Magnus Kahnberg's SEL team is in the middle of a playoff series with HV-71. HV-71 currently leads the series 2-0. Magnus has 4G and 1 A in five games for Frolunda.

Here are his season stats:

2003-2004 Frölunda SEL 50 33* 16 49 20

*Denotes team record. Previous record holder: K. Huselius (32)

Niklas Nordgren is also involved in a SEL playoff series. His team, Timra, is currently playing Farjestad. Nordgren scored the lone goal for Timra in a 4-1 loss.

Here are his season stats:

2003-2004 Timrå SEL 46 13 15 28 44

Ward is just playing great hockey right now i've heard. The WHL is starting the playoffs soon, and Red Deer should be a serious contender. It would be great for Cam Ward to add another accolade to his resume.

DesRochers is actually performing better in the AHL than I had expected. He might just have a future in the NHL as a backup.

Great work, Macabre.

I was pretty surprised when I saw Kevin Nastiuk's numbers. From what I have read, he has the potential to be a backup or a good 1a type of guy. He's got a long ways to go though.

Vagrant
03-19-2004, 02:13 PM
I'm still a little unsure about Nastiuk. He plays behind Cam Barker, which would help most goaltenders. Also, he's not even in the top 20 in the league with that 2.77 GAA. He ranks at 21st. He also ranks 27th in the league in save percentage. Despite his 40 wins, his numbers aren't that attractive considering Barker is in front of him.

I'm not sure of the teams that are going to make it to the frozen four, but it would be great if Danny Richmond and Michigan could do so and for you to get an extended look at him. I've seen very little of him, sans the WJC goal medal game. I'd be the most interested in your take on him.

Magnus Kahnberg scored a goal and an assist in the most recent game for Frolunda vs. HV-71. That brings his grand total to 7 games 5 goals and 2 assists. The series is 1-2 now.

From eliteprospects.com:

Magnus Kahnberg who scored a goal and an assist and was also the player of the game. Kahnberg's goal was the high-light of the game as he made two defensemen in the right corner, moved in front of the net and fooled Jarmo Myllys in net.

JR would have to be a fool to not give Kahnberg an extended look this summer. The Forecaster had Magnus in their top 75 prospects list. 33 goals is impressive no matter what professional level you're playing at. I'd say his 33 goals in the SEL in 50 games is probably about the same as scoring 40-45 in an AHL season. Whew.

Here are Richmond's stats for the year for the OHL's London Knights:

7 Richmond, Danny 59 13 22 35 10 92 7 0 0.59 1.56

Playoff stats:

7 Richmond, Danny 1 2 0 2 4 2

Two goals in his first postseason game as well as being a +4!

From an article on the site: But with the game 1-0 in the third and victory hanging in the balance, the puck went back to Danny Richmond at the point. His wrist shot was screened and it beat Matt Anthony.

Cam Ward stopped 52 shots in Red Deer's double overtime game vs. the Calgary Hitmen. Also, his shutout the other day was stopping 36 shots instead of the 26 that I posted. He allowed 3 goals on 55 shots.

Kevin Nastiuk also posted a shutout in his first WHL playoff game and followed that up with a 2 goal on 31 shots effort for Medicine Hat over Swift Current. Matej Trojovksy must be injured because I didn't see his name on the boxscore icetime sheet.

Tonight is the 2nd game of the series for Danny Richmond and the OHL's London Knights. Should be interesting, i'll post results later.

ive read that kahnberg is the scorer as well, but it seems that nordgren has developed into one of the best players over there. he plays two ways and is one of the fastest skaters in the league. would you rather keep c adams, marty murray, or nordgren? i would like to see him myself - even if only to play on the third line. maybe he becomes a pj axelson type. couldnt hurt. he probvably has a higher skill level than our average 3/4 liner, yet is apparantly smart defensively.

Well, i'm hesitant about those guys ever since Tommy Westlund came over after having a big year in the SEL and pretty much dropping off the face of the earth in Carolina. Westlund was touted the same way, he even went so far as to win the SEL goal scoring race with 29 goals in 46 games for Brynas IF Gavle.

He developed into a great penalty killer but brought essentially nothing else to the table. Now, he's back in the SEL with Leksands IF.

I'm just more convinced that Kahnberg is the real deal from hearing people talk. Nordgren doesn't get the hype and isn't as flashy as Kahnberg, but could still be productive.

nordgren was born in '79, so by HF criteria, is no longer considered a prospect. i was going to add a profile on him earlier last year, but HF wants to focus on prospects under 24. i'm based in ontario, so have never seen him play. stats alone, it looks like his offensive production really slipped from last year with Timra (check out www.hockeydb.com). I'd head over to the Swedish country board and ask about him there. predatore is one reader/writer who provides a lot of updates on the swedish players. he is also a writer for an excellent website www.eliteprospects.com where you can find info on Nordgren.

7 Richmond, Danny 4 4 3 7 8 2 0 2

Those stats are insane. +8 was highest on the team, for those who say he can't play defense. He scored two shorthanded goals and led all defensemen in scoring.

Ryan Rorabeck has been playing very well for the St. Mike's Majors in the post-season, who are one game away from eliminating Brampton and moving on to the OHL Eastern Conference finals. Rorabeck is playing smart two-way hockey, contributing 5 points in 10 games, and is helping the Majors completely shut down the Battalion's big 3 of Wolski, Henrich and Kreps up front. The Oshawa native has really improved this year, and should be set for a career year next season. I've seen about 20 of the Majors' games this year, and Rorabeck has really established himself as a good character leader, who has a knack for scoring in the clutch. I wouldn't get too excited about his NHL future just yet, but for a 9th round pick, Rorabeck is definately progressing nicely.

FYI, heard Rutherford on his weekly radio interview yesterday (I assume this is the last for a while), and he had a lot of good things to say about Kahnberg and the season he has had in Sweden. While he didn't come out and say he expects him to be here in preseason and get a strong look, it was pretty clear that is what he had in mind.

Thanks, bleedgreen. That's a pretty good read. Richmond is the type of player that needs the most defensive help. The offensive defenseman who has put up a consistant amount of points at the Junior A and Canadian Major Junior level and has never really had much defensive responsibility. His offensive game is a lot like that of Neidermeyer, but his defensive game is nowhere near. I've seen a few Knights fans affectionaly refer to Richmond as "Captain Turnover", for his blunders in the defensive zone. Actually, another year in Juniors might be the best thing for Richmond because it appears as if he's dedicated himself this season to conditioning and training and it's interesting to see that he's added 10 lbs. of muscle to that skinny frame of his.

Richmond and the London Knights lost a heart-breaker at home in game 7 of the OHL's Western conference finals against Guelph and have been eliminated from the post-season. Richmond really struggled in his own end during the series, and made glaring mistakes on two of Guelph's goals. In total, Richmond had a pretty good season, but this final series showed he still has a ways to go in his own end with decision-making and positioning. It will be interesting to see where he ends of next season. With an Aug. 84 dob, Richmond could return to London as an overager, but is also eligable to turn pro and could end up in Lowell (AHL) or Florida (ECHL).

Richmond ended the play-offs with a stats line of (15GP 5G 6A 11Pts 10PIM), although most of those points came in the first round against Windsor, where London absolutely drubbed the Spitfires.

think the canes are so high on him (deservedly? who knows) he'll be in lowell next year. they arent big on having prospects in juniors - they are pretty desperate for good young players and tend to push them as far as they can. from everything ive read richmond is a couple of years away - and we are very short on quality d prospects. id be surprised if one of thelen, green, oneill, or longshot barker didnt end up the canes pick.

From what I've heard from JR, the organization is looking to take it slow with Richmond. They seem to appreciate the promise that the kid has, but you have to admit they've been burned a lot lately by trying to rush defensemen before they're ready. I'd look for Danny to get as far as a support role in Lowell AT BEST this coming season, and for him to spend at least two full years in the minors before they take a look at him in the Canes top 6.

i agree that thats what they should do with him, but as you say - they have been burned by rushing d men in the past. thats usually because we dont have the depth to be patient - which hasnt changed much. i dont think richmond will get any further than the minors either (next year), but i think jr feels no choice but to get him there as quickly as possible. if he had a good first half of a season in the minors - i bet they would call him up just to see if he could hack it. i hope they are finally learning their lesson. i would like to see malec and fast get a shot at a roster spot next season. i think fast could help out a lot if he can play at all in his own end. i thought malec looked pretty good in the few games he played. i know none of us would like it, but i could see richmond being trade bait for us to move up in the draft-or land a further developed young player this off season. i think they want to get more pieces like williams - and richmond, ward, and oneill are the players other teams would want. i dont think they can trade ward - so im a little worried about richmond.

Here's my take on the D situation in the short run ...

1. The way the defense played after JR dealth Markov to Philly probably took some heat off of the youth in general IMO. Hill and Wesley will probably be back for one more go-round if the new CBA budget will allow the expense, and Fast's great rebound from a horrible start in the AHL just adds another layer of insurance when it comes to the two guys with real upside ... Malec and Richmond. When you figure that St Jacques was pretty clearly NHL quality before his injury (suffered in training camp we find out after the fact), that Wallin has proven that he is capable of being an every game player and that the guys that are signed long term ... Hedican and Ward ... both look really comfortable in Laviolette's system ... the bottom line bodes well for yet another low key but fairly effective Canes defense group.

2. Now add in that Rutherford really made some consistent noise about going out and spending whatever budget he's got on a defenseman that can help the power play. That's where the club would likely be most tempted to push the envelop with a young guy like Richmond or Malec ... and God knows they REALLY need a power play QB like nobody's business.

All said ... I think they're set up to allow both Richmond and Malec to grow at their own pace, at least for the forseeable future.

Saw Niklas Nordgren play yesterday, although he doens't count as a prospect any more due to age (born '79). He was among the best players on the ice with his skating and created goalopportunites on almost any shift. He, along with Henrik Zetterberg, was the best players on the ice. The PP unit consisted of Aki Berg, Teemu Aalto, Henrik Zetterberg, Fredrik Modin and Niklas Nordgren and was dominant in the offensive zone.

Nordgren scored two goals in the game. On the first he skated into the offensive zeon a shot an impressive shot from the blue which beat the goalie. On the second he was on a 2-1 breakway, faked a pass a shot himself near the firt post. Very beautiful. His line with Valery Krykov and Robert Carlsson was in my eyes the best throughout the game.

anyone else notice that ladd already has 73 pims? its significantly higher than anyone in his point total area. did someone kick his dog? has he been fighting, or just taking a lot of bad minors? i know his scouting report said he had a physical side to him - but he is on his way to over 200 pims!

Fast is the On again Off again Captin for the Lock Monsters. He was a healthy scratch for the last two games (or 2 outta the last 3) this is his 3rd of the season. Coach wanted to send a message to the team that they need to work and they will be held accountable for their actions, or lack there of! When interviewd about why Brads been scratched, he said that Brad is a very skilled player and its not from a lack of effort, but he thinks that hes over thinking to much and not reacting.

In 11 games Brads 1(g) 1(a) *which is VERY low for him as offensive as he is* hes -1 with 19 in pim

What's up with Kahnberg? Why are his totals so low?

Depends on several things.

1. Last season simply every shot he shot at goal went in. To be that productive is remarkable, so it's not surprising his number have dropped this season.

2. What is a little bit surprising is though, that his numbers have dropped so much. But also that has a explanation: The lockout. Frölunda now has four lines which is very good, and the icetime for Kahnberg have decreased, as well as the PP time. The line with Alfredsson, Påhlsson and Axelsson eats a lot of icetime in all situations at the moment. But don't misunderstand, Kahnberg plays PP, and has a good amount of icetime, BUT not as much as last year.

Kahnberg started out the season a little slow but have after christmas heated up more and more. Especially after the SHG he have been one of Frölundas best players IMO. You should also remember he faces better defenseman this season, will all lockouted players.

Kahnberg had a good tournament with Sweden in SHG, and played alongside Zetterberg and Hedström most of the time. He scored a goal and had one or two assists (don't remember) and is a candidate for Sweden in the upcoming worlds.

In Frölundas first playoff game for the season Magnus Kahnberg scored two goals and played on his team's best line with Dallas prospect Joel Lundqvist and Detroit prospect Jari Tolsa.

On the first goal he broke into the slot, made some shifty moves and released a nice hard shot.

The second one he also skated in the middle, recived a pass and put it in the post, but managed to score on the rebound.

Another note:
Frantisek Kaberle played a very good game with Modo. I'm impressed with his calmness in the own zone, he do easy moves and make safe plays. He also had some dangerous shots on the PP, and made a nice pass through the box, where Daniel Sedin made another crosspass in front of the crease, but Henrik Sedin put in the post.

Well, for the first Modin and Nordgren are different players.

Nordgren have the skating and work ethics to make it in the NHL. If he aint able to translate his scoring touch to the smaller rinks he'll be a valuable third line energy guy IMO. He is a player I think would make Carolina a better team, his work ethics and intensity can get a whole team going.

My opinion as well.

But I think Kahnberg has a legit shot at making the Hurricanes top-6. Brind'Amour and Staal I assume are the top-centers, and Cole and O'Neill the other two that are granted spots in the top-6. I think Vrbata and Kahnberg could round out that top-6, with Adamsx2, Vascisek and Nordgren in the bottom lines.

But of course, I don't know so much about other prospects in the system, and don't know that much about the Hurricanes team either, so my predictions could be a little inaccurate. Also, I'm very baised when talking about the swedish players, but I belive, and many with me, that both Kahnberg and Nordgren are quality players. If there had been no lockout both would probably play in the Worlds, but still with all the lockouted players in Europe, they have both a chance to make the team. I think that say a lot of their quality. But how they react to the NA style of play is yet to be seen.

Magnus Kahnberg netted two goals today when Frölunda won 4-0 vs Djurgården, and won the series 4-1. The team now will play the SEL finals.

Kahnberg is impressing me with his shifty moves and his scoring touch. I really hope he'll be on the World Championships roster, and it could very well be so. Players such as Freddy Modin, Markus Näslund, Andreas Johansson, Thomas Holmström, Mats Sundin, Johan Davidsson and Peter Forsberg have declared they won't play, so there must be other offensive players to fill those roster spots. Kahnberg is a hot candidate for one of this spots IMO.

Plus he's got 9 points in 6 games since the new year. I guess one of his resolutions was to produce more offense!

Jack Johnson scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Ferris State last night. U-M sweeps Ferris, advancing them to the CCHA Final Four next weekend at Joe Louis Arena.

From the Ann Arbor News..after Johnson's goal Saturday night...

The crowd, including Johnson's parents, chanted: "Three more years, three more years,'' for the school's highest-ever NHL Draft pick - No. 3 overall last summer by the Carolina Hurricanes.

"The only way you're going to get me out of here is at gunpoint,'' said Johnson, who supplanted Dean Turner as the school's all-time highest scoring freshman defenseman.

I don't know what to think about Jack Johnson's comments. I can go either way with that but I rather he takes his lumps in the NHL next season. At least one more year in college but the college game won't help him like the AHL could have this year. To each their own.

In Game # 1 of the Playoffs VS. Regina Pats
-He collected 2 assists and and had 2 Penalty Minutes,he helped the Saskatoon Blades win game #1 in O.T 3-2,Saskatoon leads the series 1-0

My Report
-He is kind of slow but makes up for it by being strong on the puck and is very hard to knock off of the puck

-He throws hard punishing hits(his 6'4 220 lbs frame is used very well)

-He is very good on breakaways(along with his teamates Wacey Rabbit,(Boston Bruins) and Devin Setoguchi(SJ Sharks)

-He is not afraid to go into the corners and not afraid to mix it up or stick up for his teamates.

I will post another update after game # 2(after I get back from the game)

Thanks for the update, Sask Leafs Fan. I've always been pretty curious about what other people thought about his long term upside in the NHL. He has a great body for the game, but people question his drive and finish around the net. If you can see anything that would indicate what you think of his work ethic, then I would be curious to find out what you thought.

Also, does this kid have the hands to be on a scoring line in the NHL or is he a primary checking style center?

I think that he has a very good work ethic and does not quit(except when he is out for a long shift and slows down.

I think that yes he does have the hands to become a scoring centre, but the problem with him becoming a checking centre would be INJURIES and his history with concussions and upper body injuries.

He is a smooth skating centremen and has a good sense of where to be when the puck is around the net.

I hoped this helped you answer your question. Is there anything else you or anybody would like to know about Joe Barnes?

Thanks for the great response, we don't very often get to see a lot of CHL action here in NC unless we have dish packages so it's good to get information about our prospects from people who get to see them a lot in person.

Interesting to know that he's a smooth skating centerman, as with his big frame it would be a little more likely to see him struggle in that aspect of his game. Is there any real reason that his stats took such a big hit this year or has he simply not had lady luck on his side? I was expecting at least what he did last year considering he was an overager if i'm thinking correctly.

Well, I just checked on my own information and i'm pretty well off. Barnes is a June 86 and is still 19 years old this year.

He also has a better PPG this year than last year, but hasn't stayed healthy enough to get the points going on a consistant basis. Still, with his skill set I was expecting more dominant numbers.

he scored 1 goal and was the 2nd star of the game.

He was very effective, played well because not only is he on a very talented line with Devin Setoguchi(SJ Sharks) and Aaron Bader(undrafted/Free Agent) but he would probably play just as good if he was not on a line with such good players, he threw some very big/punishing hits(which he always does,it is good to see)

I hope you guys are getting excited about him because he seems to have a very promising future. :teach:

HURRICANES AND RIVER RATS INK AFFILIATION DEAL (http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1497)

DaveG
04-04-2006, 06:11 PM
goalies: well if we are the only team with Albany next year my best guess would be for Kowalski and Nastiuk. Justin Peters can't be counted out of the mix there either, I personally think he's the best of the bunch (asside from Cam of course)

defense: it should look a lot different from what is going in Lowell right now, which is probably not a bad thing at all. My best guess is that Babchuk and Hajt will make the journy from Lowell, with Ryan Pottruff (don't know too much about) and Brett Carson (excelent two-way defenseman IMO). I don't know if the Canes will persue Casey Borer to have him forgoe his Senior season or not, but he's another one you could possibly see in Albany and I personally think he'll be an excelent NHL d-man eventually. Any FAs we bring in are your guess as well as mine.

forwards: this is where the Canes REALLY need some help prospect wise. You MIGHT get a season of Andrew Ladd depending on any FA losses/signings for the big team in the offseason. I suspect that Estrada, Saviano, Bellissimo, Aucoin, Peat and Gove will come over from Lowell, as well as bringing Joe Barnes in from the Blades. Unless they can convince Rajamaki to come over, everyone else up front will be a FA signing. Aucoin has been phenominal at the AHL level this year, so you should get some excitement out of him at the very least.

bellissimo seems like he's italian. and being italian myself, i can tell you he'll have alot of diving penalties on him. its the soccer in all italians that tell us to do it.

Aucoin has been a star in the A this year, so hopefully he continues that trend with you guys. I haven't seen much of Bellissimo lately, but he was absolutely dominant in the prospect tournament this pre-season so hopefully he can bring that to the AHL level. Peat, well, basically he's an enforcer with a good bit of skill to go with it, so he won't be soft by any meens although from what I recall he's by no meens a true heavyweight.

Good to hear (other then the major miff of course). I honestly think this guy is going to be a big time gamer for us as long as we can keep him. He's good enough to be at the top of quite a few other teams goalie prospect charts, but here he's stuck behind Ward for the forseeable future. Bobby Hughes:

2006-07 Regular Season Kingston Frontenacs 9 7 11 18 -5

2 PPG in the OHL is pretty impressive. Hughes is off to a great start, let's hope he can keep it up!

Harrison Reed:

2006-07 Regular Season Sarnia Sting 8 3 6 9 3 4

Over a point per game average, which is up from last season, and the most impressive note is that he's a plus 3 as opposed to the -31 that he finished last year. Would like to see more goals from Harrison, but you can't argue with overall production.

Stefan Chaput:

Only 3 points in 10 regular season games. All assists. He has 22 PIM's and is a +3.

Jamie McBain:

3 points in 4 games with Wisconsin. +1 rating. Looks like he's fitting in pretty well on a talented team.

Last season he was in and out of the BC lineup. It's not that Kunes is bad or anything it's just that BC is deep on the blueline. When Tim has played, he hasn't been bad. Still very much a project and has some things to work on but we'll see how his development has progressed as the season goes along. BC's regular season just kicked off last week.

Some random thoughts from the minors (Albany lost 4-3 to Hershey tonight--boxscore (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1002313)):

-you know your offense is in trouble when Jesse Boulerice is your leading goal scorer. He had another two goal-game tonight. The rest of the team has a serious case of hands of cement.
-It wasn't Justin Peters' best game, but in his defense, two of the goals against were clear breakaways (including the game winner), and one was on the 7 minute penalty kill caused by Brad Isbister beating up some guy (for no obvious reason) at center ice. Actually, Isbister has gotten tossed from the last two games. Perhaps it's time to let Shane Willis play.
-I'm not really not sure what to think about Joe Barnes yet. He's still just kind of there--doesn't impress in any way, but isn't a big liability either.

Hughes with two goals and an assist in a 6-0 win against the Ice Dogs last night. He's now fourth in OHL scoring with 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points in 17 games. Brett Carson has been here for about 2 1/2 weeks. When he first came up from Florida he probably only played about 10-12 minutes a game, and only at even strength. Now he's playing both on the PP and the PK, and has looked pretty good so far.

Offensive D-man with solid upside (2nd pairing possibly... hopefully). At this point there's no telling if he's going to be a top 4 guy or AHL fodder. VERY raw player that still has a lot of development to go through before he can sniff the NHL, but as a freshman he's currently tied for 2nd in scoring for Notre Dame's defensemen. And, if what I've read is correct, he had a very impressive showing at the US WJC tryout camp this year.

Mostly on assists but he has shown the ability to put the puck in the net on a regular basis. Does the guy have the potential to eventually make an impact for the 'Canes?

Justin Peters (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=1384) finally picked up his third win of the season, making 38 saves during the game and nine saves during an eleven-round shootout as Albany defeated Providence 4-3. (Boxscore (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1002532)). Keith Aucoin (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?id=89) (who else) had the shootout winner, and Joe Barnes (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?id=1378) had a goal and an assist for his first multi-point game. Newly acquired defenseman Mark Flood (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?id=308) has two goals in his first three games with Albany.

Wow. I'm surprised Aucoin wasn't used until the 11th round. Is he generally that bad on shootouts because he seems to be the team's offensive leader.

He was also used in the 1st and 7th rounds.
AHL shootouts don't follow the NHL format. Shootouts start out with five rounds, then sudden death, but each team can only select five players for the entire shootout, so once they go past five rounds, the same players will shoot again.

Justin Peters made 24 saves--a couple of them of the outstanding variety--for his first shutout as a pro as Albany defeated Springfield 4-0. It was the first time this season that Peters has won back-to-back games. He also added an assist for his first point as a pro. Needless to say he was named first star of the game. :)

Justin Peters made 29 saves for his third straight win as Albany defeated Providence 2-1. (Game-by-game stats for Peters (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=1384)). In less happy news, Joe Barnes left the game in the third period after being the victim of a wicked open-ice collision. He stayed down for quite awhile, didn't quite look like he knew where he was, and had to be helped off the ice.

How about our two forwards in the OHL?

Bobby Hughes in 32 games-played, has scored 25 goals and tallied 28 assists.

Harrison Reed in 32 games-played, has scored 12 goals and tallied 28 assists.

I think both of these guys have a bright future in our system and eventually with our 'Canes.

I definitely would like to see both get a longer look in camp next season at the very least. Secondary scoring is something we're lacking in a big way and both Hughes and Reed could fill that role nicely. Frankly it's good to see some guys in the pipeline having offensive explosions beyond our first round picks, with our focus on d-men the past few years it's not something I'm used to seeing. ;)

Magnus Akerlund
Daniel Manzato

Couldn't find any statistics for either Akerlund or Manzato. Every other player's statistics should be up-to-date as of tonight.

Awsome, thanks for the update man. And yeah, for some reason euro goalies especially are hard to get stats on. I'd be interested in seeing how they are doing, IIRC Manzato had a breakthrough season last year and even won the rookie of the year in the Swiss league.

Edit:
In case you were wondering or simply having a hard time finding him, Kevin Nastiuk is on loan to the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL this year, although he's been injured for most of it. He's 4-3-1-1 but has a GAA of 3.67 and save percentage of .881 in 9 games.

JustJoe2k5
12-21-2006, 12:03 PM
Forgot all about Nastiuk, I just looked up players off the list on the 'Canes website. After some more searching, I finally found the statistics for Akerlund and Manzato.

Magnus Akerlund (Skovde / SWE III) - 25 GP / 44 GA / 1.76 GAA / .935% / 5 SO
Daniel Manzato (Basel / SWI) - 27 GP / 91 GA / 3.3 GAA

Manzato seems to be struggling a little bit, but Akerlund looks awesome. Granted he is on a level that would equate to the ECHL over here. It's good to see that we have a couple of promising goalies in the system.

The above article says that Daniel Manzato will be brought to the United States next season. Manzato plans to challenge for the #2 spot behind Cam Ward, but also realizes that he will likely have to settle for a spot on the Albany River Rats roster. I really like this and can't wait to see how Manzato looks in the big leagues.

And they scored 7 goals without Keith Aucoin in the lineup.

The Petruzalek trade has definitely been a good one so far--since they were traded for each other Petruzalek has 18 points in 29 games, Isbister has 16 points in 31 games.

Any word on a healthy forward that could come up in case of emergency provided Erik Cole isn't able to go on Saturday?

I remember you saying Shane Willis had a hernia operation, how is he progresing and when do you expect him back?

Aucoin is healthy--he was just serving his one-game suspension from picking up an instigator in the last five minutes of the last game they played.

Willis is supposed to be out for about 6 weeks, I think.

Whew. That's a shame that his injury came at a time when he could be used in a role on the big squad. Aucoin is a nice option, but he hasnt' really impressed me much at the NHL level.

It looks like Babchuk played a solid game though and wasn't afraid to get that shot off. I'm still wondering how that situation will play out.

I can't really see any good reason for them not to. If they're really going to field a full AHL team by themselves next season they'll need guys like Petruzalek and other non-veteran players.

Has Colorado already announced that they'll look elsewhere after the year? I know both teams have an option to continue the affiliation after this season, I just hadn't heard a definite decision from Colorado.

If that is the case, I would expect we'll look for another team to work with. Although it would be fun to speculate which players would be promoted to the AHL to fill out an entire roster.

Daniel Manzato is a lock.

Anyone here seen Vince Bellissimo in action? He followed up his one goal / two assist performance Friday night with a two goal / two assist performance last night. 16 goals and 28 assists in 34 games-played for Florida. Does he still have potential to develop into a NHL player?

Colorado will be parenting the new AHL team in Cleveland starting next season. It's possible the Canes could still find another NHL team to fill out the roster, although there have been some articles recently that suggest that they are considering going solo. unless Rutherford is tripping on some realllllllly bad stuff, Borer will be in Albany next year (senior and captain of a top 4 NCAA team), if not outright having a shot at playing in Carolina. Blanchard turns 20 and we'd lose his rights if we didn't make him an offer so I'll bet he'll be there too. I wouldn't be shocked to see Vojta either, and I think Lawson will likely get an offer with the season he's having for the Irish.

so the defense would likely look like:
Borer, Carson, Flood, Forrest, Vojta... they really need to find some veteran presence for that blueline group, Forrest would be the oldest at 26

Craig Kowalski registered his fourth straight victory for the Florida Everblades last night, he stopped 30-of-32 shots on goal.

I was able to listen to this game through Florida's website, the announcers seem to think the three straight starts over the weekend and the start last night have really gotten Kowalski in a groove and that he is playing the best he has all year.

What are the chances he gets the call-up to the main club next year? I like John Grahame, but his $1.4 million could be used to address much bigger needs.

Nice article on Petruzalek. I'd like to see him get a shot at the main roster, especially since every compliment the coach had about him is exactly what the 'Canes need out of their players.

Look at his OHL career, he seemed to thrive in the playoffs. 18 points in 21 playoff games in 2004-2005 and 19 points in 14 playoff games in 2005-2006.

Craig Kowalski stopped 32-of-34 shots last night in a 2-1 overtime loss for the Florida Everblades. Radio announcer said there was a badly blown call an essentially blamed the loss on the official as the deciding goal happened just seconds after the missed call. Other than that, sounds like Kowalski was pretty spectacular in goal as it took a while for the Everblades' offense to heat up.

He hasn't been perfect, but he has certainly been very, very good. In the beginning it was very obvious that he was pouting and playing at about half speed, but he seems to have gotten past that.

Haven't had an opportunity to see Kyle Lawson play, but I have a question for those who have. What type of potential does he have as a NHL defenseman? Sounds like he is in the middle of a solid season with Notre Dame, but what effect does his size have on his ability? Would he be able to play defense at the NHL level at only 5'11" and 192 lbs.? Could he potentially make the Scott Walker move to forward once he makes it to the NHL level?

Bobby Hughes has missed quite a few games for Kingston recently, don't know what the story is there. Tyson Strachan has picked up his play since the last update. Magnus Akerlund's team made the playoffs, but his statistics were less than impressive: six games-played with a 4.00 GAA. Basel was one of the worst teams in their league, which may explain why Manzato will be brought to the United States next season. Another year with that type of team in front of him could ruin Manzato's confidence.

Jakub Petruzalek had 3 assists and was named first star of the game in Albany's 6-4 win over Rochester earlier tonight.

File this under things I didn't expect to see, but Brett Carson scored a pretty sweet breakaway goal in tonight's game. He took a pretty blatant penalty right in front of the net. As he stepped out of the box after the penalty expired, Kevin Estrada hit him with a perfect pass. Carson skated in from the blueline, went forehand, backhand, forehand, and tucked it past the goalie. It was great.

Brett Carson was always touted as a kid that had some offensive flair. It's good to see that he's getting a better chance to display that. He still has a long way to go by all accounts though.

Kevin Estrada is a name I haven't heard in a while. I remember hearing on the radio when he was drafted in 2001 and haven't heard from him since.

How did the charity jerseys look on the ice? And was there any word on how much money they raised?

I've listened to the past couple of River Rats' games through the link on their website, really sounds like the Devils didn't let them have any fun or reach out to the community. Announcers constantly mention how they were never able to do anything special when they were the Devils' affiliate.

They weren't quite as hideous as I thought they would be. As Dave Gove said--they had a lot of "character". :D This was the first time they were ever able to have a "theme" jersey since the Devils wouldn't allow anything like that, and the post-game auction raised over $15,000 for Ronald McDonald House--Aucoin's was the second-most expensive at $1,000 (Tyler Weiman's jersey went for $1,100).

For those who don't know what we're talking about I'll attach the design.

Yeah, they certainly are a far cry from their regular jerseys. Happy to hear it went well. The announcers predicted Aucoin would be one of the more popular jerseys.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but Justin Peters was in fact assigned to the Everblades to replace Kowalski. Should be a good opportunity for Justin to play a lot more than he has been lately. The Everblades play again tomorrow night in Florida.

I kind of figured that would happen. Kowalski was comfortable in his role and Florida is fighting for the top spot in the league. Peters certainly has the talent to be able to dominate a league like the ECHL so we'll see how it goes. It could help him get his confidence back on track for Albany as well once Ward gets healthy.

Florida has four games between now and this weekend, so Peters should get some valuable experience. Florida has been on fire offensively recently, so that should help Peters whenever he plays.

Today's HF article was written about the Canes' 6th-round pick this year, Nick Dodge. Can you give me more info about this guy? I've never really heard of him, but seems to be Clarkson's top player this year. Here's the article:
