"23-yeard old Ladislav Scurko has played two junior world championships for Slovakia. And he has three seasons in WHL. The last two he has played in his homecountry for HC Kosice.

But now, the hockeycareer is over.

Arrested yesterday, suspect of murdering the referee Mark Liptaje. The murder happened in December 2007, and the body was found a year later. Scurko has admitted everything in interviews/interegations with the police."

Here is a couple of other links i found on the story. Sad to see it come to this. Just another person to add to the growing list of " we never thought he could do that " people.

Am i a mean person because i laughed at the comment on the end second link that says " 15-20 years for spearing? Jeez, they're really getting tough on penalties in Slovakia. " ?

Truly a sad story as it is the end of two lives in essence.

There has been some speculation in the Slovak media. The police does not want to say anything about the motive, but it isn´t hockey nor money. The latest speculation is that there was some kind of love relationship between Scurko and the ref.

There was a really interesting radio segment about how some players just lose their lives when they stop hockey. I encourage you listen to it, a link is below.

So according to Scurko´s version, he did have qualms and came to the place where he killed the ref and buried the body a week later than the actual murder happened. Also he supposedly even told his teammates that he had killed someone but noone believed him because he was known to be a joke-teller.

It looks like Scurko will soon be free on bail if he can raise 33 000 Euro. It seems strange to me given the brutal nature of the murder, and especially the fact that he as admitted to the crime. Anyhow if I was a referee or linesman in SVK, I would not sleep well in the coming weeks. :)

That joke is so not funny anymore, actually it never was.

But yeah, seriously welcome to banana republic-Slovakia. The country in which the head of justice is Mr. Harabin. Here he tells former mionister of justice Daniel Lipsic :"Pojdes do basy, ty hajzel" which is pretty much "You´ll go to jail, *******" and he did not even admit he said it till it was clear that it was in fact recorded. Let´s just not speak about his contacts with Baki Sadiki, the head of Albanian drug mafia.

I´m not shocked that Scurko is out at all, Kamzik. You might, because I believe that you´ve been living quite away from Slovakia for a while now.

But yeah, on the other hand, am I worried that if I go down the street Scurko will attack me or soemthing? Not at all. Am I worried that I or someone close to me could be killed walking down the street by Daniel Tupy´s murders or some other people of that bread? Yes.

The Kosice regional court overturned a decision today by a municipal court that would have allowed Scurko to make bail while he awaits trial. This decision means Scurko will remain in police custody unless he is eventually proven innocent of his charges, which seems unlikely given he has admitted to murder.

33,000 Euro only? So there might be something that holds water on Scurko side, interesting. The only fact that he has been charged is since he probably never told anybody about the body and hid it, he might have been defending himself.

Sort of like a hit and hide.

Scurko was in court today in Kosice to face his murder charge. He has admitted to killing Poprad referee Marek Liptaj. The two had known each other for a couple years. Things began to sour when Liptaj moved into Scurko's rented flat in Kosice. Scurko said he allowed Liptaj to stay with him when Liptaj told him he had terminal cancer. When Scurko found out this was a lie, Scurko was obviously upset and became focused on getting Liptaj to move out. At this point Liptaj began to threaten Scurko, saying he had friends in the mafia who would harm Scurko and blow up his car. Liptaj also threatened suicide and said he would break up Scurko's relationship with his girlfriend.

On the fateful day in January, Scurko had packed Liptaj's things and was to drive Liptaj back home to Poprad. In the car the two began to argue almost right away, with Liptaj even threatening to jump out of the car. Scurko pulled out a kitchen knife which he said he had with him for self-defence. Scurko said he first nicked Liptaj's neck as a warning that he was serious and that the two should stop arguing. Moments later he stabbed Liptaj in the stomach with the knife, and doesn't remember what happened afterwards.

There are some problems with Scurko's story [i.e. returning to bury the body several days later, Liptaj was stabbed 19 times, etc], and even if it was all true it doesn't justify murder. Scurko faces 7-10 years or 15-20 years depending on the severity of his crime.

Strange turn of events today as Scurko changed his plea to not guilty. His story completely changed. He now says he and Liptaj were driving when Scurko stopped the car at the side of the road in front of another vehicle. Scurko remained in the car while Liptaj got out. Ten minutes passed when Scurko noticed Liptaj's body being carried by two men he didn't recognize. He said the two men put the body into his trunk, one got into the passenger's seat and told him to start driving, while the other followed in their own car. Once they got to Velka Lomnica, the two men transferred the body into their own car. Scurko said he pleaded with the men not to hurt him because it would be a waste of a hockey player.

The trial will continue on October 6th 2010 in Kosice. The police have several witnesses as well as psychological reports, etc. Technically speaking as he now pleads his innocence, the word "allegedly" should be placed in the title of the thread

Scurko was released from prison in November. Probably the best explanation that can be provided is that he was released due to corruption in the Slovak justice system. He served a total of 2.5 years in prison.

8 years for murder is a joke. He already served 2,5 years, and can be freed in 1,5 year because in Slovakia you can be pardoned after serving 1/2 of your sentence.

František Koleno (20), former youth hockey player of HC Martin, got involved into bar fight in December 2011. During his drunk temper tantrum he managed to kick policewoman. Unfortunately for the poor policewoman, she suffered serious knee injury, and the young Koleno (ironically knee in slovakian is Koleno) got 11 years and 7 months.

Are you kidding me? Wow, Slovakia's justice system is worse than Canada's! 2.5 years for murder and 11 years 7 months for kicking a policewoman and hurting her knee? That ref lost his life and 2.5 years of justice were paid, while a sore knee ruins that kids life?

Just sickening...

Your math is wrong, Scurko got 8, out of which 2,5 was served, so he has a good chance to be released after serving 1/2 of his sentence, which is 4 years in his case. Same goes for young Koleno btw. Point remains however, our justice system is a joke because its basicaly saying that cop's knee is worth more than refs life.
