline their options because control doesn't switch to them until Alfredsson doesn't reach 70 points in a year.
