Hurricanes vs. Capitals. 7pm. Verizon Center. 10.8.2011.

Lets get this **** started. Will update with lineups as they become available.

Neuvirth reported to be the starter for the season opener via Vogel: http://dumpnchase.com/?p=994

Quote:

I wasn’t surprised when I learned earlier this week that Caps coach Bruce Boudreau planned to start goaltender Michal Neuvirth in Saturday’s season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes. Neuvirth won 27 games for the Capitals last season, carried the team early in the campaign when he was arguably its most valuable player, and carried the mail in the postseason, playing every minute of all nine Stanley Cup playoff contests.

In the scheme of things, who plays the first game is rather meaningless. There are 82 games in an NHL season. I think it’s a great gesture of Boudreau to give Neuvirth — who was very sharp during the pre-season — the opening night nod. Expect some to try to stir up a goaltending controversy here; this is a football town that is conditioned to such things when it comes to quarterbacks.

Carolina Hurricanes (40-31-11in 2010-11, 0-1 in 2011-12)
Washington Capitals (48-23-11 in 2010-11)

Washington opens its highly anticipated 2011-12 regular season slate on Saturday night when the Carolina Hurricanes hit Verizon Center. Each of Washington’s first two games of the season will be played on home ice against a Southeast Division rival, beginning with Saturday’s contest against the Canes.

Michal Neuvirth gets the opening night call in goal for Washington, the second such assignment of his NHL career. Neuvirth was in net for the Caps a year ago tonight when they dropped a 4-2 road decision to the Thrashers in what turned out to be the final opening night in Atlanta.

Is it still a coin flip as to Mojo or Perreault?

usiel 10-07-2011 08:57 PM

I hazard to guess that Perreault will get a jersey.

EYEuhFRAYtee 10-07-2011 09:02 PM

I was wondering who would be the first to crack and put up the GDT a day early.

You weak weak man.

NHL gives us a layup to open. Home with visitor on back to back.

Try not to suck.

Hivemind 10-07-2011 11:11 PM

Let Vokoun play at 2C.

Come on, you know that spot is reserved for all our "versatile" players who are in no way overpaid or beneficiaries of Boudreau's nonexistent nepotism. Remember how versatile Fleischmann was at center? Who can forget Sloan bravely leading the 4th line forecheck? And Laich can not only play center but defense as well :amazed:

We'll probably see Schultz there if he starts having more of an off year than usual.

MoJoSauce 10-07-2011 11:39 PM

I am guessing lineup will be:
Ovi-Backstrom-Knuble
Semin-Johansson-Brouwer
Chimera-Laich-Ward
Hendricks-Halpern-Beagle

Green-Schultz
Carlson-Alzner
Wideman-Hjawsermasrlick

Nuevi

I'm glad you posted that. Frequent posters here have diverse opinions on many topics but in the end we are all Capitals fans and we should respect a difference in opinions and welcome debate.

Caps win 6-2.

Brouwer
Carlson

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 10-08-2011 01:13 AM

Big win for the caps, 6-1.

Ovy starts his monster season with 4 points.

So pumped to get back to VC for hockey after missing the entire preseason.

usiel 10-08-2011 01:25 AM

Actually have tickets for the season opener from a season ticket coworker. Taking my dad who has had some health issues this past year being in his mid 70s. Best dad in the world and sublimely intimidating following in his footsetps if I ever become a parent. Time is now with one's parents.

Atlas 10-08-2011 01:50 AM

Caps 4-3. Ovie gets the game winner from Dino and Huntsy.

6 goals ... Caps hockey would definitely be back. :yo:

The Bolts hung 5 on them in their home opener, but something tells me we'll only manage perhaps 3. Maybe I should be more open to them "trying to balance" between 09/10 and 10/11, but I fear it's going to be conservative, all-defense at least for now.

Canes 2 (Skinner, Ruutu)
Caps 3 (Laich, Knuble, Green)

Go Caps!

Skoorbnut 10-08-2011 08:40 AM

I cant wait to watch the game tonight. Luckily the girlfriend has work till 10 ;)

Dont worry, when it happens you'll be all right, i had the same thoughts, but parenting is mostly instinctive.
I hope our boys don't disappoint tonight and you guys get to celebrate 5 or 6 tallies!

Caps fans unite!

sk84fun_dc 10-08-2011 09:33 AM

So with people focusing on Perreault over Johansson and Neuvirth getting the start; I'm still wondering why there isn't a 7th dman up here and then the news comes that Wideman is not skating again this morning. (and Collins isn't practicing but beat writers report his gear is in his stall.) Anyway, Collins played last night for Hershey, but sounds like he may not be playing for the Bears tonight at WBS.

update (sort-of): SWhyno Stephen Whyno
"#Caps spokesman says Dennis Wideman will play tonight and that this is an optional skate. Will ask Bruce Boudreau about D-Man."

Usiel - I hope you two have a blast and see a win!
