Where in the World is Kirill Kabanov ?

Once again, our poster boy for confusion, angst, and bewildement is in the Hockey Twilight Zone. Though this time, he can't be blamed. I actually thought he played well enough to get a 9 game look. But now he has been sent down, but apparently he has no where to be sent down to. His junior team already has reached their quota of 2 International players, so there's no spot for Kabanov. There are rumors he may be headed to the Swedish Elite League, which in my personal opinion, would be a mistake (does he really need 4th line minutes like our 2nd round pick Sundstrom ?).

This needs to be resolved immediately, Kabanov needs to be playing NOW. I feel bad for the guy, seems every year, crazyness follows him, though this year, he doesn't deserve this nonsense. I hope his junior team trades his rights asap.

IceAce 10-10-2011 10:47 AM

he'll likely just get dealt to another team in the Q.

Chapin Landvogt 10-10-2011 10:59 AM

Would like to see him in Sweden, especially the Allsvenskan. He could learn a lot there while getting valuable ice time!

NYI94wasaFLUKE9 10-10-2011 11:07 AM

Screw the SEL if he's not getting more then 12 minutes a night. Really sucks that he can't play in the AHL.

StrongIslanders90 10-10-2011 11:14 AM

can he be traded to the OHL or WHL? or can teams only trade players within thier league?

Would love to see him on a line with Strome in Niagra.

Where is he?

Well on Saturday night he was trolling around the Coliseum concourse schmoozing with anyone and everyone. He was in his trademark GQ gray suit. Friendly guy and wants to be with the big club BAD.

Saw him. He was surrounded by a mob of russians, guess he had family over to watch our dismal performance.

Why can't he play in the 'A'?

He was drafted out of the CHL so he can't play in the AHL before what the NHL considers 20 years old (on account of a deal signed with the CHL).

thedonger 10-10-2011 11:54 AM

If it's true that the reason he hasn't reported to the armada is because they have their import quota, then I'm confused as to why they haven't either traded him or given him permission to play in the ahl. If that truly is the case, what a dick move by the armada.

Maybe the Armada are working on a move, or the Islanders are working on a move to get him playing in the SEL.

I doubt that the CHL would want any of their member teams giving permission for their players to play in the AHL. It could set a bad precedence. I don't remember it happening before either.

Good point on all accounts.

He'd have to get waived, clear waivers in the Q, then he could sign in another CHL league as a free agent. He cant be traded from the Q to the OHL or WHL.

Can someone explain the logic of the Armada keeping Kabanov on their roster since he cannot play? The only reason can be because they think they have a trading chip. Is there a team in the Q that hasn't filled their international 2-player quota?

jdr016 10-10-2011 01:52 PM

Why can't he just go to Bridgeport?

Too young, and the Armada hasn't given permission to send him there.

RoseTintedVisor 10-10-2011 06:46 PM

Can we just give Armada WangBucks?

leaponover 10-11-2011 12:09 AM

This needs to become a priority for Isles management.

drive45 10-11-2011 01:07 AM

I don't see why he can't play for Armada, as they only have 1 foreign (also Russian) player (Nikolaev), and many Q teams have more. The only reason to go to SEL that I can think of is more $, but I think his family is well-off and the Q would be much better prep for NHL. What I've been reading on the Q board indicates that Armada might trade KK to Shawinigan, because apparently Armada is in rebuilding mode, and KK appeals more to a win-now organization.

he was with some buddies from Jersey....It amazed me to see how many people recognized KK, but what amazed me even more was to see how willing K was to stop and talk to everyone and anyone.

My impression is that Kabanov LOVES the spotlight, so any attention that comes his way is like a warm blanket for him.

Viktor Hertzberg is their other Euro player (to make 3, 1 more than CHL rules allow). According to an article a couple days ago (http://www.nordinfo.com/Armada/2011-...-les-Foreurs/1) the Armada are still talking to KK:

"Le directeur général de l'Armada, Joël Bouchard, continue de discuter avec l'attaquant russe Kirill Kabanov, qui a été retranché par les Islanders de New York."

(Translated): "The General Manager of the Armada, Joel Bouchard, continues to talk with the Russian forward Kirill Kabanov, who was cut by the New York Islanders."

I hope he goes to the Armada soon. They play the Mooseheads on Thursday and I'd like to see KK play in person.

WangMustGo 10-11-2011 04:53 PM

Hopefully they allow him to play in the AHL, really think that could be great for his development. He needs to be playing hockey already.

Aaron Vickers 10-12-2011 11:23 AM

Also, Kabanov cant play for the Armada because he hasn't reported to the club.

I think he's bound for Sweden but haven't heard an official word on it yet.

Some interesting quotes from him via Sports.ru this morning:

Hockey Break says he's to be loaned to the SEL on his twitter:

Quote:

Kirill Kabanov to be loaned to a SEL club, his QMJHL team already has reached their quota of 2 International players
Couple quotes from the article Aaron Vickers posted that stood out to me:

Quote:

“Everyone [in Russia] kept saying ‘NHL, NHL’,” Kabanov told Igor Eronko of Russian website Sports.ru. “You get there and will be famous. As a boy I had an impression [the NHL] was paradise. But when I came here I realized that the made-up image and reality are different things.”...

“Perhaps I made a mistake that I didn’t stay [in the KHL] and went [to North America] hoping I’d be the number one pick,” Kabanov said.
It's like he thought he was going to come here and be a super star and is now pissed he had to work for it.. I still hope this guy pans out he seems like a good kid and a very talented player but there's just always some sort of BS surrounding him.
