Remax 03-10-2004, 04:44 PM Just wanting to know what people think Canada's roster might look like at the Worlds this year. It is getting close to the end of the regular season so we are getting a better picture of which players will be available for the team. Give a list of 2-3 goalies, 6-8 defense and 12-15 forwards please. What about rookies, does anyone think that any of them will have a chance to play such as Staal, Horton, Fleury, Bergeron, Hunter? If so include them in your list and an explanation of why or why you don't think that they will get invited. My list as of how the standings are right now is as follows:
Goalies
Roberto Luongo
Marc Denis
Chris Osgood (If Not In Playoffs)
Jocelyn Thibault(If Healthy)
Defense
Derek Morris
Steve Staios
Eric Brewer
Jason Smith
Nathan Dempsey (If Not In Playoffs)
Rick Jackman
Jay Bouwmeester
Chris Pronger (If Not In Playoffs)
Al MacInnis (If Healthy) (If Not In Playoffs)
Barret Jackman (If Healthy) (If Not In Playoffs)
Forward
Ryan Smyth (LW)
Luc Robitaille (LW) (If Not In Playoffs)
Rick Nash (LW)
Kyle Calder (LW)
Shane Doan (RW)
Alexandre Daigle (RW)
Nathan Horton (RW)
JP Dumont (RW)
Danny Heatley (RW)
Marc Savard (C)
Daniel Briere (C)
Mark Messier (C)
Patrice Bergeron (C)
Anson Carter (C) (If Not In Playoffs)
Eric Lindros (C) (If Healthy)
I think that some rookies will be invited to play, Horton is the only one that made my list because he is just coming off an injury so he will be a little fresher, he is one of the more physical rookies which is usually an attribute that Canada looks at. I do think that Trent Hunter, or Eric Staal could all be on the team too, but Staal plays center which is a very tough position to crack and Hunter is in the playoffs as of right now. :dunno: :handclap: :teach:
Kevin Forbes 03-10-2004, 04:58 PM Rucchin, Carney, Giguere and others from the Ducks might be available
cagney 03-11-2004, 02:53 AM Drury and Carney are American and I hope they both show up for Team USA.
Remax 03-11-2004, 09:47 AM Drury and Carney are American and I hope they both show up for Team USA.
My bad, I knew that and I had him at the top of my list for centers and deleted him because I remembered that and then for some reason I put him down at the bottom a minute later. Its changed now. I also know that Giggy is going to be available and if Thibault is still injured and Osgood makes the playoffs and goes deep into them, then I would probably put Giggy on there, but with the seasons that those others are having compared to his, I can't have them on there right now. I know that Thibault isn't having a great season because he has been injured, but he was doing pretty good before the injury and he will be very fresh having not played since October.
Highly doubt Lindros will play or even be invited.
This year's team might have less rejected invitations than in the past because some players may want to make a case for the World Cup team. Plus, it may be their last chance to play hockey for a while.
Jyssy 03-13-2004, 03:01 PM Alexandre Daigle (RW)
What? Aint he russian?
What? Aint he russian?
No he isn`t. He`s canadian, born in Montreal. Are you mix him up with somebody else?
Jyssy 03-15-2004, 07:53 AM No i dont, always thought that he is russian. Wow, has he ever even been russian?
Hitman* 03-15-2004, 04:05 PM I'd say Kevin Weekes will get invited. Dwayne Roloson as well
dw2927 03-15-2004, 08:38 PM I think that the Cdn keepers would line up this way
1) Luongo
2)Giguere
3) Weekes
replacements in case of injury
-Roloson
-Thibault (if healthy)
-Theodore (if Habs get bounced early)
Vincent Vega 03-23-2004, 05:00 PM What about Wes Walz?
Rabid Ranger 04-01-2004, 10:10 AM I think that the Cdn keepers would line up this way
1) Luongo
2)Giguere
3) Weekes

-Roloson
-Thibault (if healthy)

Luongo has been confirmed: http://www.canoe.ca/Slam040401/col_garrioch-sun.html
Rabid Ranger 04-04-2004, 04:35 PM Watching the Anaheim/Calgary game, it seems Rob Niedermayer and Giguere are on the team as well.
canucks16 04-04-2004, 10:11 PM what about Todd Bertuzzi??
My opinion is that he will be there when the puck drops for the World Cup.
They need him for the Northamerican type of game,
just imagin a line of:
Nash Thornton Bertuzzi
leafaholix* 04-06-2004, 02:18 AM Hell no.
He doesn't deserve to take up a spot on the roster for the World Championships.
SwissPatRangers 04-06-2004, 10:24 AM I know that Brière, Heatley, Bouwmeester and Luongo are going to play for Canada. It was confirmed a few minutes ago in Switzerland (the information was given because Canada and Switzerland are in the same group).
mikkoz 04-06-2004, 12:28 PM Team Canada has 16 players at the moment:
Jean-Sebastien Giguere Goaltender Montreal, QC Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
Roberto Luongo Goaltender Montreal, QC Florida Panthers
Marc Denis Goaltender Montreal, QC Columbus Blue Jackets
Jay Bouwmeester Defense Edmonton, AB Florida Panthers
Willie Mitchell Defense Port McNeill, BC Minnesota Wild

Canada Girl 04-06-2004, 07:13 PM Yay Captain Canada is back!!!!
Ryan Smyth, Eric Brewer, Shawn Horcoff, Andy Sutton, and Marc Denis have all been named to the team.

L3DZ3P 04-06-2004, 07:49 PM If the habs get bump in first round maybe Ryder and Ribeiro could join the squad.
Mitchell and Sutton? That blueline is going to have one hell of a nasty streak.
Tricolore#20 04-16-2004, 04:23 PM So they are going to train in Hungary this upcoming week? Should be interesting.
Bobby Ryan Getzlaf 04-18-2004, 01:22 AM Unless he declined, they should've invited Nedved. He could do well for them. Likely better than Horcoff or Williams or Niedermayer.
psuflyer 04-19-2004, 04:01 PM Unless he declined, they should've invited Nedved. He could do well for them. Likely better than Horcoff or Williams or Niedermayer.
Isn't he Czech ? and i think its great that Williams will be their absoultely my favorite Flyer while he was here.

He is a CDN citizen.. played for Canada in the 94 Olympics.. or was it the 92.. I don't remember which but he did heh.
Canada Girl 04-19-2004, 05:56 PM They added three more players: Jeff Friesen, Brenden Morrow, and Scott Niedermayer!! :handclap: I'm so glad, was really hoping either he or Pronger would join the team!

The article says it's the first time both Niedermayers have played for the same team since minor hockey (aw!)
NJ_Devil_Boy 04-19-2004, 05:59 PM Friesen

Brodeur is probably injured and in turn declined the invite. I dont think Nieds should have accepted either ... he just looks too damn tired.

could say the same for steve Staios
Lundmark17 04-19-2004, 07:44 PM Broduer probably wasn't asked because Canada already has 3 goalies and it wouldn't look good for them if they "cut" a player.
Bobby Ryan Getzlaf 04-19-2004, 11:54 PM Brodeur is probably injured and in turn declined the invite. I dont think Nieds should have accepted either ... he just looks too damn tired.
I think the whole "playing with your brother for the first time since their minor hockey days" part could be an incentive. And he's RFA, and so is Rob, so they likely won't be on the same team next year, either, unless they lower the UFA age and he comes to Anaheim(I would give my arm for that to happen).
Also, about Nedved, he defected, and is considered a Canadian citizen. The Czechs refused him last year. I think he'd do good on the Canadian roster.
And how did Friesen make it. Gawd, that was the biggest disappearing act I've ever seen.
Looks like a really solid team that will be hard to score on. The only problem is that they might have a little trouble putting the puck in the net.
Lets see who joins the team over the next couple of days. Glen Murray would be a welcome addition.

How, or more correctly, why did Friesen make it? Simply put, he can skate. After years of selecting Charley Simmer type players (with their bloated NHL statistics) to successive Team Canadas, we have finally learned. The only way to succeed at the international level, is to select good skating, high tempo players. Friesen fits the bill perfectly. He is one of the most explosive skaters in the NHL who will be able to take advantage of the extra ice to initiate offensive chances and execute his defensive responsibilities. It was an excellent choice. If you are a Team Canada fan, Scott Niedermayer's decision to join the team can only be viewed with consumate glee. Niedermayer joins Boumeester, Morris and Brewer to give Canada probably its best (read: most mobile) defence that it has ever had at these World (read: European) Championships.
That is all.
Chandler55 04-20-2004, 01:13 PM No i dont, always thought that he is russian. Wow, has he ever even been russian?
Maybe you mixed him up with Yashin, in the Daigle-Yashin days.

It would be nice if either Wade Redden or Bryan McCabe get added on. One of them will be available after tonight.

Hence the reason for 4 Oilers on the team.
Plus Smyth is Captain Canada. I think he's got the most World Championship GP in Canadian history. Damn Edmonton and their playoff misses and 1st round exits.

Shane 04-20-2004, 05:51 PM I wouldn't be surprised to see Ed Jovanovski or Brendan Morrison joining the team. The World Cup management team has said they look highly upon players who play in the World Championships, and with Jovanovski and Morrison likely vying for a spot on the World Cup team...

I don't know why you hate the Canucks so much, but your opinion is no longer valid. Maybe Jovanoski ran over your dog or something, I don't know. But, between this, the Auld thread, and every other thread where you rip on the Canucks for no apparent reason, I don't think any reasonable person, Canucks fan or not, takes you seriously anymore.
Welcome to my ignore list, population: You.
EDIT: Oh, I just discovered possibly the most hilarious thing ever. Not only do you think Jovanovski is a 5th or 6th defenceman at best, but you voted him as THE THIRD BEST defenceman in the league!

No problem I was a fan , but I've lost all respect for them last year after year after year of choking , and trading away Bure :shakehead It still pisses me off Soooo much talent , but Jovo is great in season , but In playoffs him and the whole team plays like a minor team , except Auld which I apologised for .
EDIT BUDDY I WAS TALKING ABOUT HIS PLAYOFF PLAY THIS YEAR .
and trading away Bure :shakeheadFor Jovanovski to turn out the way he did was gravy for the Canucks. He left Florida marred in obscurity and as a one year rookie wonder. he re-established himself in Vancouver and Pavel Bure was never going to play the Canucks again anyways

Exactly how did him and his giveaways help the Canucks ?
lace-em'-up 04-20-2004, 07:49 PM isn't turco canadan.
Lundmark17 04-20-2004, 11:23 PM Yes, Turco's Canadian. I don't think Jovo or Redden will be asked because I don't think team Canada will carry 8 defence or cut anyone. It'd be great to have have Morrison though. Canada needs roughly 3 more forwards (they only have 10). How about Spezza and Cooke as well? That is if they accept.
I'm surprised nothing has been heard of from Steve Sullivan he usually is there for the tournement.

his wife had a baby toward the end of the season, and he's taking some time off to be with her and his new baby daughter. scott walker also had a baby girl, and turned down an invitation for the same reason.
The Mars Volchenkov 04-21-2004, 04:29 PM Canada should invite Mike Fisher
rye&ginger 04-21-2004, 04:55 PM Exactly how did him and his giveaways help the Canucks ?
Stay out of Canadian threads if you just want to spew crap. Jovo was clutch in the Olympics and will be on the team again. You arent the coach so drop it.
Redden and Jovo make an awesome pairing so I think they should go to the WC's to prepare for hte World Cup. I dont think either is injured and Jovo missed about 25 games late in the year due to an injury so he isnt tired.
rye&ginger 04-21-2004, 04:57 PM So which is it buddy?
Clearly, he cant decide for some reason. Who cares, ignore list rules.

Hmm did you even watch that series. Jovo had 4p was a +2 and Canucks best d-man. Jovo would be a top 2 dman on any team in the NHL.
Bure forced a trade and refused to play for the Canucks, I dont see how you can hate the canucks for trading a player that didnt want to play for them..

My lines:
Ryan Smyth/Shawn Horcoff/Glen Murray
J.P. Dumont/Daniel Briere/Dany Heatley
Jeff Friesen/Brendan Morrison/Justin Williams
Brenden Morrow/Matt Cooke/Rob Niedermayer
Patrice Bergeron, 13th forward
Smyth-Horcoff-Murray (Horcoff and Smyth played most of the year together in Edmonton, Murray adds more size to that line)
Dumont-Brière- (Dumont and Briere were together in Buffalo, Briere and Heatley had terrific chemistry in last year's WC)
Friesen-Morrison-Williams (Speed, speed, and more speed)
Morrow-Cooke-Niedermayer (Would make playing against Canada very difficult on the opponents)
Bergeron, Patrice - 13th forward (give him some experience filling in, maybe if he proves his worth could take over the tournament like J-Bo last year)
Additionally, I agree with your defensive pairings.
mikkoz 04-23-2004, 03:34 PM My lines:
Brière
Briére is really good on big ice. Lookin forward seeing some good goals from J.P. Dumont/Daniel Briere/Dany Heatley!b

Cooke hasn't played center since early in his junior career. he doesn't even take draws when the center is waved out. he can play either wing however.

OK that works. Cause Niedermayer has played a lot of center in his career. I knew Cooke played center early in his career and thought he had played some since. Oh well.
