The team there is SC Riessersee, one of the most venerable clubs in german hockey history, ten times national champions in the past. In the mid 90s they played for the last time in Germany's top-tier league, at present they are part of Division 2. Level of play is decent, usually they have a couple of north american imports on roster. Games are being played at Olympiastadion, venue of the 1936 Olympic Hockey Tournament.

2nd-tier hockey in germany is not that bad. as foreigner you should have around ECHL level.

Yes, one level below the DEL
A player I talked to (ECHL/CHL background) had a contract for the 2007-08 season worth roughly 20.000 Euros after taxes, plus free housing, car and a free meal deal with a local restaurant, etc.

Keep in mind that teams agreed not to pay additional costs (electricity ...) for housing anymore. Furthermore, almost every team had to reduce it's payroll by 10-20%.

depends on PO success

usually the players join the teams for first practice in early august. the pre-season games start around mid-august. the season starts early september.
without POs you can plan till march, not sure how the olympics change it next season though. with PO success it's until late april/early may.

Correct.
However, most teams start their conditioning camps by the end of July/early August. Import players, and especially those without prior experience in Germany, get usually signed to some sort of try-out deal and therefore have to impress during preseason to earn the full contract.

and it depends on the teams. some would sign you to a try-out for 6 weeks or so i guess. mexicohockey describes the usual way, but sometimes teams sign to TOs during the season. it depends on how many roster spots the teams have left and how good your references are.

but you shouldn't concentrate on garmisch anyway. the whole region around garmisch is full with hockey teams of 2nd/3rd-tier. it's the region where hockey is popular in germany. so you might have more team options.

If a player gets cut by a team early in the season it occurs that those players get invited as a training guest on another, usually lower tier team.
3rd tier in Germany this coming season looks like pretty much a mess right now. Actually, nobody knows for sure how the league will look like, and the number of imports allowed per team has been reduced to three, which is actually a good thing for german hockey, but that's a different discussion.

My information is that import salaries range from 18-45,000 euros plus car and apartment. Players are now olbligated to pay for hydro, phone and internet. Teams pay the taxes on income for Imports so this income is clear money. Some Bundesliga teams pay better than some DEL teams. Some Oberliga teams pay better than some Bundesliga teams. Shop yourself or have an agent shop yourself around if you are good enough. If you don't have a proven record in Europe settle and prove yourself. Tryout contracts in the Bundesliga are not that common. Most Imports have a guaranteed contract. Maybe one or two per team have tryout clauses.

Teams start up around August 1st for a lengthy 6 week pre-season training camp. This one makes no sense since training camps cost money and teams are crying for money. If Euro teams were smart they would start late August, save their budget dollars and make imports happy. 8 months makes for a long season.

Garmish is a beautiful area. Close to many tourist areas.
