Chicago Cubs:

- Carlos Zambrano was given a 5-game suspension for intentionally throwing at Jim Edmonds twice during his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

- LaTroy Hawkins was given a 3-game suspension for inappropriate comments and actions toward the umpire after giving up a home run to Albert Pujols in the 9th inning of the Cards/Cubs game on Tuesday.

No word on whether or not they will appeal.

The suspensions are all justified and I doubt an appeal will make any difference.

What I thought was ridiculous was in a game between Boston and Anaheim, Lackey threw at a Red Sox player. Both benches were warned.

Then, after that, Schilling threw at an Angel (Bengie Molina) and wasn't kicked out of the game. Scoscia argued and he was ejected. Don't understand that. :dunno:

They usually drop a game with an appeal and the players still get to play untiul the appeal is heard.

For Ortiz, it will mean he can play this weekend. I agree about the justification. Watching the tandrum he threw - regardless of what happened during his "discussion" with the home plate umpire - was embarrassing.

I agree, but that is MLB rules. The umpires can't warn just one bench, they have to warn both. The next pitcher to hit a batter is tossed along with his manager.

I don't agree with it. It leaves the umpires powerless in such a situation....in terms of judgment.

I thought 5 games was light for Ortiz. Throwing bats at umpires, no matter the situation, should be punished with a hell of a lot more than a slap on the wrist.

I also don't like MLB's appeal system. The only reason Ortiz is appealing is so the Red Sox can use him against the Yankees this weekend. I'll put money down that the morning after the series with New York, Boston drops the appeal.

MLB needs to use judgment on which suspensions can be appealed. Throwing bats at umpires should not be a suspension that can be appealed.

After Ortiz getting into the brawl against the Yankees today, I hope MLB ups his suspension to 10 games.
