Well Michal = Michael..many names are just slavicized versions of common names...Jan/Ivan (John), Michal, Jiri or Juraj (George) Branko is generally a nickname for guys with the name Branislav or a shorter form of the name. Branislav means 'Protection Glory'... it's last names that tend to mean something or have some 'meaning' hidden.. like Nagy = Big (Hungarian) Orszagh = Country (Hungarian) Straka = Magpie (czech) Ego 04-29-2004, 02:15 PM In the case of Branko Radivojevic, Branko is not a nickname. It is regular name in Croatia where his roots are. But Golbez wrote it perfectly. Like Mexicans say Miguel, we say Michal and Americans say Michael. Brankogurl 10-22-2004, 10:16 AM So how does Slovakia pronounce Michal Handzus' name? Announcer's here never says foreign players names right. I don't know if their too lazy to even try or whatever. Also I never even heard of Branko Radivojevic [the name] until I went to an old Coyotes game back in the 2001-2002 season. Both [Handzus, Radivojevic] are pretty awesome names. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BrankoRadivojevicFanPage http://brankoradivojevic.cjb.net 12# Peter Bondra 10-22-2004, 11:53 AM IMO the american commentators pronounce Handzus as best as they can. nagamonster 10-22-2004, 05:40 PM I found the best way to find out how to say the players name is ask them, like I did michal , and branko while both still played for the coyotes. Branko has a special way he likes his name said. Hes A really a sweet guy. Looks like the coyotes have problems with the Slovak players, Nagy is last mane standing so far. Michal = MI-khal Handzuš = HAHN-dzoosh PS: American and Canadian commentators are extremely lazy in this area. They are passed around a list that Doc Emrick puts around of name pronounciations...and most of the Czecho-Slovak players (or any European player) are just plain wrong! That's probably because of the list, which is just awful. But it's not because of laziness. If a foreigner doesn't pronounce my name wrong, it's probably because my name is in a different language, not because the speaker is lazy. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to meet Branko and Michal! but anyway, something just reminded me,my last name had Slovak roots, and no one knows how to say it,it's so strange...I mean the name is Greek, but it originated in a Slovak area-as I was told.... I never had the courage to go up to a player at a Family Festival the Coyotes have every year and ask one of the Slovak players exactly how do you really pronounce your name. I would have thought Handzus was HAHN-dzoosh. Once I pronounced it like it's spelled Hand-zoos. But then someone from the games told me the correct way and now it's like officially programmed into my brain. But Branko's last name!! :help: Radivojevic!!! (I know how to say it now), I never knew how to say it, but after I saw him on a Slovak show doing an interview I finally realized it was different. Rock on DUDES! :yo: http://brankoradivojevic.cjb.net http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/BrankoRadivojevicFanPage Misha.cz 11-05-2004, 02:28 PM even game announcer in Vsetin has a problem to say Radivojevic - people are complaining to GM about it here - http://www.hc-vsetin.cz/otazky.asp?start=10&pocet=10&kat=stefl&ID=&typ=&od=A but anyway, he is definitely best forward in Vsetin nowadays! attis76 11-08-2004, 10:04 PM Michal = MI-khal Handzuš = HAHN-dzoosh PS: American and Canadian commentators are extremely lazy in this area.
