These statisticks are interesting. I knew hockey was popular in Switzerland ... that Bern was the first 9 years in a row in spite of the krisis hitting the number of people is impressive.

Where i am surprised is by Germany ... they have 15 teams in the DEL. Eisbaren Berlin have 14000, Adler Manheim 11000 and Kolner Haie 10000, if the leagues averages 5800 per game, what is left for the others ??
Actually Switzerland with Bern at 15700 and the average being at 6181 spread over 12 teams deserves the same question !!

Interesting ... sorry for some words that are in German. I didn't translate the ones that still appear understandable in English.

Some more teams in Germany have the potential for an average of more than 10000: Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Frankfurt. but they can't reach it (anymore) due to various different reasons.

In other places the fan-base is just significantly slimmer: For example Iserlohn, Kassel, Ingolstadt or Krefeld.

And then there is Wolfsburg whose fanbase is tiny.

Well, I hear Gernot Tripcke's voice saying: "The average attendance in the DEL has steadily risen over the last years". Yes, but we now have a three-class system: clubs with a high attendance (Berlin, Mannheim, Cologne), clubs with mediocre attendance (Frankfurt, Krefeld, Ingolstadt) and teams with low attendance (Wolfsburg). The problem is that in some cities the newly build arenas are greatly accepted, like in Berlin and Mannheim, but e.g. in Düsseldorf attendance steadily declines since they moved to their new place. Those new fancy arenas are expensive and thus a declining attendance leads to financial losses. If Iserlohn needs an average attendance of 1000 to earn money, Cologne or Düsseldorf need 5 or 6 or 7 times as much.

What is also impressive is the Croatian club, Medvescak Zagreb at 35. 5,843 fans is very impressive in a country that only has two or three serious clubs and maybe the same number of regluation ice rinks. I believe ice hockey is one of the few sports events in Croatia that you can drink alcohol and watch.

Yea, it's definately better to have a smaller arena if your team don't draw more than a few thousands. Like you said the atmosphere is terrible if the arena is half full, compared to if it's packed, even if the attendance is similar.

Basketball arenas generally hold much fewer people than hockey, in Finland and Sweden they don't play in the same arenas.

There's no interest for basketball in northern europe. Just like there's no interest for hockey in Spain.

But if there was basketball interest here, teams could easily play in bigger arenas. Trust me, basketball do not have arena problems in northern europe.

Hockey do on the other hand, especially in Denmark and Norway, usually playing in small, worn down, old arenas.

Another reason why hockey beats basketball in europe is that hockey is number 1 sport, or close to it in many european countries.
Basketball isn't, it's usually a middling sport, or at best, a very far second.

As we can see, it draws most people in Spain, but even there with almost 50 million people it only does the same numbers as hockey in Sweden, despite having 5 times bigger population.

Artemia

Another problem for basketball in europe is of course the competition from handball. Something basketball doesn't have in America for example.

Handball is quite similar and almost as popular. I don't think the fanbases cross much either.

Actually it draws 50% more people in the top league, but regardless, with your reasoning hockey is bigger in Austria than in Slovakia, while basketball is bigger in Finland than in Greece. We all know it's not.

Note that Russia also has 3 times Spain's population yet the Spanish top basketball league outdraws the KHL.

All in all hockey is not any bigger than basketball in Europe.

Uh, attendance wise, hockey is clearly bigger. And I'm sure if the numbers were total attendance and not the average for the leagues, hockey would come even further ahead.

KHL for example is 23 teams with 5.5K average.

Russian Superleague is just 11 teams with 2.2K average.

Hockey is the number 1 sport in just one country, a small one at that.

Yes, Finland. That doesn't mean hockey isn't very close to soccer popularity in other countries. It is in several countries.

Basketball on the other hand isn't even remotely close to soccer anywhere.

Unlikely seeing as basketball has a lot more leagues (i see you also conveniently disregard bb's Euroleague). Also Spain's top two bb leagues have 18 teams each, Italy, France or Germany also have many teams in their bb leagues.

Attendance does not tell the whole story though, far from that, as I showed above.

It is not close to football in "several countries", but even if it was, it does not follow that it is bigger than basketball. I mean cricket is also pretty big in two countries and it's still a tiny sport overall in Europe.

Euroleague is a champions league kind of tournament isn't it? Not reasonable to count that as hockey usually doesn't have one. But when hockey do I'm sure hockey gets similar numbers.

I only consider attendance numbers. And using that hockey beats basketball in europe by a large margin.

As for number of teams, sure there are more basketball teams. You only need like half or 1/3rd the number of players to make basketball team vs a hockey one.

But that doesn't mean many come to watch. Even Sweden has a 14 team basketball league. Hockey top division is just 12. But their second division has another 14 and draws big numbers also.

Just look at the attendance numbers. Hockey beats basketball easily in average numbers. Those are facts, not some numbers you or I pull out of our behinds.

Hockey has higher averages. More leagues above 1000 average etc.

And if total attendance numbers were used, basket would lose even more as hockey usually plays many more games in Europe.

Lithuania? Basket may be popular there but the numbers doesn't show it. Having a popular national team on tv isn't the same as a popular league.

Not to mention it's a tiny country, just 3 million people! You complain about Finland being a small country but bring up Lithuania as some basketball savior?

Also, why are you again downplaying hockey's popularity in European countries? It's close to soccer or even beating it in total attendance numbers in Sweden, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovakia, Finland, and Russia.

And a much closer second in the second tier countries than basketball ever is, like in Germany, Norway, Austria etc.

Where in Europe is basketball even close to soccer's total attendance numbers during a season?

Spain basketball is 2.1 million.
Spain soccer is 11 million.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_attendance_figures_at_domestic_professiona l_sports_leagues

BTW, KHL's total attendance per season is bigger than Russia's top soccer league.

Artemia

Here's the total attendance numbers for the top european hockey and basketball leagues.

Basketball.

Liga ACB Basketball Spain 2008-09 2,149,416

Lega Basket Serie A Basketball Italy 2008–09 926,910

Basketball Bundesliga Germany 2006-07 1,031,096

Russian Basketball Super League Russia 2008-09 317,021

Hell, I'll even give you the euroleague just to be nice.

Euroleague Basketball Europe 2009-10 1,238,980

It's missing France but seeing as that draws half the average of Spain, 1 million is realistic.

So the top 6 leagues, including Euroleague, total attendance is around 6.5 million.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_attendance_figures_at_domestic_professiona l_sports_leagues

For hockey it becomes.

Kontinental Hockey League 2008–09 3,885,000

Elitserien Ice hockey Sweden 2006-07 2,064,204

Deutsche Eishockey Liga Germany 2008–09 2,440,815

Czech Extraliga Ice hockey 2004-05 1,826,507

SM-liiga Ice hockey Finland 2006-07 1,677,494
Nationalliga A Ice hockey Switzerland 2004-05 1,450,591

= 13 million total attendance for top 6 european leagues.

So even without champions league to inflate numbers in hockey, hockey crushes basketball in total attendance. Pretty much double.

And it's not like some of the less popular leagues in other european countries will help basketball either. It keeps on losing to hockey in almost every country.

jekoh

This is getting ridiculous, now you basically argue a league is more popular because it plays more games. :shakehead

Lithuania? Basket may be popular there but the numbers doesn't show it.
Actually, they do. Using your own method, attendance figures show basketball to be more popular than football in Lithuania : http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attn/aveltu.htm

Attendance figures also show football to be 4 times as popular in Switzerland as it is in Serbia.

Such a great indicator.

Which goes to show how terrible an indicator it is.

Hockey has always been gate driven, just look at the NHL and NBA, total and average attendance are pretty close to each other, it's tv where the difference comes into play and basketball dominates.

There isn't much of a difference in Europe. Hockey has slightly better attendance than basketball and handball, but those two usually have better tv-ratings instead. Neither of those three has enough of an argument to be considered the no.2 teamsport in Europe.

Slightly better attendance than handball? I know handball is somewhat popular in Germany but even there it's almost 1 million behind hockey attendance according to the figures.

Sure, it probably has more casual appeal among tv viewers, national team especially, but people who actually pay and watch games are not so many.

It's like that with handball everywhere where it's supposedly "popular". Here in Norway it's also like that. It's popular on tv because we always win, especially women, but hardly anybody attend games, male or female.

Even here hockey has like 3 times more attendance than handball.

What is the second most popular handball league? I can't even find numbers for other leagues than Germany, but none are guaranteed even close to Germany's number. Which is still just 1.4 million total.

France perhaps? Denmark? If it is I'm pretty sure they don't even have half of Germany's numbers.

Hockey on the other hand has 6 european leagues with higher numbers than handball in Germany.

And those 6 leagues have 13 million per season. 6 top handball is probably not even 4 million.

So there's quite a difference.

13 million is pretty amazing actually considering NHL is "only" 21 million.

All of the european hockey leagues combined is probably quite close to NHL. Maybe just 5 million behind.

Continuing my last post, the numbers I could find for the ones below top 6 leagues are.

Austrian Hockey League Ice hockey 2008/09 907,740

Slovak Extraliga 2004-05 766,816

Elite Ice Hockey League Great Britain 2009-10 743,040

HockeyAllsvenskan Sweden 2006-07 679,156

AL-Bank Ligaen Denmark 2007-08 407,972

Get-Ligaen Norway 2005-06 329,768

Can't find numbers for Italy and France which are some of the bigger leagues missing, but I'm sure they're about the same as Norway/Denmark as their leagues have almost same average attendance.

So lets say 700K for them.

Some other strong 2nd leagues are:

11 2010 Switzerland NLB 2,196
12 2010 Germany Bundesliga 2,194
16 2010 Finland Mestis 1,234

Those three probably more than 1 million overall per season.

The rest like Poland, romania etc is probably less than 100K per season.

So overall in Europe around 18-19 million hockey attendance. Not bad. Some of these numbers are a bit old too, I doubt they're any worse today.

So just 2-3 million behind NHL overall. Then again USA/Canada have many other leagues drawing millions too, so for hockey in general they're far ahead.

Amazing that the KHL is so low.

Amazing that the KHL is so low.

Not at all... The KHL has 23 teams. Other leagues have half the amount. If you take the top 12 KHL teams attendance only, the figures would be much higher. Teams like Omsk, Ufa, Minsk, Khabarovsk, Yaroslavl rarely sell below capacity. Other teams like Riga, st. Petersburg, Mytischi, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk usually sell to 80% capacity in pretty big rinks. Other teams like Barys (getting new rink soon) and Nizhnekamsk sell to capacity but are limited to small rinks. Chekhov = failure of KHL, even sells to capacity on avg. night but is limited by small rink.
,,Basically if you drop the bottom teams from the avg attendance figure, KHL would be #1. Also, KHL has increased attendance in past few years.

Switzerland overtook Sweden. That's awesome.
Even the National League B (Swis minor league) has a regular season average of 2'114 spectators.

:yo:

Edit: My copy & past list sucks. Here's the link: http://www.iihf.com/home-of-hockey/news/news-singleview/article/swiss-nla-overtakes-sweden.html

the GB elite league seems to have dropped around 400 on average attendence. would it be fair to assume that 2 new teams being added to the league would have caused this?

Yes, if there have been no previous hockey team in theese areas you have to assume that the interest for hockey ispretty low. Even if there have been previous teams there, people wont start rooting for a completely new team in a flash.

If the teams achieve succes i would assume that it will increase in populatity since they will get media coverage and then... well you know, the whole deal.

But hockey cheat a little. At least in Norway, where they do not count the actual number of visitors in the arenas, but the number of tickets.
They reckon with all season ticketsholders, although not all are present.
So if it registered 1,500 spectators, it could still be only 7-800 which are actually in the arena.
Is it the case in other countries' leagues, too?

By the way, I did not know that it was still a basketball league in Norway?

It's entirely possible, although I was under the impression that Braehead was drawing fairly well.

Hull probably detracted from league average attendance this year. Remember, most folks thought the Stingrays were folding until Coventry's ownership took over the club and saved it in the eleventh hour. That's bound to have a negative effect on attendance, although it's not like they have much more attendance to lose.

Average attendance: 3'657

Hockey is just an enormous thing other there.

I think only dropping 400 per game average in the economics of last season was a success

This is just not true, The entire Sopraceneri region (population 150'000), which includes Bellinzona and Locarno, supports Ambrì rather than Lugano.
