All Time Finnish Draft Continued

Padawan
06-01-2004, 05:26 AM
It's time to give our All Time Finnish Draft a kiss of life. I will be managing this thread since sadly ZTH left these boards.

Each team will have 20 picks in total. That's two (2) goalies, six (6) defensman and twelve (12) forwards.

New things in this draft: I will be picking players to both Padawan's Team and ZTH's Suomen Öljyjätkät. I will not select for HC ASB. Everyone else may select for HC ASB if they are online and it's HC ASB's turn to select. As you may already know, HC ASB has some previous turns skipped. Until those picks have been made not any other teams picks are registered. So select for HC ASB's skipped pick first, please. I'll bet you'll know which team is yours so I will not post them unless you want to see them. Mainly because I can't remember all of them. Sorry about that.

If you are not happy on the position your player has been placed, please pm me and I will change it.

I see the new rule has been a MASSIVE success... no-one's bothered to pick for HC ASB :( :dunno:

I'll get us started then, I think HC ASB's biggest need is a goalie, so...

with their sixth round pick, HC ASB select Finnish Player of the Year (1970), three -time Finnish Allstar, Jääkiekkoleijona #70...mr. Antti Leppänen.

Someone please continue.. it's not very hard, you know

Like I said before, no new picks are registered until the HC ASB's skipped picks are done. Then the draft continues as planned.

And because the previous owner of HC ASB was from Hämeenlinna I think he would've drafted some local players too, so with his remaining picks he chooses Tony Virta and Hannu Toivonen

As of now the draft continues as it was planned. I've notified Princess that her turn is next.

Remeber, if you are online and HC ASB's has the next pick choose a player for that team.

I'm really happy that this draft is continued. :handclap:
Princess' Dream Team selects for the 11th round a young prospect that might be a big star in the future. Here's our next player, from TPS junior team... Lauri Korpikoski.

For the 12th round we will select also from TPS, a father figure for many of the younger TPS players...He played his first SM-Liiga match with the JYP HT Jyväskylä, center Joni Lius.

Since I am online and HC ASB is next then I'll choose for it. HC ASB is short for defenders so the next pick for it is... Marko Tuulola.

Pietarinkadun Painonvartijat are proud to select, the best fighter in SM-Liiga,

Toni Mäkiaho!

Toni's also a world champion from 1995, but his strenght is beating others up. This is an ability that our rather soft team (old and young) needs!

Toni has 400+ sm liiga games under the belt, and 1000+ pim's in the box.

who had shutout in his first NHL game against Anaheim Mighty Ducks...

who has played in World Championships in 2002 and 2004 plus olympics 2002 (3rd goalie)

Again a very underrated player outside Pori. A player with two Finnish championship gold medals plus some other medals. One Canada cup tournament, one olympic tournament and two world championship tounaments. Fast winger who retired too early, in age of 28, mr. Tapio Koskinen

No it's not jersey number. It's finnish Hall of Fame and the nuber behind this is the order. So if there's a player that is Jääkiekkoleijona #5 that means that he is the fifth player to receive such an honor to be included in the Finnish Hall of Fame.

With their 13th pick, Pietarinkadun Painonvartijat are proud to select, from Oulu,

Esa Pirnes

Esa was in amazing form in the 02-03 SM-Liiga finals scoring every single game winning goal for Tappara. Esa has also represented Espoo Blues, and is currently on the books of the LA Kings where he has ebstablished himself as a 4th line centre.
Esa has two impressive World Championship tournaments under his belt, and his ability to score game winners like he did for Tappara when it counted is something the Painonvartijat could not resist.

This player has for example World Championship Gold in 1995 and Olympic Bronze in 1998. He played one season in NHL with Ottawa Senators, also visited in a farm team that season. In Finnish SM-liiga he has played only in Jokerit, though he is originally from Espoo. He was captain (replacing injured Ville Peltonen) in 2002 when Jokerit won gold, and a member of the team also in 1994 and 1997, Antti Törmänen

He was selected as the best player for Team Finland in the 2000 WC's. Here's our next player... Jukka Hentunen.

Not sure of the 2nd game, but definately Pirnes scored game-winners in games 1 and 3, both in overtime. Second game was not that tight, maybe 3-0. Bissett could have scored GWG and Pirnes maybe 2nd goal for Tappara.

After experience, I felt it's time to have younger player in the roster.

He was voted as a 2nd best defenseman last year in SM-liiga, after Marko Tuulola. He won also +/- statistic.

Last year he was captain of Kärpät, Oulu and for this year he signed with Chicago Blackhawks. He spent most of his season in minors though.

Surely you don't need to be a nerd to be able to do that..

Anyway, for those who don't know about it, you just press CTRL and F at the same time to activate the find function. Then type the player's name in the box and press enter (or click find next). You can also activate the find function by clicking Edit and then Find (on this page). It will save you from having to read thru the long list of selected players plus it will save time for everyone when you don't have to change the the player you select after you notice he's already taken.

The Mansester Broilers' 15th pick is a forward who was selected 95th overall by the California Seals in 1976, but never played a single game in the NHL. He did however have a very successful career in Finland and is currently 10th in the all time scoring list with 252 goals and 554 points in only 432 games played. He was the best goalscorer (36 goals in 36 games) and an All Star in 1976 and played for Finland in several international tournaments, including a Canada Cup in 1976. He made a short comeback in 1998 at the age of 42 and scored two points in the only game he played. A very warm welcome to the team, mr Jouni Rinne. The Broilers' 16th pick is another Tappara legend, a forward that scored 212 goals and 367 points in 336 games in 10 seasons in Finland. In all those years he played, he compiled a total of 24 PIMs. Not surprisingly, he took home the Gentleman Player of the Year Award twice ('76, '78), and was a member of the All Star team in 1977, when he scored 35 goals and 63 points in 36 games. He was also a member of Finland's World Championship squad the same year, scoring seven goals and an assist in 10 games played. His other accomplishments include winning the Rookie of the Year Award in 1973. In the Broilers team he shall be reunited with his long-time linemates Martti Jarkko and Mikko Leinonen in the second line. Welcome to the team, mr Jukka Alkula.

Indeed he was versatile, though the amount of games played in the league during the 1940s was incredibly low. But in 1945-46 for instance he scored 19 goals and 21 points in just 8 games. And it seems that even as a defenseman, his goals/assists ratio was pretty much the same... :amazed:

The Broilers, after extremely hard consideration, and thinking it through about a dozen times (and finally flipping a coin), select as their back up goalie, one of the very few Finns to have his name mentioned in the NHL record books. He was Rookie of the Year in Finland in 1975, and won the best goalie Award in Finland in 1986 and was in the All Star line-up the same year. He played nine seasons in North America (WHA, NHL, CHL, AHL), and played 91 games in the NHL. He also played for Finland in two Canada Cups and some other tournaments. I waited for Raimo to pick but because he has disappeared ;) I will make my pick (does not matter much because this is the last round)

Ulvilan punasiivet has a tough choice between two goalkeepers. Both of them have been on a championship team and like the most players of the team played for Ässät. The tiny factor which is decisive is that he has played all his career in Ässät. He has also coached ice hockey, rink bandy and ringette teams (Luki ringette just won this season championship with him). He is a member of Pori city council, mr. Antero Kivelä

Final pick time... This one was a hard choice between youth & potential and experience & accomplishments. I decided to follow my main theme with this team: Youth and potential.

So, Team Padawan's next pick is a younger gentleman from my birth place Kotka, Finland. This young forward was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 8th round, 260 overall in the 2003 entry draft. He has tremendous potential and is very fast and very skillful player. He isn't afraid of physical play but also has natural scoring ability. He is one of future's names in the finnish hockey scene along with Tukonen and Korpikoski although he is a little bit older.

Here he is, Team Padawan's final pick of the draft....
Ossi Louhivaara

This makes Team Padawan looking like this:

Ville Peltonen - Sean Bergenheim - Jarkko Varvio
Timo Pärssinen - Tommi Santala - Kimmo Kuhta
Juha Lind - Lasse Pirjetä - Ossi Louhivaara
Ville Nieminen - Riku Hahl - Marko Tuomainen

Petteri Nummelin - Jere Karalahti
Kimmo Timonen - Ossi Väänänen
Erkka Leppänen - Jyri Marttinen

Kari Lehtonen
Jukka Tammi

With their final pick, Kiekko-Vantaa will complete their first line by selecting a defensive-minded forward who's played 157 games in the NHL:

left wing Mika Alatalo.

That's it boys and girls, the draft is over. Only Pietarinkadun Painonvartijat has one previously skipped pick left but I'm going to wait a while. Let's say monday 3 pm finnish time. If that pick isn't used by then, I'm going to pick it and then I will start another topic with the poll in it to discuss the teams. All hfboards posters are welcome to share their thoughts about the teams. In the mean time, while we wait for Pietarinkadun Painonvartijat to make their final pick, would you please send me your line-ups via pm so I can make the discussion/poll thread's first post. (I will post all teams in the first post so it would be easier to vote the best team.)

It was nice drafting with you guys. Many thanks goes the ZeroTheHero who planned this draft and originally started it. Also I want to thank ES who helped this draft by picking many times for HC ASB's.

To all of participants of All Time Finnish Draft, this one's for you: :handclap:

My final team is here. I changed Ojanen to wing as I think he should be other than 4th liner.

Tamminen-Oksanen-Lehtinen
Riihijärvi-Jalo-Järvenpää
Ojanen-Forss-Arbelius
Lehterä-Krykov-Kapanen

Numminen-Eloranta
Lehtonen-Kukkonen
Mesikämmen-Alanko

Raimo Summanen - Jari Kurri - Matti Hagman

Shouldn't that be Summanen-Hagman-Kurri? Kurri spent most of his career on the right wing and Hagman was a center and a playmaker with an unequalled vision.

In any case, that's one scary first line!

I list my full team also here, the I pm:ed it already to Padawan but here it is anyway...

Makkonen - Ketola - Javanainen
Marjamäki - Ruuttu - Koskinen
Honkanen - Raitanen - Korpisalo
J. Torkki - Sahlstedt - Villa

Levo - Nikander
Rontti - Kaski
Niskala - Kuusisto

Takko
Kivelä

coaches: Lasse Heikkilä and Ismo Läntinen
spares: Tommi Rajamäki (D), Jari Levonen (F)
honorary mention: Sari Fisk (F)

Added two guys and a girl ;), because in Finland we have 22 players maximum. Fisk has got the honorary mention because she is the most successed Pori-born player.

A very nice team :handclap: One little note, though ;)

This is only my extremely biased opinion, but I think you're wasting your best talents putting your best center in the very unnatural post of LW, and at the same time using your 2nd best RW as first line center. I'm very biased, but that doesn't seem to make much sense when you're pretty stacked on C. :)

************************************************** ******

Here's my team one more time:

Tomi Kallio-Olli Jokinen-Teemu Selänne
Jukka Alkula-Martti Jarkko-Mikko Leinonen
Timo Susi-Pertti Koivulahti-Yrjö Hakala
Jouni Rinne-Esa Keskinen-Reijo Leppänen

Janne Laukkanen-Jyrki Lumme
Pekka Laksola-Pekka Marjamäki
Aki-Petteri Berg-Lasse Litma

Miikka Kiprusoff
Markus Mattsson

My final team:

Aarne Honkavaara - Jari Lindroos - Matti Keinonen
Seppo Ahokainen - Teppo Rastio - Kari Jalonen
Jorma Vehmanen - Toni Sihvonen - Pekka Järvelä
Mika Kortelainen - Petri Pakaslahti - Anssi Melametsä

Reijo Ruotsalainen - Pekka Rautakallio
Heikki Riihiranta - Timo Jutila
Waltteri Immonen - Jarmo Wasama

Jorma Valtonen
Unto Wiitala

I am pretty happy with my team, great goaltending and defence (expecially first d-man pairing) Attack is decent because of centers

With only 200 players there surely are some who are left out. Another example is Kimmo Rintanen who has played in huge lot of international games (no time to check the stats)

I think that best player left out was Ilpo Koskela, first ever World Championship all-star member from Finland

Didn't Sampe pick him at some point?

Edit: He did actually, in the 13th round
2.Kiekko-Vantaa D Ilpo Koskela

I think there were some very nice goalies that I was surprised no one picked, for example Hurme and Noronen.

No one picked Pasi Nurminen. :amazed:

Marko Kiprusoff was only 1995 World Champion who wasn't picked.

Maybe I must fix the team a little:

Tamminen-Jalo-Lehtinen
Riihijärvi-Ojanen-Oksanen
Järvenpää-Forss-Arbelius
Lehterä-Krykov-Kapanen

Nurminen was a surprise to me that he wasn't picked. Kiprusoff wasn't, and I think most of us knows why ;)

Hurme, Noronen, Nurminen, Lehto, Paavola not picked. What it shows... We have a helluva level in goaltending.

Gotta agree on Nurminen - the biggest surprise in the draft IMO - but c'mon...Marko Kiprusoff has had a very fine career. He was extremely reliable in his first three international tournaments and actually led all defensemen in points in the '94 Olympics. He's played in nearly 200 games for Finland. There were many defensemen in this draft whose careers don't compare to Kiprusoff's.

Much better :D

Totally forgot about Nurminen. :banghead: I would have taken him in the last round but I must have thought he had gone ages ago for some reason. :dunno: I agree on Kiprusoff too, there where quite a few lesser dmen picked.
