Report: PS4 in 2012 With Built-In Motion Control
Rumour emerges from Taiwan (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/118/1180451p1.html)

As reported by Digitimes, a Taiwanese manufacturer has claimed that a PlayStation 4 is on track for release in 2012, and that it will feature "body movement-based control like Kinect".

The source indicated that manufacturing duties will fall to Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, the company that made the PS3, with a minimum of 20 million units planned to ship in 2012.

The report comes after weeks of speculation that the next Xbox will also be released next year, after being unveiled at E3 2012.

We're not remotely convinced by this, partly because it flies right in the face of Sony's much-publicised ten-year strategy for the PlayStation 3, and partly because Sony execs like Jack Tretton have been so very vocal about how un-bothered they are by Kinect and Wii U. A 2012 PS3 successor would be more than a little premature.

It wouldn't be the first time that Sony contradicted itself, though, would it?

lol @ minimum 20 million units.

But yeah that would be awesome. With Kinect, Move, and Vita, it could do everything.

Do you think that the next gen PlayStation will have backwards compatibility?

I'm just wondering whether I should get back into gaming now? (I had a 360 until 6 months ago, RROD) buy a PS3? Or wait until "next gen"

Newer consoles usually aren't worth it until 2-3 years after launch, by then they're half the price and have a good library of games.

If I were you I'd just buy a PS3 now.

Unless there is some huge technological leap that Sony plans to unveil the PS4 will basically be PS3 v2.0. There was a big leap from the PS2 to the PS3 with games going from dvd to blu ray. The amount of detail you could fit on a blu ray disc is huge hence the jump in graphics. The PS4 as of right now doesn't have that a huge jump in tech that warrents replacing the PS3. I could see Sony going disc less though and distributing everything via the PS store. They could make the console a bit cheaper by removing the Blu Ray drive therefore increasing market share.

I'd be completely shocked if the PS4 came out in 2012. There are always a bunch of bogus reports coming out of a variety of sources.

As stated in other threads, with the emergence of Steam I may skip out on this generation of consoles all together. Uncharted is the only game that could make me want to buy a PS4.

Don't think I'd part with my PS3 unless it turns out that all my friends go out and buy a PS4. Don't really care for motion control, and if I want it it's a 100 dollar addition, no need to buy a whole new machine.

Both Microsoft and Sony have been tight-lipped on a new console, nobody knows. I can see Microsoft trying to get one out before Sony, to get a head start on game development, it is what they did last time. Sony took the biggest hit financially with the rollout of the last console, they were pushing the expensive Blu-Ray format and the PS3 was a loss leader in promoting that new technology at the beginning. They also kept the PS2 going in parallel. So I figure they would be quite content in making the PS3 last as long as possible. A new PS3 would probably only come out as a competitive reaction to Microsoft coming out with a new console on their side. I have no idea what Microsoft is planning secretly. Apple has always been touted as having a possible strategy for a game console, and lately there has been talk of Google plotting the same. Although their recent hiring of game people on their 'secret program' might be more to develop online games to compete with Facebook and Zynga.

If it is built into the actual console, does that mean you have to awkwardly place your console in the center of your room or something so the camera could see everything it needs to see...?

I'll buy one...after 2 price drops. So, 2014 sounds about right.

No. You don't champion the best aspect of your console for years and then abandon it. The PS3 is largely part of the reason Blu Ray won out. And games don't take advantage of Blu Ray because the Xbox doesn't have one. There's no point in developing 2 radically different games for 2 consoles. They simply port over the lowest common denominator to the PS3 and PC.

Sony needs to turn their PR around and come out with something new. Something exciting. A new PlayStation is just that. I think all the negativity and competition is getting to them and they realize they need something for consumers to be excited about. They also want to get the jump on MS.

Yeah... Sony is just mentioning now that they might start production on PS4 around Christmas... If you think a year tops gives them enough time to produce a PS4, you have a lot to learn about the world of computers.

It won't be until sometime late 2013 IMO

If it's basically going to be a PS3 with built in motion controls I know for sure I won't be wasting my money on that crap.

The ps3 is a big reason blu ray beat hd dvd but the future is digital distribution. I'm sure Sony sees the Steam model and would like to go in that direction for a number of reasons and one of them is the used game market. If everything is digital they'll no longer lose money to used game sales and that's one thing the major studies are looking to cut down on.

Fake.

The 20 million units assertion is utterly ridiculous. A console doesn't sell through that world-wide in a year, and mass producing like that is virtually impossible.

Also, it's just as impossible to launch a system with adequate power right now. You can't put any of these modern power hungry cards into a box on a 200W PSU and that makes it cost prohibitive and hard to cool. It'd be a Wii U half step at best.

I just hope this is not true. Motion control games are usually fun in the first hours you play, but they become extremely boring. If they want to make something Kinect-like, good for them, but I'd prefer going with a Wii U that looks to be, at least, innovating. A console with normal controls is way better than that, to be honest. I don't know how these type of games are getting so popular. The Wii was okay, it was innovating and such, but there's a lack of good games aside from Mario Galaxy, Zelda, etc. If you want to do this, Sony, just make another camera that will act like kinect for the PS3 and don't go in that ********. Anyways, I tried the Kinect and it's just not right : You have no feeling of the game contrary to PS Move or the Wiimote...
