Harrison Ford 11-13-2009, 04:28 PM From a pure goon standpoint, I always liked Brashear. He can still move the puck around and get some decent chances on a 4th line. The fact that he is still around today means a lot too.
From a energy guy, I really like Asham. He will always give you a run for your money and can bring the heat. He is also a super nice guy and has a very powerful slap shot. Clarkson is also getting to me since he is on the Devils.
Funny how I am a Devils fan and my two favorite fighters are on Philly and NYR.
Who is your favorite fighter?
Dr Grant 11-13-2009, 04:36 PM All-time: Randy McKay
Currently: Cam Janssen
HM: Colton Orr
Morris Wanchuk 11-13-2009, 04:37 PM From the past I have to got with Stan Jonathan.
The guy was a little warrior, for his size, he could go with anyone in the league.
As of right now... I like Tootoo, Neil, Thornton, Orr, and Hordichuk (I remember him from his days with the Springfield Falcons).
Mathias 11-13-2009, 04:45 PM All-time: Bob Probert. Just the way he played, if you touched a skilled player on the Red Wings, then he would come after you. If he lost a fight, he would return in a later game and win.
Other all time favorites include: Dan Kordic, Ryan VandenBussche (would fight anyone at any time no matter size), Reid Simpson, Stu Grimson and Dave Brown.
Right now I like Colton Orr and Eric Godard.
The Head Crusher 11-13-2009, 04:50 PM George Laraque
kevinBOOMBOOMbieksa 11-13-2009, 04:59 PM Now, I love watching Rick Rypien and Kevin Bieksa (doesn't seem to fight that often now) from the Canucks.
I don't really have an all-time favorite. Mostly cause I didn't really pay attention to that part of the game until post-lockout.
Caballo Blanco 11-13-2009, 05:13 PM Matt Johnson
JeromeHP 11-13-2009, 05:37 PM how cant you not loved Rick Rypien, that guy is fearless!! the next PJ Stock
Vikke 11-13-2009, 05:40 PM I really like watching Asham fight. And Chris Neil.
Espen 11-13-2009, 05:47 PM My fav is Laraque. He's a great guy off ice also. I wonders if he practices more boxing than hockey, haha.
Mr. Canucklehead 11-13-2009, 06:09 PM Favorite fighter all time: Brad May. In his Buffalo days the guy was a maniac, loved the happy feet he'd have going as he squared off with each guy. Even at 38, he's still going and hanging with some pretty tough guys. Never backed down from a bigger opponent(has tangled with guys like Laraques, Boogaard, Worrell--yes he lost, but that's not the point). Absolutely fearless dude, and a fantastic guy off the ice. My favorite.
Rick Rypien is quickly earning a place in my books too, one of the toughest Canucks I've ever seen play.(was born in 1984, so missed some of the classics like Williams and Fraser, but did see Odjick and Brashear and the like). He's got a great blend of skill and ability.
~Canucklehead~
nyr2k2 11-13-2009, 06:27 PM Nicky Fotiu and Georges Laraque.
I always enjoyed watching Steve Peat in Washington. Not sure why though, heh.
MetalheadPenguinsFan 11-13-2009, 07:02 PM Right now I like Colton Orr and Eric Godard.
Even better...those two scrapping is always fun to watch. ;)
In terms of my favourite I gotta go with my homeboy Godard. He really seems to be a great guy both on the ice and off, he isn't afraid to stand up for his teammates, and most importantly he can dish out the pain, as well as take it.
Plus those haymakers he can throw....ouch. :help:
Personally I feel he fits the role of enforcer on the Penguins much better than BGL did. BGL seemed lazy to me, it seemed he only faught when he really wanted to. Godard however isn't afraid to get right in there at anytime it seems like.
struckbyaparkedcar 11-13-2009, 07:20 PM The hometown guys. Brad May and Rob Ray.
Right now, I like watching Lucic and Rypien scrap.
kkrawler 11-13-2009, 07:37 PM I always enjoyed Wade Belak. If he wasn't fighting he was making you laugh! lol
Terry O'Reilly, Lyndon Byers, Jay Miller and PJ Stock.
LB and Stock being my favorites....
I'm a Bruins guy, so my favorite non-Bruin fighter would probably be Kocur or Probert.
Stock was so entertaining and would never quit...little guy, huge heart.
(Neely would obviously make the list but I don't consider him a fighter...that is that fighting/enforcing wasn't one of his primary roles.)
Vintage93 11-13-2009, 07:42 PM Wendel Clark
****ing pitbull
Homeland Security 11-13-2009, 07:42 PM Always like Eric Godard for some reason.
Tealblood 11-13-2009, 07:54 PM Rivet, douglas murray, staubitz had one amazing one where he bloodied tootoo lol, but otherwise I don't like him much.
Out of the pure goon group...probably boogy or laraque.
quesosauce 11-13-2009, 07:56 PM Ian Lapierrere
El Duderino 11-13-2009, 08:08 PM Rick Rypien is one badass mother****er. He only weighs 10 pounds more than me, but is able to fight some huge guys (and win most of the time!) He's definitely got courage.
AirMinivan 11-13-2009, 08:10 PM Rick Rypien. Homer pick but the guy is explosive as hell and his fights are always exciting slugfests. Also the best fighter in the NHL for his size.
bruinsfan46 11-13-2009, 08:22 PM All time: P.J. Stock, what's not to love?
Currently: Rick Rypien, what an animal.
hockeycore 11-13-2009, 10:58 PM have to say eric godard as when he was a flame, he beat the hell out of boogard.
out of pure bad assness, I've never seen a better goon resume than that of Brian Macgrattan who is a recovering alcoholic and come from a lineage of ontario steel workers. Plus he gets points from his quote a while back stating he wants to lead the league in fighting majors.
Ih8theislanders 11-13-2009, 11:01 PM I love watching Tootoo
KotsyJr 11-13-2009, 11:04 PM Colton Orr. I love his right hand bombs and even when he wins or loses, always walking away with that evil grin. I do miss him in New York. Aside from Orr, I would probably say Asham is my 2nd favorite fighter in today's NHL (granted he's not a heavyweight).
All-time I would have to go with Probert. Just so entertaining.
Placebo Effect 11-14-2009, 02:12 PM Gotta be Rypien right now.
Rugs by Resch 11-14-2009, 02:23 PM Cam Janssen by far. No way you couldnt love that guy.
Brassard Calder 11-14-2009, 02:58 PM how cant you not loved Rick Rypien, that guy is fearless!! the next PJ Stock
I like Rypien, he's a very entertaining fighter, but he's not the next PJ Stock. Stock fought heavyweight enforcers, Rypien doesn't. Big difference.
Epoch 11-14-2009, 03:05 PM Always been a big Orr fan, even before he signed with the Leafs.
Brassard Calder 11-14-2009, 03:13 PM Jon "Nasty" Mirasty

Steveorama 11-14-2009, 03:29 PM Rypien.
The guy does not just hang on, he throws hard and fast with both hands...only 170 lbs, fights guys MUCH bigger than him and I have not seen him lose one, yet.
Quickest hands in the league (fighting-wise at least) right now.

Steelhead16 11-14-2009, 10:58 PM Career cut short but Link Gaetz had something wrong in his head.
Current: Jeremy Yablonski. Can fight with either hand. Eats punches to get a good shot in. 6 time Canadian Golden Gloves Champ. 2-0 in MMA fights. Has fought his cousin (Jon Mirasty) several times in epic fights.
flames123 11-15-2009, 01:13 AM I like Brandon Prust because he agitator/fighter/scorer. I've seen him fight guys 6in taller than him (he's only 5 11'') and he does a great job of getting at the other players and he can score too.
Next in line: Rypien, he can take on anyone and even the heavy weights are scared of him.
Dylonus 11-15-2009, 01:17 AM anyone who faces Sean Avery.
Why? I want to see him get his ass kicked
NJDEVILS17* 11-15-2009, 03:06 AM Currently: Donald Brashear and Eric Godard

Mr. Canucklehead 11-15-2009, 02:00 PM I like Rypien, he's a very entertaining fighter, but he's not the next PJ Stock. Stock fought heavyweight enforcers, Rypien doesn't. Big difference.
I don't think Rypien's been challenged by a top heavyweight yet. His scraps are usually spur of the moment; that said, he usually does give up a significant size and weight disadvantage, which is where the Stock comparison comes from.
I would be interested to see how Rypien faired against some of the tougher names out there.
~Canucklehead~
MakoSlade 11-15-2009, 05:08 PM My favorite is Randy McKay by far. He had one hell of a fight card and could play the game as well. I remember him pounding Dave Brown like a tent stake, that is probably my favorite fight ever.
And someone mentioned Jay Miller earlier, he is probably one of the most under rated fighters of all time. Guy was tough as nails.
Currently Rypien, Orr, Bieksa
Avery4Byng* 11-15-2009, 06:25 PM Brad May - Guy never turns anyone down. Can throw with both hands, super entertaining.
Rick Rypien - Basically same thing, but smaller in stature.
Colton Orr - Under-appreciated heavyweight in my opinion.
My favorite is Randy McKay by far. He had one hell of a fight card and could play the game as well. I remember him pounding Dave Brown like a tent stake, that is probably my favorite fight ever.
And someone mentioned Jay Miller earlier, he is probably one of the most under rated fighters of all time. Guy was tough as nails.
The thing about Miller was that he would fight all night if they let him...he simply would not quit. He'd take a few early in the fight to set you up. Fun to watch.
Aaron Asham, he's great at countering and can make guys look silly. See here. Super Technical
GN9r0uwEWv0
Honorable Mention is Cam Jannsen. Looks funny when he fights but he uses his energy well and can throw a bomb with nice timing. Both of these guys I like because they seldom lose, they usually tie or win every bout.
GOB Bluth 11-15-2009, 10:55 PM I love the calmness of Aaron Asham as he is squaring off. I wouldn't want to fight a guy that looks like he just doesn't give a ****.
Moses Doughty 11-16-2009, 12:55 AM Stu Grimson
Ian Laparriere
Tie Domi
Milan Lucic
Emery(gets his props for going with Peters lol)
I hate Ivanans though, first Kings fighter I don't like.
PuttinOnTheFoil624 11-16-2009, 11:18 AM Clark Gillies
his fight against Dave Schultz and how he treated Hopspodar's jaw made me a fan for life.
iamjs 11-16-2009, 12:01 PM Career cut short but Link Gaetz had something wrong in his head.
not necessarily. His NHL career? Yes. His hockey career? No.
He played until 2005, primarily in the QPSHL/LNAH.
One of my favorite stories about him:
He last appeared playing with the Thetford Mines Prolab of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH) in 2004–05. On March 13, 2005, in a game against the Verdun Dragons, Gaetz did not take a shift during the first or second period. During the second intermission, Gaetz changed out of his jersey and skates and went out to the concession stand to buy a hamburger and "promptly ate it". Thetford Mines Prolab considered this disrespectful to the players, and suspended Gaetz for the remainder of the season.
Steelhead16 11-16-2009, 12:10 PM not necessarily. His NHL career? Yes. His hockey career? No.
He played until 2005, primarily in the QPSHL/LNAH.
One of my favorite stories about him:
He's a big guy and big guys gotta eat. I hadn't actually heard the burger story before. It's the tamest story I have ever heard about him. If I could write, he could make a pretty interesting book.
Not sure his non-NHL life would be called a career but you are correct he did fumble around hockey until a couple of years ago. Suspended from numerous teams and a couple of leagues.

One of my favorite stories about him:
http://www.geocities.com/linkgaetz23/legendoflink.htm
Hilarious article filled with great stories. Link Gaetz is quite a character. Great quote from Lou Nanne:
On draft day in 1988, Gaetz was picked in the second round by the Minnesota North Stars. He'd been in a bar fight the night before and showed up with two black eyes. "In the first round we drafted Mike Modano to protect the franchise," says Lou Nanne, then the general manager of the Stars. "In the second round we drafted Link to protect Mike. In the third we should've drafted a lawyer to protect Link."
Ohashi_Jouzu 11-16-2009, 12:21 PM Bob Probert for me. I'll always remember the 30 goal, 400 PIM Bob of '87/88.
Kmode 11-16-2009, 01:18 PM Rick Rypien is the best fighter in the NHL. He is small but will fight anyone, and everytime he fights it is an exciting bout. He has a boxing background and you can see it in how he fights. His left hand is amazingly quick and powerful and he beats on people twice his size (i.e Hal Gill and Zack Stortini).
Diagonaali 11-16-2009, 02:46 PM Boogaard enforces even when he is not on the ice. And even when he is not fighting it is fun to watch him look for those huge hits. He is my favorite not so much for the fighting skills, but for the pure power and size that he presents on the ice. Boogeyman moving full speed on the ice is a scary sight.
Chainshot 11-16-2009, 03:28 PM May, even after he blew out his shoulder throwing a punch at Ronnie Stern, he had a ton of one-punch wins in his prime. It didn't matter, he put guys out.
Clark, for being completely fearless, regardless of the consiquences.
His battles with Probert were awesome.

Quickest hands in the league (fighting-wise at least) right now.
He lost one to Doug Murray a couple years back. Rypien is my favourite fighter in the league, too.
hockeylover007 11-16-2009, 09:45 PM Belak, also his interviews are always funny, LUCIC is a beast though, and he can do more than just fight. Check out Lucic vs Neil on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRAs6H2hMHM
Biz Nasty 11-16-2009, 09:59 PM Paul "Biz Nasty" Bissonnette....not the biggest guy but will drop the gloves at any time...plus the story of him coming out for warmups wearing a WWE Title Belt while in the minors is hilarious.
Anonymous User 11-16-2009, 10:12 PM Rick Rypien because his jabs are lightning quick, and he takes on anyone. When he fought 6'6 Andy Sutton and won, that was incredible. :yo:
PavelBure10 11-16-2009, 10:19 PM Rick Rypien is currently my favorite fighter. His willingness, and wide open style of fighting make him one of the most entertaining fighters in the league. He is the most entertaining Canuck scrapper in quite sometime.
FlyersBug 11-17-2009, 02:36 AM All time- Rick Tocchet

buffalowing88 11-17-2009, 02:57 PM Brad May was the scariest player on a team with Rob Ray, Barnaby, and Boughner..That says a lot to me.

Not sure about the rules of former player privacy so I won't post the pic but a simple facebook search will show up on the first page.

Good to hear. I hope is well. I sat with him at a game in the Cow Palace after his accident. He was actually a really nice guy in that setting. Saw him play in Anchorage a few years back and he was big and scary looking. Nobody tried him that night. I would have loved to see his career last longer, he could play and had a cannon for a shot.
c-carp 11-20-2009, 03:30 PM All Time for me would be Bob Probert because to me he was simply the best, if you were going to build a hockey fighter you wouldnt need to look long just say him and you would be OK. Also a lot of people dont realise that he had a decent amount of talent and scored 29 goals in his best year to go along with his 398 PIM's and he made the All-Star team that year.
Currently it would be Colton Orr the kid is always willing and has a very big punch and can skate well enough to play. He is in the perfect situationin Toronto because Brian Burke loves tough hockey and will give him a chance to play.
Ohagen* 11-20-2009, 03:34 PM Ryan Carter of Anahiem Ducks.

Has fought his cousin (Jon Mirasty) several times in epic fights.I knew they were both from Meadow Lake, I didnt know that they were cousins. Yabo played his only Regular season NHL game with my Blues and chased Brashear around all night trying to get a fight. He did have a go with Todd Fedoruk that night.

He did pretty well against Fedoruk. He try numerous times to get Brashear but I guess he figured he needed to earn his stripes against Fedoruk. Both his MMA fights were here and he just crushed those guys. Apparently he is having back issues this year and he has only played a few games in Binghamton. A guy here bought his Blues jersey at a "game worn" site and gave it to him last year. Still a fan fav in Boise.

Not the best fighter but would take on all comers and would do something today's enforcers don't do, enforce. None of that staged fight crap. Knew exactly how to send a message and could play some damned good hockey as well. The Gainey, Carbo and Nilan line is still the best checking line I've ever seen and he was a very important part of it.
superhakan 11-28-2009, 02:07 AM Rypien is awesome but its hard to like him as a flames fan...

tocchet92 11-28-2009, 12:50 PM Shawn Thornton.
Blue collar guy who slogged it out for 10 years in the AHL before Brian Burke gave him a chance in Anaheim. He has proven to be a capable fourth liner who can throw down with anybody. He's a rags to riches underdog who often takes on and defeats HW much bigger than he is.
Here is Thornton pummeling Georges Laraque:

rynryn 11-30-2009, 09:03 AM Rypien is probably the most entertaining fighter to watch (in a fight). I enjoy watching boogaard skating around poking people, them talking smack and skating to the bench, then boogaard smirking. And as someone else said above it's fun to watch him barrel full speed into a corner looking to crush someone.
Everyone here says stuff like "Rypien isn't afraid to fight anyone" and the most hilarious of all the one about heavyweights being afraid of him...He has plenty of opportunity this year to fight Grats and Boogaard (hell, even Scott--Scott isn't that great of a fighter, Rypien shouldn't have any problem). Looking forward to watching it!
Oshie97 11-30-2009, 04:23 PM Gotta say Tony Twist. He was an absolute monster. Kelly Chase was fun to watch as well.
Meganuck* 11-30-2009, 04:54 PM Ryan Carter of Anahiem Ducks.

Wes McSnipes* 12-01-2009, 07:50 PM D.J. King. One of the better up-and-coming heavyweights in the NHL. He's exciting to watch because he loves to chuck 'em, and he barely ever loses. He's a very good enforcer.
Check out his latest scrap where he dropped Krys Barch.
Jason MacIsaac 12-08-2009, 11:58 PM I'm not much a fan of fighters in the NHL today. I liked Simon (early days) and Langdon.
all time: Chris knuckles Nilan
now: Laraque, Rypien and from the AHL and formerly of the LNAH Jon Mirasty. small, but one hell of a pitbull. anyone, anywhere, anytime.
vivianmb 12-10-2009, 03:34 AM all time ; Clark Gillies.
now; i can't seem to find one, because they are all LAME. gimme a guy who scores 20 goals AND fights.
sm0ka47 12-10-2009, 10:42 AM All time: Dave Brown and Paul Laus... Laus is probably the most underrated fighter of All-time.
Right now: Dan Carcillo

OT , but is the ice palace still open? believe it or not that place had probably the fastset ice i've ever skated on. and i've been around.
and i agree laus was one tough guy
Suter to MacInnis 12-10-2009, 05:08 PM Rypien for me currently,
Loved Sandy McCarthy in his early days.
Machinae 12-10-2009, 05:41 PM Wade Belak is my favourite fighter.
I loved Orr before he became a Leaf and now I love him more because he is one <3
scott4683 12-26-2009, 08:54 AM I liked Darren Langdon.. He was one of the best second half fighters ever i think. He is still playing today with the Deer Lake Redwings in the West Coast Senior Hockey League in Newfoundland. and he can still fight
Dennis Bonvie 12-26-2009, 09:34 AM Cote, Gratton, Lucic, Bonvie Mirasty, Rypien, annnnnnnnnnnd Carcillo!
Allll time probs Anglestad or Proby
There you go!
Bonvie was not only a fighter that would take on anyone, but he was also the greatest entertainer in hockey. He talked constantly to opponents, officials, teammates, fans. He always came out of the room last for warmups and the game and usually really late on the road so the fans weren't sure if he was dressed. And of course so he could get his chorus of boos with the spotlight completely on him. What a character.
Cairbre 12-26-2009, 11:38 AM Eric Godard.

And he always wears some ridiculous suit to the game as well.

Currently: Paul Bissonnette because he plays for my team, and he is absolutely hilarious.
All-time: Brad May and Rick Tocchet(my favorite player of all-time).
JCameron418 12-26-2009, 12:47 PM Hextall... wait does he count?
I also loved whenever Downie would fight when he was on the Flyers. I seem to remember watching a game when he was laughing in the face of the guy who was punching him. Crazy kid.
Right now, I love Rypien, and I've always admired Tootoo. Rypien, IMO, is so much more technical than what you usually see in a hockey fight. Tootoo is just a bad little ******* and he's not going to fight by any code, he's not going to fight you fair, he's dropping the gloves and has every intention of kicking your ass. You have to remember, the whole supposed purpose of fighting in the game is to motivate or deflate crowd, pump up your team, and change momentum. Nobody does that quite as well as a smaller, underdog type knocking the stuffing out of your supposed tough guy. PJ Stock, I think was one of the best at that. He was too small to be fighting real heavies and he did it with pure heart. I think Cam Janssen does a good job too, with his Hulk Hogan routine. Colton Orr was tough to see leave us. I always liked him. All time, I think Probert just played the villain role so well. I also loved watching John Kordic and Jay Miller fight each other. My all time favorite player is Wendel Clark, who was a nasty SOB. Oh yeah, I also loved Basil McRae. Once you got into it with that guy, he just kept coming back for more. And I've never seen a guy get punched in the face more and keep taking it than Riley Cote. Poor ******* is going to look like the elephant man by the time he retires.
I like a lot of the smaller fighters including Carcillo, Asham, Janssen, Rypien, Tootoo etc because the the fights are usually a lot more entertaining.
