DEVILS (32-13-1) at ISLANDERS (21-19-8)

Last 10 - New Jersey 6-4-0; New York 7-2-1

Season series - It's the third meeting of the season between the Atlantic Division rivals, but the first trip by the Devils to the Nassau Coliseum. New Jersey won both games at the PrudentialCenter, 2-1 on Nov. 6 and 6-1 on Nov. 28. The Devils will be back at the Coliseum on Saturday night.

Big story - The Devils complete a five-game road trip on which they've hit a couple of potholes. They're back East after consecutive losses in Phoenix and Dallas that followed a 1-0 shootout win over the Rangers in New York that saw Martin Brodeur stop a career-high 51 shots (plus four more in the shootout). In contrast, the Islanders are playing their best hockey in a couple of years. They've won five of their last six, including Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over Buffalo that was the first victory in more than a year for now-healthy goaltender Rick DiPietro. The Isles, last in the NHL in 2008-09, start the week holding down the last playoff spot in the East.

Team Scope:

Devils - New Jersey will be looking to get off to a better start that it did in the losses to the Coyotes and Avalanche. The Devils trailed 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes in both games and spent the rest of the contests playing catch-up.

"We didn't start the way we wanted," Brodeur said after making 25 saves against the Avalanche. "You don't want to spot a team like that two goals. That's two games in a row we did that."

Islanders - He's not likely to play today, but DiPietro showed Saturday that he may be ready to play a significant role for the Isles. After missing more than a year with a knee injury that required surgery and a lengthy rehab, then looking rusty in a 4-3 loss at Dallas on Jan. 8, DiPietro looked much improved in the win over the Sabres. He stopped 31 shots and was greatly improved in controlling rebounds.

Trent Hunter's goal in the eighth round of the shootout put the Islanders ahead, and the Coliseum erupted after Patrick Kaleta shot wide to give DiPietro his first win since Dec. 26, 2008.

"I was trying not to cry on the ice," DiPietro said. "That's the one thing I told myself. I wouldn't cry. It's an emotional time for me. It's been a long time coming, been a rough road. Just to get the win was amazing."

Who's hot - New Jersey center Travis Zajac is 4-3-7 in his last six games. … Isles forward Kyle Okposo had his four-game goal-scoring streak snapped on Saturday but is 4-1-5 in his last five games. Dwayne Roloson, the likely starter in goal for the Isles, has won his last four decisions and is coming off a 6-0 win over Detroit last Tuesday.

Injury report - The Devils will be without forward Patrik Elias, who was taken off the ice early in Saturday's game after a hard, clean check by Colorado's Ryan Wilson. He missed practice on Sunday and will be evaluated by team doctors this week. Forward David Clarkson (broken leg) and defenseman Paul Martin (broken arm) are on IR and likely won't return for a couple of weeks or more. Center Dainius Zubrus (broken kneecap) may start skating this week. He's missed nearly two months. … The Isles are still without forward Tim Jackman (broken orbital bone).

Stat pack - Though the Devils and Islanders have lived on different planets in terms of success over the last decade, the Nassau Coliseum hasn't been a fun place for New Jersey - they've won just twice in their last seven visits and were outscored 11-3 in their last two trips to Long Island last season. Lifetime, the franchise is 26-60-11-3 at the Coliseum. … Despite their mini-slump, the Devils are still 18-7-0 in their last 25 games.

Puck drop - The Devils are trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak since going 0-2-1 at Philadelphia, Nashville and Dallas in mid-November. They figure to miss Elias (26 points in 32 games), while the Islanders will try to match a season-high four-game winning streak and retain control of the last playoff spot in the East.

INSIDE SHOTS:
Ilya on the Island?

The New York Post reported Friday that the Islanders "may be in the market" for Ilya Kovalchuk if the Atlanta superstar is made available before the March 3 trade deadline.

GM Garth Snow declined to comment on the report, other than to say that the Islanders are "not deviating from our plan of building up from within, and we're not interested in breaking up our young core."

Led by young forwards John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, Matt Moulson and Josh Bailey, the Islanders have ridden an 8-2-1 stretch into the No. 8 playoff position in the Eastern Conference through Saturday. Their next game is a home match Monday against East-leading New Jersey.

Kovalchuk, a pending unrestricted free agent, has 28 goals in 41 appearances this season. Snow pulled off a big deadline trade in 2007, acquiring winger Ryan Smith from Edmonton for two prospects and a first-round draft pick.

ISLANDERS 3, SABRES 2 (SO): Rick DiPietro waited nearly 13 months between starts -- and chants of "DP, DP" -- at Nassau Coliseum. An eight-round shootout just added to the suspense. Making his second start since returning from a yearlong absence following multiple knee surgeries, DiPietro stopped 31 of 33 shots through overtime and five more in the shootout to earn the victory in his first home start since Dec. 26, 2008. Sean Bergenheim and John Tavares scored in regulation and Trent Hunter beat Ryan Miller for the game-winner in the shootout as the Isles improved to 5-1-0 in January.

"I was trying not to cry on the ice," the 28-year-old DiPietro said. "That's the one thing I told myself. I wouldn't cry. It's an emotional time for me. It's been a long time coming, been a rough road. Just to get the win was amazing."

NOTES & QUOTES:
• G Dwayne Roloson has kept the young Islanders afloat in the Eastern Conference hunt with an 18-7-6 record through Saturday, but other veterans believe the healthy return of 2008 All-Star Rick DiPietro only will enhance their playoff aspirations.

"It is a big deal," captain Doug Weight said. "You find a cornerstone of your franchise and you want him to be the focus. If it works out, it looks great. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

"Ricky, the last few years before the injuries, came into his own and proved he could play at a high level. Obviously, they have a huge stake in getting him back and keeping him healthy, and you've seen it in the way they've been careful with him. He's a key component around here and I expect him to do well."

• D Brendan Witt was placed on the injured list earlier this week because of what the team announced as a calf injury, but the veteran defenseman also reportedly had been playing with an undisclosed knee injury for weeks before the team made the decision to shut him down indefinitely.

Quote To Note:

"Always in the back of my mind I knew I'd be back to this point, sitting in front of (the media) after a big win. I am sure when I get a chance over the next couple of days to let it sink in I'll be pretty excited."
—Goalie Rick DiPietro after posting a 3-2 shootout win Saturday over Buffalo in his first NHL win since December 2008 because of multiple knee surgeries.

ROSTER REPORT:

Player Notes:

• G Rick DiPietro improved to 17-9 in shootouts in his career in a 3-2 win Saturday over Buffalo, his first home start and his first NHL victory since Dec. 26, 2008 following multiple knee surgeries.

• C John Tavares, the first overall pick in the 2009 draft, tied Matt Moulson for the team lead with 17 goals, despite scoring just for the second time in his last 17 appearances.

• LW Sean Bergenheim, making his second appearance since missing 16 games with a rib injury, scored for the first time since Nov. 27.

Medical Watch:

• RW Tim Jackman will be out until at least late January with a broken orbital bone suffered Dec. 31 in Ottawa, but surgery will not be required.

• D Radek Martinek suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Nov. 6 against New Jersey and will miss the remainder of the season.

• D Brendan Witt was placed on the injured list with a calf injury and is expected to be sidelined until late January.

INSIDE SHOTS:
The game in Denver on Saturday took a backseat to a major scare for the Devils.

Patrik Elias, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher after being knocked out by a high hit by Colorado's Ryan Wilson. Elias stayed on the ice for five minutes before leaving, and he waved to the crowd as he was taken off.

"I don't know exactly how he is," said Devils coach Jacques Lemaire said. "I do know he's not ready to play now."

X-rays and a CT scan taken at a Denver hospital showed nothing serious, and Elias was able to join the team on the bus for the trip to the airport.

There was no penalty called on the play, but Jersey defenseman Mark Fraser fought Wilson a little more than three minutes later.

But the Devils defended the hit, Lemaire saying, "When he was hit, he lifted up his shoulder. I think Patrik was a little careless."

The Devils did lose the game, their second straight defeat on a five-game road trip that ends Monday on Long Island against the Islanders.

It's the first two-game losing streak for New Jersey since a three-game skid Nov. 16-21 and only its two-game streak of the season.

AVALANCHE 3, DEVILS 1: Jacques Lemaire didn't like what he was seeing in the early stages of Saturday's game in Denver and called a quick timeout.

Things didn't get much better, and New Jersey has its first two-game losing streak in two months.

"We didn't start the way we wanted," said goalie Martin Brodeur. "You don't want to spot a team like that two goals. That's two games in a row we did that."

Rob Niedermayer scored the New Jersey goal as the Devils outshot the Avs 38-28, and had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds.

NOTES & QUOTES:
• The Devils lost three in a row from Nov. 16-21 and hadn't lost two straight until the trip stops at Phoenix and Colorado. They visit the Islanders Monday hoping to head off their second three-game losing streak of the season. This is the first time the Devils have lost two in a row in regulation since the first two games of the season.

• Colorado G Craig Anderson knew who was in the other net in Denver Saturday. "I don't have to shoot on him, but just being on the ice with a Hall of Famer, it's an honor to be playing against him," Anderson said of Martin Brodeur, who made his 25th straight start and appeared in his 32nd straight game. He and the Devils have lost two straight as Brodeur twice failed to get his 30th win, in 42 and then 43 starts, both of which would have been his quickest to 30.

• D Mark Fraser saw Patrik Elias carried out on a stretcher after a high (and clean, in the words of coach Jacques Lemaire) hit by Colorado defenseman Ryan Wilson, and fought Wilson soon after. "That's my role on this team," Fraser said. "It's unfortunate that at times you have to stick up for teammates when it's not just a big hit but an injury. I'll do that any chance I get for a teammate of mine." Said Lemaire: "That's good. Very good," he said. "No problem with that."

• The Devils are 4-5-1 against the Western Conference.

• New Jersey is 16-6-1 on the road, still the best mark in the NHL, but now just barely.

Quote To Note:

"Obviously, it was scary whenever anyone gets knocked out like that. It's very scary. If it's a clean hit, it's a clean hit. This is hockey. All I know is he got knocked out."
—Devils left wing Brian Rolston after teammate Patrik Elias was knocked unconscious by a Ryan Wilson hit Saturday.

ROSTER REPORT:

Player Notes:

• D Colin White, one of the real defensive defensemen in the league, was sent out to stand in front of the Colorado net on a power play with G Martin Brodeur pulled for an extra attacker. "Yeah. On the bench he yelled my name and said, 'Get in front,'" White said. "I just tried to stay in front and get on some loose pucks, help out wherever I could."

• C Rob Niedermayer scored his first goal in 12 games Saturday.

• C Rod Pelley got some power play time Saturday but still hasn't scored a goal in 10 games.

• RW Vladimir Zharkov still doesn't have a goal in 22 NHL games.

• RW Patrik Elias, C Dean McAmmond and RW Niclas Bergfors have all gone the last five games without a point.

• RW Ilkka Pikkarainen, LW Pierre-Luc Letourneau Leblond and D Matt Corrente were healthy scratches Saturday.

Medical Watch:

• RW Patrik Elias waved to the crowd as he was carried off on a stretcher Saturday in Denver. It appears he's OK. "We had X-rays here (at the Pepsi Center) for his neck and everything was fine. We went to the hospital just for precautionary reasons for a CT scan and everything is fine," said general manager Lou Lamoriello. "The doctor didn't know we were flying back after the game, so he said, 'I'd just like to double check with a CT scan.' So I went to the hospital with him and they got the report back. Everything is OK."

• C Dainius Zubrus, who suffered a broken kneecap Nov. 19, is skating and close to a return to practice.

• RW David Clarkson (leg) and D Paul Martin (arm) are both still two weeks away from getting back onto the ice.

• D Colin White missed some time Saturday after getting hit on the inside of his left knee by a Brian Rolston shot.

Great video.

I feel we only have a chance against the Devils when Ricky is net and wants to match marty save for save. This is not the case tomorrow afternoon so I predict a 3-1 loss. My only hope is that we at least show some life.

I will be a huge believer if we play well and still pull off a win tomorrow. The Devils imo are the ultimate streak buster for this team.

I am very wary of the Devils tomorrow, but I felt that way against the Sabres as well, we started Biron in both Prudential center games, so we have at least a different goaltender look, knowing the Isles I am more scared of the Thursday game (Panthers) then Monday & Saturday (NJ), Tuesday (Pitt) and Next Tuesday (Washington)

this is a big game. we need to start beating nj especially if we end up playing them in the playoffs. chances are if we make it, nj will be at the top and we'll be at the bottom. it could be a likely match up. i think our boys would feel a little more confident with a series split than a sweep

I agree with this post.

We haven't seen Roloson against the Devils this season, so I am intrigued to see how he will play. I am also interested in watching if the team continues to play as strong in front of him and if the Islanders can continue to play as strong as they have been the past few games. This is another big week for them, I hope they can string together more wins to this current streak.

I would expect them to come out hard tomorrow. The last 2 Devils games were pretty tight (until that Biron meltdown the 2nd time). They can get 4 in a row!

Put quite simply, this needs to be a win, end of story.

2 points out of 6th with games on hand.. at home vs. a team on a losing streak. It HAS to be a win, I don't really see how I can say anything other than that.

WITH THAT SAID, I think we fail really hard tomorrow. I don't know why I have this feeling, but this is how I feel about it. We have been awful in every afternoon game this season, and playing a lethargic game against the Devils is a NJD wet dream.

The Isles will need their A game.. anything other than their A game and, to put it simple, they don't stand a ****ing chance in this one.

We really need this Win, it would put us in a great position, unfortuantely the Devils have owned us lately..Who do you think will get the start? I have a feeling its going to be Roloson but a part of me thinks maybe they should go with DP and Roloson Tuesday in Pittsburgh..I say that cause DP used to always elevate his game when we played them and he's coming off a really big win for him and playing in front of another big crowd tomorrow behind him I think will help him, rather then make him go into Pittsburgh and face Crosby and Malkin..

I think you want a win but I don't see how this particular game needs to be one compared to say the other 3 games this week. Unless you will say the same thing about those games too? The problem is if you say it for every game it becomes a cliche.

(I am not trying to be a downer though so beat the Devils. That is always good )

as for our chances, as someone mentioned, biron plaed jersey both times but now with roloson its a different story. we have been on the rise and they have been struggling and recently lost elias. we can win.

"rick dipietro in goal! mild surprise?

I kind of assumed he would be. Save Roloson for the road trip, play DP at home in front of a nice crowd.

If it is Rick, I really hope he and the team can play as well as they did on Saturday, if not better. We know he loves playing Brodeur, so here's hoping for another win:handclap::handclap:

Yeah, I assumed he would get the start too. Still, IMO, not very smart by Gordon. You have a guy coming off a shutout, has not lost in his last EIGHT games in regulation.. and he has to sit in favor of Ricky.

It's pretty obvious what the Isles plans are with Ricky. Some can continue to doubt it, but DP will be the starter of this hockey team, if he isn't already.

I think not having Witts slow skating & bad decision making is the biggest difference with this team. They look faster & more fluid as a team without Witt.Thompson is serviceable, especially going against tougher teams like the Flyers. I wonder what a combo of Witt & Biron can bring back in a trade?

Ok... coming into this season I would not have lost a minute of sleep if we didn't make the playoffs. I fully expected to be a bottom 5 team again.

Now however? I will be GREATLY disappointed if this team misses the playoffs. There is no reason why we can't keep this up. They have done it for 50 games now. You can't fake it for 50 games.

let me guess...this is the devils' worst game this season too? :sarcasm:

Seriously...

I've heard that so often this season. Maybe it's possible, even slightly, that the Isles are forcing teams into bad games with the forecheck and pressure?

A couple more of these "The _______ didn't show up today you guys got lucky you got them on an off day" and maybe we'll get a little more respect.

Or... Just Keep Winning. Thats always good for respect.

I love the way your team plays, what a phenomenal effort today so far, it's great to see a young team like the Islanders come together and to see a long suffering fan base see things start to come to fruition. Do you find yourself breaking down the 3rd period by NYI goal leads?

ie. If the Isles are up by 4. I break it down to 5 minute sections hoping the opposing team doesn't score? If it's a 2 goal lead, then it's 10 minute halves?

I do it. Don't know why as it has no outcome on the game. By the end of it I'm normally standing 2 feet in front of my flat screen throwing hexes at the opponent's shootout shooter.

Isles, who looked like the slowest team in the league back in October/November, suddenly seem quicker to me over the last several games. They’ve seemingly found another gear, just as the season turns more serious. All of which is encouraging.

NJD was flat as a pancake. Like the Caps a couple weeks back on their west coast swing, and the Pens currently, it’s their turn to hit their January/February torpor. So it goes in a long, marathon season. Isles, to their credit, pounced. (Note: This observation takes nothing away from NYI, for those sensitive/confused about such things.)

I like the quiet (both on and off the ice), mature version of Rick Dipietro much more than the previous version.

Beyond that, will leave it to others to focus on individual players today. My observation about the team:

Isles are not giving up many quality scoring chances of late, and the puck simply is not spending much time in their zone. Any time you do not need to rely on your goalie to be a star of the game, you are playing great hockey.

Not coincidentally, they are scoring as well. Take care of the first, and the second will take care of itself, typically.

I am not in the business of allowing 12 games to over shadow the previous 37. I still think they will finish outside the top 8 as young teams tend to fade a bit the last 10-15 games of the season.

That said, they are playing terrific hockey, in all phases, and you can see that they have turned the proverbial corner. They are learning what it takes to win games at the NHL level...especially when you face the "brand name" teams in the league. Anytime you get that kind of effort from everyone on the roster, and add it to solid goaltending, you're going to win a lot more games then you lose.

Snow and Gordon deserve all the credit here after seeing this years edition of the Islanders already 20 points ahead of last years pace after 49 games. They took a lot of heat last summer, some of which was warranted, but have stayed the course and it's starting to pay off in spades...and it will only get better from here as these kids mature even further.

Great time to be an Islander fan boys and girls...

From the drop of the puck to the final whistle, that is exactly what this Islanders team brought forth today. A relentless attitude against the divisional leaders of the Atlantic.

Chants and claps to start the game from the Islanders crowd as Rick DiPietro made his second start in as many games, and third of the season. A test for the organization to see how his health holds up, which will come tomorrow, from two straight starts.

The Islanders started the game with amazing energy, building from the crowd.

They are winning a fair amount of face-offs. Really good looking attack right now. There always seems to be bodies in front of the net. Hard to find a bad performance this afternoon. In addition to everyone else playing well, it looks like Comeau could be a solid third liner. I thought he really tried to step up the physical play in third against Buffalo when they were coming back and thought he worked the puck down low pretty well today.

Being at the game it was so nice seeing a sellout. Even tough it was mostly kids, eventually these 13 year olds will grow up and will be buying tickets to the game.

As for the game the team looked great and the Devils looked outmatched. DP playing the puck helps hide our defense on some of those long dump-ins. Moulson in front of the net is always a positive.

This team is rolling right now, and is it a coincidence that Nate "PK" Thompson is out and the PK has been great. ;)

Not much to say, they played a flawless game. Guys like Gervais and Meyer are even playing much better. Bergenheim and Hunter did amazing work from what I saw on TV. They are 9-2-1 over 12, that is 19 out of 24 points, I think they can ride this crescent for a bit, I am a bit scared of the Olympic break slowing them down.

Thats it for me, too. I am so hard on this team, but I can't do anything other than enjoy whats going on right now. I just wish it could last until the playoffs. We won't keep this pace, but there's hope that we can keep a .600 percentage going if the guys keep playing for eachother and we receive the goaltending.

It's going to be how this team maximizes its low points from here on out. When we start to slide a little, we have to be sure to minimize it to two-three game segments where we snap out of it. That'll be the most telling stat of where this team is headed this season. A young group can get down and really tumble. We have to hope the character on this team allows for small lulls.

It's just a really good feeling to see this kind of hockey. You felt it today, the barn had a certain character to it. Something it hasn't felt since 2002. Just a certain feeling that the fans and players on that ice would represent the organization TOGETHER. This is a powerful group of fans we have. We may not have the most fans, but most of us can rock that place and get behind our team better than most of the fanbases in this league. We are finally able to get behind a team in almost ten years.

I hope.

They executed a smart game plan today against a stingy team and 'tender. Bodies in front and around net, shots through. Consistency.

No doubt the Devs were sluggish, but good teams take advantage of that; a month ago I'm not so sure the isles would have.

Moulson reminds me of Mike Knuble with his ordinary speed, good shot, and front-of-net instincts/presence.

I just wanted to come over here and say the Islanders are a good team with a bright future and the ass whooping they put on us today can't be denied. haha. Seriously, I normally get annoyed when the devs are getting stomped, but the Islanders played a phenomenal game, used their speed, drew penalties and made us look like an ECHL team.

I wish you guys the best of luck throughout the rest of the year (save the games vs us. lol) and hope you get into the playoffs. Again, great effort tonight. We didn't exactly show up to play, but a lot of that had to do with the Isles intensity throughout the course of the game..

Wow, yet another game missed and another shutout!

I missed the DET game too.

Ok, NOT gonna watch the Pitt game live tonight. Who knows, maybe the streak will continue.

Looks like the team played a fairly solid game. A shame the ref lost site of the puck on the early Park goal. Brodeur never had that puck secure.

Moulson with two more. Gotta give the man credit for continually being a threat and getting those goals within 5 feet of the net. The guy has been an absolutely WONDERFUL NHL story this year.

In adding him, Roloson, Biron and Tavares (and still being well aware of what Biron has done from a statistical standpoint) together, has any NHL team had as much combined success from its '09 summer additions as we have??? Depending on what Snow might still get for Biron, that addition may even increase.

Bad news of the night:
I guess the worst news of the day is that Matt Duchene has now taken over the league lead in rookie scoring. 15-18-33 to Tavares' 17-14-31.

Speaking of rookies, having seen all the little, solid things he does plus his guady 7-20-27 and +12 rating to date, Tyler Myers has got to be the frontrunner for the Calder Trophy at this rate.

Heard on 1010wins on the way into work today.

Jock Lemaire blaming his loss on "how tired his team is" and "the schedule"

LOL...first Detroit now the Devils. God I hate the devils.

Couldnt be a good game by the isles? Couldnt be the the NHL cellar dwellars are finally getting better?

****ers.

It's not like we all don't have similar schedules. Plus the Debbies played two less games. Maybe Lou should shut his trap and take the losses like a man. The Debbies are an awesome team, most teams go through slumps, it happens.

Yep, Tyler Myers has to be way in front.
