Gaborik was 18...Granlund will be 20. And Granlund's going to have MUCH higher quality linemates.

I don't think 50 points is out of reach for Granlund.

Something to think about, last year Skinner has 31G + 32A = 63 Pts. Skinner did that when he was 19. Granlund will be 20. 50 would be a big upgrade, and maybe we'll win a few more shootouts with his sick moves :P

Does that mean you fold? Bam! Winner!

Yes, I fold.

To be serious, I am happy with 40 points. You expect too much from him and will de disappointed.

Anyways, Granlund got two assists on PP tonight and leads FEL scoring now (6 + 12). So, he will wear that ridiculous golden helmet again in the next match. Way to go.

I'm expecting +55 rookie season from Mikael. Yes that is much but I rather believe he is going to make impact than not. Am I the next homer?;)

Read his post again. He didn't say it with sarcasm.

What was that D doing there?! Nothing away from Granlund but once again bad play by the opposite defenseman. And nice pass, anyhow.

BTW. What bugs me a little in MG's amazing passes is that I have NEVER seen him giving a really good sound and proper saucer pass! Never. And I mean by that a pass that makes the puck fly like a saucer, as supposed, not like some unsteady butterfly. He gives dubious butterfly passes, not solid saucer passes as they are supposed to be given! It's weird but true. Period.

Went to watch the game today and boy was I ever impressed with Granlund. That pass was a thing of beauty but even more impressive was his tenacity and defensive game. In my mind, he was the best defensive forward for HIFK while also being their most dangerous player in the offensive zone. He makes so many right decisions on the ice.

If that's your next counter-argument to why Granlund is bound to fail you are digging yourself an even bigger hole. Oh if only Mikael saucers didnt flutter! Then he would be a star!!

Seriously, dudes a good prospect. You don't need to just hate on him for no reason other than to be an antagonist.

Why is Granlund's CEILING only a 50-60 point player like you say...? I mean sure. Maybe he becomes that in the NHL, but their is no way you can say he WON'T become more than that.

I know. Also, a lot of his goals just go into the net, not off of the post and into the net. It's really frustrating, not hearing that awesome *ting* sound every time he scores. I don't see him having a future in the NHL until he can do it regularly. What a wasted pick...

If you want to know what really really annoys me about Granlund. It's the fact that he's already 20 years old playing against grown men in a league that's basically the
2nd best or close to the 2nd best in the world. I hate the fact that he's almost average 2 points a game and leading his team. As a 20 year old? I mean he's not even in his teens anymore. Plus, his passes flutter sometimes before finding the tape of his teammates. It's like WTH Mikael?

He's a bust in the NHL for sure. Kids got no talent. 40-50 point player ceiling. He's proven that so far in his hockey career.

I was about to say pretty much the same thing. I have no doubts about Mikael fitting in the NHL. With those talents it is just impossible to fail, since the footspeed is seriously well above average, hockey IQ is the best I´ve ever seen and the guy makes right plays all the time, with the puck or without.

Former NHLer Jarkko Ruutu got a game misconduct for charging Mikael Granlund at the last minute of the Jokerit-HIFK game, it seemed he had his hands/stick up at the level of Granlund head. HIFK won 3-0, but it seems Granlund is being targeted by the worst pests of the league. I'm hoping no concussion this time.

IMO it was a ridiculous call by the referee. 2min penalty for interference at most.
The 5 min major Ruutu got had more to do with him delivering the hit and Granlund taking it than the hit itself. I doubt Granlund was injured, certainly hope he didnt.

It was pretty similar to the Kronwall hit on Havlat few years ago except this one was million times softer and slower.

Granlund's just outside the top ten in goals with 6 goals in 14 games, but leads the league in points and assists with an outstanding number of 13 fluttering saucer passes. And those actually flutter as never seen in the history of hockey. The question is, how does he do it? Makes them flutter that much. Just makes you wonder.

EDIT: And I agree on Helminen, his saucer passes didn't flutter even when deflected, they were gyroscopically stable.

This is from the website of MTV3, which is a Finnish TV channel:

Mikael Granlundin pelinumero 64 on perua kasvattajaseurasta Laser HT:sta, joka nykyään tunnetaan nimellä Kiekko-Laser.

- Junnuna pelasin Laser HT:ssa numerolla 64. Se on sieltä sitten jäänyt ja se on vieläkin. Osoittaa kunnioitusta kasvattajaseuran suuntaan, Granlund kertoi MTV3:lle.

Quick translation:

Mikael Granlund's jersey number 64 comes from his youth team Laser HT, which is now known as Kiekko-Laser.

"While in juniors, I played in Laser HT with number 64, and it has stayed from there. Shows some respect towards them", Granlund told MTV3.

Like Bouchard, I worry every day that Granlund will get another concussion that will possibly end his career. That's going to be one fragile line with both him and Bouchard on it. Guess we'll have to put Sawdust with em'. :sarcasm:

This may be a legit concern but what can you do about it? Shy away from high traffic areas? Actually, some "commentators" have suggested Granlund should change his style of playing (less aggressive?) before hitting the show. Though Saku Koivu did it, he didn't do it beforehand but was forced to do it after injuries. So, I don't think it's an option for Granlund, either - unless he just has to do it because of injuries. Anyway it won't be easy and it may too late then as well.

We'll need some constant updates on the status of Granlund's saucer passes, let me know if even ONE flutters because then he's a bust and we should trade him for a 7th round pick to get SOMETHING back for him.

Don't know about his passes, but he tried to do some kind of a Ken Wu/Jeff Skinner ballerina spin, fell down and lost the puck. Obviously cannot skate at all.

HIFK 1-0 down after 1st period. 95-born, 2013-eligible Sasha Barkov scored for Tappara. Thank god there's actually one good Finnish prospect. :sarcasm:

What was that D doing there?! Nothing away from Granlund but once again bad play by the opposite defenseman. And nice pass, anyhow.

BTW. What bugs me a little in MG's amazing passes is that I have NEVER seen him giving a really good sound and proper saucer pass! Never. And I mean by that a pass that makes the puck fly like a saucer, as supposed, not like some unsteady butterfly. He gives dubious butterfly passes, not solid saucer passes as they are supposed to be given! It's weird but true. Period.

Never mind I decided to just jump back in the thread and found the right page on my first try. I can't believe this guy is serious. He must not know that perfect sauces are difficult to do when moving at full speed

I've only been listening to radio commentary, so can't really tell any precise data on his overall game. The two cons about his game that I've heard about have been stumbling when receiving a pass and getting checked in the offensive zone. Then again, he's been able to generate offensive chances, best one being a pass to Pesonen who hit the top bar. He's stripped few guys off the puck in the neutral zone too.

Does anyone know if the Wild would receive any compensation if Granlund doesn't sign and decides to become a free agent like Blake Wheeler did to the Coyotes a few years ago? Isn't there like a squeeze pick between the first and second round?
And a follow up to that. Don't NHL teams have four years to sign Euro's, three for NCAA, and two years for Canadian juniors?

Will Compensatory draft picks still exist?

Yes. Clubs that lost a Group 3 free agent to another club between July 1 and September 15, 2004 will be eligible to receive a compensatory draft choice in the 2005 Entry Draft slotted on the same basis as under the expired CBA. Going forward, clubs will no longer receive compensatory draft choices for the loss of unrestricted free agents but will receive such choices for the loss of unsigned first-round draft picks.

When teams lose their rights to a first round draft choice, because that player was not signed to a contract and consequently re-entered the entry draft or became an unrestricted free agent, they are awarded a compensatory draft pick. This selection will be the same numerical choice as the first round draft pick who was not signed, but in the second round. For example, if a team cannot sign the seventh overall first round draft choice, it will receive the seventh pick in the second round of the next draft as compensation.

But it doesn't matter because they will not lose Granlund. As a national celebrity in Finland, it would be a huge blow to his reputation if he refused to sign with his nation's captain's team.

In theory it would be the 39th pick in next year's draft. Compensation picks are only for not signing first round picks in which the team gets a 2nd rounder in line to what the original 1st round pick was.

However if Minnesota hypothetically couldn't sign Granlund I would think they trade him to get more like Calgary did with Tim Erixon.

Everyone besides NCAA is two years (or the corresponding June 1) from the draft to sign an ELC. NCAA players were four years from the draft to sign or else become a free agent (which is how Wheeler got around Phoenix) but I believe it's now the August 15th after your fourth year of college hockey.

Of course teams can also renounce rights to players like the Wild did with A.J. Thelen but that's another long story.

You have to remember that his team HIFK has been underperforming, BADLY. The only reason they aren`t even lower in the league is only that they have the best roster in the SM-liiga (you could argue that Jokerit has better).Even if they are playing like **** they can still win games. From what I have seen from the finnish posters here and in Jatkoaika (finnish ice-hockey forum) Granlund has been creating chances but nobody is able to score, and their goaltending and defence is a big mess. I have no doubt that if HIFK get their game going, Granlunds points start picking up also.

Could be. Matikainen is the kind of a coach that can motive players but not lead them tacticaly (from what I have heard from the Blues fans over the years), that has been done by the assisting coaches. In that case it should be also their ***** in line, not just Matikainen`s. However, I couldn`t see HIFK hiring Matikainen a good idea in the first place. The material of that roster isn`t suiting the style Matikainen plays.

Good points, but remember this - he's 19. I'd like to think/hope there is some upside to his game.

Excactly. And we also have to remember, he's in the army now. Despite it's very light version for professional athletes, It may disturb the summer training and schedules.

Also Mikko had some of his military obligations this summer. It's never good if you can't rest and exercise normally before a long and exhausting sesason.

Next year Mikael will be as ready as a man can. And then we'll see. Before that, we may only wait... and speculate

yeah thanks guys :D im making this issue bigger than it actually is. And i have seen like 7 HIFK games this season and Granlund were always creating chances, but since nobody scored on them i was thinking (maybe they weren't good enough(passes i mean)) stupid i know but considering HIFK lineup they should have scored most of those.

and tbh honest 60+ point 2nd liner wouldn't be bad at all and anything more than that should be considered as a bonus.. he has high hockey IQ best from any finnish hockey players and hopefully he can play with players that can score from his passes.

So end of the day we can speculate all we want, but we will only surely know what he is capable of when we see him in wild uniform..

Yeah, you got it right! Most of us hope, some of us hate, some of us hype. But none of us have the answer. No matter what we say or think, only who can answer the question is MG himself and the time. To this day he has answered all the questions, and what a way.. but

I remember, when Selanne went to NHL. I was one of the greatest disbelievers. Milky boy (he was a mannequin of a big dairy products company here in Finland), selfish skinny attacker, no defensive skills etc . And what has happened...

And like you said. I've never seen such a hockey sense in Finland. Never. What happens, happens. Grandlunds job is hockey and our job is to speculate. That's part of the big game and fun :)

As we're finns, we hope for the best but prepare for the worst. But after Selanne, I've decided never ever disbileve again! Mikael has the answer.

Not exactly, although Jalonen is trying to do that for Karjala Tournament, since the games are played in Finland and he has all this 'continuity' thing going on, trying to get as many World Champions from 2011 WHC team as possible. EHT games are often used for testing certain players to see if they could make the national team in WHC and generally help the players prepare for it.

I dunno, everybody is playing like crap in that game. No offensive chances on either side of the ice, lots of dump and chase, lots of decent defense, but not a lot of action. One of the Finnish wingers (looked like a lefty using a white stick, can't read the numbers or names worth a crap, can't find a roster) was pretty fun to watch though, forechecking and hitting like Clutterbuck.

Latexi trolling as usual 8). Anyways Janne Pesonen who plays in Granlunds line is making it a lot harder for him. Pesonen just got to the lineup because he was in the gold winning team. Otherwise has played bad the whole season and is afraid of physical play.

Thanks for the highlights, I said this in the prospect board, by my god, those passes are great, showing off his great vision. I kind of hope he plays on our top line with Koivu and Heatley, he needs a shooter there I would think. This would give him some time to acclimate himself to the NA game and not have the duties of a center. I really want him to start on the LW and eventually switch over to center.

And, with the seemingly emergence of Larsson, the drafting of Phillips, and the trading for Coyle, it really isn't imperative that he ever plays center. I know it's where we have all penciled him in at, but if he's better on the wing in NA, keep him there. I wouldn't want us to force him into a position when he could be more productive elsewhere.

Between Granlund and Bouchard, there would be a constant threat of players with the ability to pass through the eye of a needle on both scoring lines. Heatley would make it look so much easier than it really is. Then plug Granlund and Bouchard on the same PP line, tic-tac-toe.
