The Stanley Cup Finals are still underway between the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks, but much of the attention around the NHL has turned to the 2013 NHL Draft, scheduled for June 30th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The 2013 draft class is considered to be a deep group of prospects. By the mid-to-late first round, projections vary widely from scout to scout. As such, trade rumors surround the event, with some teams looking to trade down for additional picks while others look to move up to guarantee they get the player they covet. Several clubs have already acquired multiple picks in the first round, with Calgary and Columbus each holding three picks inside the top 30.… read more
While most of the world’s best 16- and 17-year-old hockey players gathered in Sochi, Russia to play in the Under-18 World Junior Championship in late April, it was 15-year-old Connor McDavid who stole the show.

McDavid dazzled scouts, fans and other players with an assortment of high-end skills, remarkable vision and goal-scoring ability that showed the world why he is the clear favorite for the top spot in the 2015 NHL Draft. McDavid scored eight goals in seven games, and added six assists to complete the tournament with 14 points. His totals nearly doubled those of Canada’s second-leading scorers Nick Baptiste and Morgan Klimchuk (both of whom are eligible for the 2013 draft).… read more
While the thought of drafting a solid two-way forward may not be appealing to the average hockey fan, judging by his steady rise in the 2013 NHL Draft rankings, it looks like hockey scouts are excited about the potential of Rimouski Oceanic center, Frederik Gauthier.

Gauthier made the most of his first season in the QMJHL, finishing fourth among all rookie scorers and earning a berth on that league's All-Rookie Team. In 62 games for the Oceanic, Gauthier scored 22 goals and added 38 assists for 60 points. But the Laval, Quebec native wins his highest marks for his already well-defined defensive skills, as evidenced by his +22 rating during the regular season.… read more
Adler, a small, rather nameless coastal resort just south of Sochi that is receiving worldwide attention as one of the hosting places of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, recently was packed with hockey scouts, journalists and the top players born in 1995 or later for the IIHF Under-18 World Championship.

The Czech Republic was one of the participating countries until suffering a 6-0 defeat at the hands of eventual gold-medal winners, Canada. The Czechs started the event with a crushing victory over Latvia, but only advanced from the preliminary round to seventh place at the tournament's end.

One of the stars of the Czech squad included underage, 17-year-old forward Jakub Vrána, who is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.… read more
