You're a Vancouver fan so i'll ask you how wise do you think it would have been for the team to have written off Kesler and Sedin at 23? Gagner history tells us is most likely to end up a wonderful, if not a luxury, player to have centering your 2nd line. Even better is the fact that he can play both wings. I know myself i'm happy with Gagner longterm as our #2, i've followed hockey a long time and players of his accomplishments at his age almost always end up terrific talents in their prime. Even guys like Paajarvi are tracking far ahead of the curve for their age. I don't mean to hijack the thread but people write off Edmonton's young complementy forwards far too easily, most of these guys develop like Vancouver's top 2 centers and not as rapidly as most 1st overalls do.

Last year only Stamkos, Tavares, Duchene, Stepan, Kadri were both younger and scored more. 4 of them centered their teams 1st line, 3 were considered franchise talents when drafted, and two of them are the biggest stars in the league. Kadri the advanced stats say should come back down to earth a little next year (just as they predicted for Eberle). Stepan had Nash on his wing all year, a big advantage compared to Gagner's linemates, but again he too is a wondeful young center. There's also Couture who scored 1 point less but is nearly a full year older despite being drafted in the same year. Other guys who were close to his age and production as top 90 scorers with less points were Hodgson (a bit younger, on the 1st line), Benn (played less games and had a better ppg, considered a probable franchise talent, 1st line), Seguin (on the wing, 1st line, considered a franchise talent), Ennis (scored less), and Turris (9 points less, 1st line).

It seems to me young Sam Gagner is in terrific company and is the victim of a double standard. People rip on him for his defense, and he could be better there but it's overstated IMO. Think about it, how many of the guys above are currently defensive stalwarts? Not many. All of them short of Duchene played on better teams, and all of them short of Ennis and possibly Kadri in better situations (i'd argue Kadri played in a ideal situation). Gagner also was very effective on the PK this season.

BTW if you are curious last year iirc there were only 8 younger/same age centers with more points (Stamkos, Tavares, P.Kane who played C that year, Benn, Stepan, Hopkins, O'Reilly, Henrique ). 4 of those 8 went 1st overall, Benn is a franchise talent, Henrique had Kovalchuk and Parise for linemates and scored much much less this year, and Stepan had a virtually identicle ppg. Other notables are his draft mate Couture who had more points, but again is older, and Seguin who had more points as well but played wing and is considered a franchise talent and 1st overall caliber player. Again it looks like Gagner is keeping some mighty impressive company.

It's unarguable to anyone playing attention that he's still developing, and it's a fact that he's keeping pace with the non franchise talent top young centers in the game. For a guy who watched the Sedin's and Kesler take their sweet old time to develop i'd have to argue you must have a short memory.

One thing is for sure, we can't go into next season with Bozak being our number 1 guy. I'll be extremely disappointed with the status quo, we need a big upgrade and way more depth at center if we're going to start making some real noise.

About LTIR, in fact useless during offseason, but don't forget teams can go over the cap by 10%, so, yes, the Bruins are totally fine, so no need to trade Krejci for peanuts. Placing Savard on LTIR and the Bruins would get almost $5M to re-sign Horton.
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,498,143; BONUSES: $972,500

I don't think Horton will be playing for free, but thank you for adding to my point: that roster doesn't even have Peverley on it. If the Bruins move Krejci they turn one of their Top 3 centers into two young, scoring wingers to compliment what they already have without even slightly upsetting their cap situation. Because the Blues' wingers are RFAs, Chiarelli would be able to negotiate his own cap-oriented contracts for long term.

Because the Bruins have three centers weighing in at more than $5M and it's starting to put a chokehold on their cap-structure, and no one wants to help Chiarelli solve that cap problem without taking something worth his. Boston fans can be OK with throwing whatever bottom-6 player into the scoring mix but it's poor injury-insurance for an 82 game season, and GMs around the league know that.

Keep in mind, everyone, that while Halak was wowing everyone in the playoffs, the Blues were dialing up Montreal's GM reminding him that they had two RFA goaltenders at the end of the season and they were going to have to move one. They couldn't get Price out of the deal, but they got Halak instead. Watch yourself Bruins fans, you're messing with a viciously-professional organization :sarcasm:

EDIT: Perron isn't a RFA anymore but he's making $3.8M AAV for three more years, and that's not going to rustle anyone's jimmies. Hell, Oshie's only making $4M. How could Boston not be wanting St. Louis's wingers?

If they draft Jones. I think the Avs would like to build the deal around an experienced defenseman or a young top 6 forward.

If they draft MacKinnon/Drouin then a top 4 defensemen is a must. I think they would look for a young but proven offensive defensemen.

Blues have a lot of young depth. I think the Blues could offer several good packages to the Avs.

Would you trade a guy like Toews or Kane (who admittedly have some more value than Monahan, but the principle holds) for UFA rights and 'ok' prospects?
