WickedWrister 07-18-2011, 03:17 PM According to a study of over 300 adults, on average men cry once every month; women cry at least five times per month,[2] especially before and during the menstrual cycle when crying can increase up to five times the normal rate, often without obvious reasons (such as depression or sadness).[11]
According to the German Society of Ophthalmology, which has collated different scientific studies on crying, women cry on average between 30 and 64 times a year, and men cry on average between 9 and 19 times per year.
Men tend to cry for between two and four minutes, and women cry for about six minutes. Crying turns into sobbing for women in 65% of cases, compared to just 6% for men.[12]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crying
I saw this question on reddit and decided to pose it here. Does anyone else find this number extremely high? Once a month for men?
I mean, there are obviously situations where crying is appropriate. Death, emotional pain etc... I consider myself a pretty level headed person, but I can't honestly remember the last time I cried, not even at funerals. Some men just don't cry I guess.
I'd like to make a poll but can't. If a moderator could add some options, it would be much appreciated.

rumrokh 07-18-2011, 03:37 PM I don't cry at all at funerals and stuff like that. Or pain. For some reason, even some pretty bad physical pain has never brought me to tears. If someone incredibly close to me died, I'm pretty sure I'd cry, but I'd probably be more beside myself than a mess.
Some movies and books are tearjerkers for me, though. So it depends on how much media I'm consuming and what type. Never anything sappy that's designed to pull your heartstrings, but, rather, things that are legitimately poignant (sad is optional).
Could be multiple times in a short period and then not again for several months. On average, though, once every couple of months.
I definitely think I'm quicker to tear up than most guys I know. But it is a little weird that I feel more inclined to cry due to media than something that's happened to me. Stoicism, but sensitivity to art. I'm an enigma wrapped in a riddle!

Yea, sobbing or crying for a duration/beyond just "moist eyes" that might pour over has to be from depression or something major.
Maybe that means everybody here has boring lives. "I don't always cry, but when I do, it's because I won the heart of a princess in a bareback lion race."

Onions.

Icewind Dale 07-18-2011, 05:56 PM Tears contain stress hormones, which means you're only hurting yourself by suppressing those emotions. It's evolution's way of relieving your body of harmful chemicals. It's also why you feel better after you get it out of your system. Glucocorticoids do a lot of damage to your system over the long term.
If you're willingly keeping that crap in your body, you're only doing yourself a major disservice. Somewhat understandable in public given society's general ignorance of the matter, but in private? No excuse.
I don't normally cry too often, but I've been quite a mess recently. If you've noticed my posts in the past, you'll know I can be a real ass at times. Very argumentative. Therapy has helped bring emotions to the surface, and I've probably never been as emotionally healthy in my life. Or as respectful to others.

Perhaps, but I'd imagine you aren't physiologically different than the majority of the species. Whether you feel it or not is not an indicator of suppression. Or lack thereof.
It's socially unacceptable for men to cry in many cultures, and we're taught this from a young age.

So Icewind Dale, how often do you cry?
buddahsmoka1 07-18-2011, 06:26 PM I cry actually fairly often. I have no qualms or embarrassment from crying, and am not afraid to show my sensitivity.
Weird things make me cry though, not usually intense or traumatic situations, usually keep a clear head during those times.
Movies, books, emotionally moving pictures, deep thoughts, leaving my girlfriend, thinking about family issues, ect.
I think the last time I cried was watching some guy trying to stop rioters from breaking things and get gang beaten by them during the Vancouver riots. Struck a cord of anger.

Of course, I think the mace and pepper spray might have a role in that...
octopi 07-18-2011, 06:48 PM I asked this exact thing about 2 years ago here, based on the same poll/study.
My premise was I doubted most people cried that much and that Mark messier must be horribly skewing the odds.Depends on what they count as crying, i guess. A tear of sadness wells up, but you blink it back, does that count?
As to how often? I couldn't honestly say? for about 5 years, very rarely. Then for 1 year, almost daily(in private, someone I cared for died). I refuse to cry in front of anyone if it is a feasible choice.
The weird thing is, i can be a little turned on if I see a man doing it (also rarely...usually on a video feed or TV) If not turned on I guess perversely fascinated...I dunno how to explain it.
I last cried when I was 13 years old. We'll see how I hold up if a member of my immediate family dies. Aside from that, I don't see what it would take to make me cry.

Krishna 07-19-2011, 06:17 AM Probably less than once a year.. I think the last time I really cried was about two years ago.
Was this survey taken by a bunch of starving kids in Africa or something?
I got extremely sad the last time I saw that Futurama episode with the seven-leaf clover, but I didn't cry. Kind of OT, but Futurama is the best cartoon ever, IMO. South Park is definitely the funniest, but Futurama is an all-around better show.
ix I saw that ninja edit. I was about to ask you what you were talking about saying Stepan missed an open net.
I honestly dont find south park that funny :dunno:
HisIceness 07-19-2011, 08:03 AM The dolphins make me cry.

ixcuincle 07-19-2011, 11:15 AM SP being listed as "not funny" is def. a reason to cry. Why would anyone think that
v-man 07-19-2011, 11:34 AM I haven't cried since my uncle's funeral 18 years ago (I'm assuming we're not talking about tearing up when eating hot wings or when something gets in your eye). My brother on the other hand is pretty emotional and cries about three or four times a year.
Unaffiliated 07-19-2011, 12:42 PM I cried like a little girl the first time I saw the ending.
Spoiler, do not read unless you have seen the movie.
The farewell to the workers, or the present day Schindler Jews rocks on the grave?
The "I could have saved one more person" got me so hard. Made me feel like a rotten, spoiled layabout compared to him.
xa123 07-19-2011, 01:31 PM Last time I cried was when the Penguins won the cup, in all my drunken glory. I also called my parents in tears. The moment Crosby lifted the cup was the moment it all just came out. It wasn't just the fact that the Pens won that upsetted me, it seemed like all of a sudden my whole life was a failure.
Stupid Fleury making that save at the end
Epictetus 07-19-2011, 01:46 PM I've tried to cry numerous times, it just fails.

ROFL.
Swedish Puck Mafia 07-20-2011, 02:45 PM I had a decent cry the other night. I legitimately wanted to cry, but I just couldn't get started, so I had to watch the ending to Rudy, the ending to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and the beginning of Up to will myself into crying.

Dale, mate, are you still mad at me ?
Seriously man, I really didn't mean to offend you.
I apologize.
Gotta Catch Em Staal 07-20-2011, 06:11 PM You didn't "offend" me, you just proved yourself to be an untrustworthy slimeball by instantly taking something told to you in confidence and relaying it to someone else in an attempt to damage me.
