DEL Playoffs

The playoffs are about to start on Wednesday. Should be very exciting, all teams are close together, but Berlin is my favorite.

Here are the four series with my guess and the season-series in brackets:

1.Eisbären Berlin – 8.DEG Metro Stars 4:2 (2:2)
2.Nürnberg Ice Tigers – 7.ERC Ingolstadt 3:4 (2:2)
3.Hamburg Freezers – 6.Adler Mannheim 2:4 (2:2)
4.Kölner Haie – 5.Frankfurt Lions 4:1 (2:2)

Luckily I have an option for playoff tickets, because I have season tickets for the Freezers. The first two home games were sold out in two hours, it wasn't even 9 am.

2.Nürnberg Ice Tigers – 7.ERC Ingolstadt 4-3
3.Hamburg Freezers – 6.Adler Mannheim 2-4
4.Kölner Haie – 5.Frankfurt Lions 4-0

i don't really care who's gonna win it this year, cause my huskies played so horrible that i really need a break. but as long as koeln is kicking some lions butts, it'll be fine with me. :D

I hope Düsseldorf wins it because of Kreutzer, he's great.

I wouldn't mind Köln winning it though, always great to see with a lot of Germans winning!

Düsseldorf will get smoked by berlin. That is a sure bet for me! They were the best team for the last two years and got stunned by a great Krefeld defence in game 3 last year. This game pushed them out of the plan an pressure became too high, they couldn't stand it against a surging Krefeld-team that was out of this world on special teams. If they had not run into a more then red hot Robert Müller in that game they would have got away with the cup last year already! Now they will get it. Cologne will have a hard time beating Frankfurt. I predict a 7 game series. HH will kick the Eagles. They are the better team defensively. I think it will go 4 games. Nürnberg - Ingolstadt is a tough one. Could be 7 games too. Nürnberg is a hell of a skating team with phenomenal tactical abilities but lacks some experience in a lot of the guys. Ingolstadt has to offer lots of offensive output in Mann and a hand full of others and a VERY strong goalie in Waite. Yesterdays game proved how that series will or at least might go. I give a small edge to Nürnberg.

I think Berlin wins the finals in 4 games against either Nürnberg or in the Anschütz-Battle versus HH.

Why not? Come on man, look at their roster...you cannot compare them with the Polarbears or Mannheim. Hans Zach is the only reason the sharks changed their international and offensive style to defensive hockey that is boring to watch. Look at this years Playoffs they weren't able to score against Frankfurt two times in a row and ,!!sorry Lions :D !!!, they are not known for a perfect defensive system this season->stats...

I don't want to blame the Sharks... maybe defense wins championchips... but the Sharks are not successfull that's a matter of fact!

You don´t have an argument about Cologne beeing "Team Germany" except the name "Zach".
Cologne has a lot of germans, but....

start in the net: Müller (Krefeld), Jonas (Berlin), Seliger (Mannheim), etc.
Leonhard Wild is hardly in the Top20 of the german goalies.

Defense: Lüdeman + Renz - that makes two...and not 6-8...maybe some might consider Schauer as a mainstay on the national team, so let´s say 3...4-5 guys are missing..

Offense: Stefan is old. Zach did a good job on Furchner/Lewandowski/Boos, a mixed one (some might call it bad) on Kink, Ullmann, Hospelt and Blank. Are Ustorf, Greilinger, Loth, Felski, Martinec, Sulkovsky, Hackert, Aab, Keller, Reichel, Serikow, Acker, Hart, Kathan, Retzer, T. Abstreiter, Kreutzer, Mondt, Hynes, Dolak, Hommel, P.Abstreiter, Rautert Cologne-Players ??
On the last roster (www.deb-online.de) Lewandowski, Boos, Furchner, Blank, Morczinietz are players from Cologne in the offense. Lüdemann, Schauer and Renz are defenders from Cologne on the national team - so you didn´t prove one point, except that both teams do have the same coach, that doesn´t make Cologne "Team Germany".
Cologne is Cologne and "Team Germany" is "Team Germany".

:teach:

Their system of straight defensive hockey is almost the same. You are right Cologne is Cologne but players like Pasco, Adduono etc. play the same way like Abstreiter, Dolak or Kreutzer for Team Germany, they are all hard worker and never take a shift off coach Zach gives more preferential treatment to hockey b**ches
than players who are amazing to watch( Hock, look at him in Mannheim...)

OK then...See you... :D

Stemming from the former East Germany, the Eisbaren were one of the first German hockey clubs to assume an (animal) nickname, to mark a new beginning and shake off their infamous socialist roots. Unfortunately, "Dynamo", the name of the former sports club of the Eastern German state police still lives on among some ill-disposed fans... 14 years after the German re-union.

Ingolstadt tried their best, but came way short the first two games, Hamburg can't beat them regularly and Frankfurt isn't clearly better than either of them.

Meine Meinung:

Cmon guys, let's "talk" in english. Others might be interested in what we are discussing. It's just more polite and in addition to that we should be happy to have a german message board on here and find people being interested in german hockey. :)

And further on, I would suggest not to discuss the rare appearances of violence in german hockey fan culture. Anybody has his own experiences, we should better not hint at others and give other people the wrong impression.

i see no reason why there could be some cheating, but you never know. but berlin has a hockey boom and with the new arena in the making, they need success to get attention. but it's almost the same in hamburg. they have a real boom and winning the cup would establish the team in the sports scene in hamburg, especially with the two bigger soccer teams having problems.

Well, if the HSV would start winning it's away games they would sit higher in the table.

Poor St.Pauli, I really feel them. I hope that they stay in the Regionaliga (3rd league.)

With Hertha (HOPEFULLY!!!) and Union in the 2.Bundesliga the Eisbären's and ALBA's (BBL- Basketball) popularity might increase even more. I'm keeping my fingers x'ed.

they have 17.000 visitors every home game, but it's not attractive. that's why the freezers can raise their popularity at the moment.

i don't think hertha will relegate, but it's not that important. they play at the bottom of the bundesliga and an ordinary soccer fan has no reason to attend to their games. and union is union. they have their die-hard fans and aren't popular at all. so berlin's soccer teams are at the bottom, no matter where they'll play.
ALBA is playing not as dominant as it was the case the last decade, so their popularity might even decrease.
it's all about the eisbaeren and hockey in berlin. i like the idea of a good, established hockey team in berlin, dynamo or not. it's good for german hockey.

I don't think Hertha BSC relegating (HOPEFULLY NOT!) would change anythink about the Eisbären. Hockey just doesn't get that attention in germany. Doesn't matter if there's a soccer team in the 1st Bundesliga or in the 2nd. Plus, with 3.5 mio people living in Berlin there should be enough people to visit Hertha, ALBA, or the Eisbären...

If Frankfurt wants to have a chance against Berlin, they have to play much better than they did against Hamburg.
Gordon needs to play like in the Quarterfinals, because he let in way too many goals against the Freezers and Berlin is clearly better offensively than Hamburg.

Both teams (Lions and Freezers) would have to rely on excellent goaltending to beat Berlin, but they got the exact opposite this series and I don't expect that to change.

Yeah, so why now make the first round best of seven and then go back to best of five, it does only make sense from a business point of view but otherwise it's a brutal decision!

So everybody is wondering why :D

You're wright, it was a bussiness reason. When they invented best of seven in quarterfinals, it was the season, in which the league was reduced. Therefore two problems accured:

1. Mostly all teams sold their season tickets to the customers while a certain number of home games seemed to be secure.

2. The advantage of having one more play-off home game in front of a capacity crowd was obvious.

So, why they did not change the whole play-offs to best of seven? Well, pretty narrow schedules here in Germany. As you see by now, the german league will finish very shortly before the WC starts, there's simply no more time.

Of course I would prefer the whole thing to be played in the best-of-seven modus.

Well, yes it's 20 minutes, but the rules say something different ;)

The DEL always had the best of five format for the finals. They can't make it longer, because of the World Championships.
Of course you could make the first round best of five and the finals best of seven, but the teams need the money of additional playoff home games, and eight teams are more than two.

Hamburg, Mannheim, Cologne and Berlin are the standouts in german professional hockey. they got the best connectoins to NA due to their coaches( Stewart or Page) and by far the best practice facilities. Today is the deciding game for the lions at home to end it up in 4. Let's hope they can make it!!
