Kurtenblog Is No More

So the boys have hung it up for now, looks to be a parting of the ways? Or just retooling?

No more blog, no more radio show.

Even their last post is hilarious. RIP Kurtenblog.

PS — We’re not leaving the business.
It's a shame that they didn't get a real run on the midday show. I can't listen to Moj. I think they're finding out that the guys in this industry aren't giving them much respect. It really is an "Old Boys" industry. Frankly, they were far more entertaining than anything on the air right now.

At the end they say they are not leaving the business.

My guess would be that their contract ran out and they have gotten an offer from another publication or something of the sort.

Burke's Evil Spirit 10-13-2011 12:01 PM

I bet they'll come back with more of a "national profile" - IE, not just writing about the Canucks. It's the logical next step.

As much as I look forward to them pillorying the Leafs on a regular basis I'll still miss their micro-analysis of the Canucks. Jason Botchford is now the only person covering the team worth reading at all.

A few decent Canucks blogs have popped up in the last little while, but none of them are even close.

But there are no other publications or radio stations in Vancouver. My guess is they start a more general NHL blog, so they can have more of a national profile. Which will still be worth reading but I'll miss their Canucks coverage.

snepsts27 10-13-2011 12:04 PM

May be right, have to start going by their real names, drop the 'blog' thing to get more mainstream.

Rogers Sports Radio. Book it.

attellis 10-13-2011 12:21 PM

Rogers Radio would make total sense. They'd be looking for talent and so why not grab two of the best, even if they are "young". I could see them doing a morning to midday show with Dave Pratt doing an afternoon.

It could be something smaller like 24 hours, Metro, Georgia Straight, West Ender, etc etc

Their style of writing would lend to a more casual publication like a daily / weekly paper.

Also, the Sun and the Globe and Mail are possible, but highly unlikely. Even though the Sun and the Province are co-owned, they have completely different management - poaching each others staff has happened in the past.

As for Radio you are correct when you speak of all sports radio, but they could end up with an evening slot on CKNW or something similar.

Lets not forget TV - Shaw, City, Sportsnet etc are all hypothetically possible.

I'm not implying any of these will end up happening, I'm just rebutting your statement that the Province and Team are the only media outlets in Vancouver. What sort of messed up world would that be? LOL

yapperface 10-13-2011 12:34 PM

Pass it to Bulis is wayyyyy better.

Their levelheaded comedic analysis keeps me sane. And if anybody hasn't read their piece on media bias from June 12, go back and find it. A real treal.

Anyways, when I found PITB, I stopped reading the Kurtenblog.

Wetcoaster 10-13-2011 12:34 PM

IMHO no real loss.

Now if Sekeres would just disappear from print and the airwaves that would be a further massive improvement.

R0bert0 Lu0ng0 10-13-2011 12:34 PM

Bummer. Hope they resurface somewhere else soon.

Considering Murphy and others are tweeting congrats, I'm sure they will.

stickside 10-13-2011 12:51 PM

as the old saying goes...never quit a job until you've got another one lined up. considering these dudes came from relative obscurity to a regular spot in the daily rag, it's safe to say they've got another gig. congrats to the dudes for climbing the ladder one rung at a time.

These would all be a step down.

Fair enough, although I bet if they were jumping ship to the Sun they would still call themselves the Kurtenblog. Joining the G&M's blog on hockey is a definite possibility though. Downside is they'll undoubtedly be less Canucks-focused.

Hey if they end up replacing Dan Russell or playing a part of Rogers Sportsnet Radio I'll be the first person with a non-stop erection. I hope you're right.

Heh, have you seen their youtube videos? They ain't exactly telegenic. Mind you that doesn't keep Steve Simmons off TV....

mrmyheadhurts 10-13-2011 12:58 PM

They've simply out grown their blog. They have left their cocoon and are ready to spread their wings. Fly beautiful butterflies, fly!

Never implied otherwise. Totally agree it would be.

Yeah, I think these are the least likely scenarios.

LOL never seen them, but hey, even Pratt was on TV at one point.

crazycanuck 10-13-2011 01:14 PM

Well it sounds like they are going onto bigger and better things but damn gonna miss them on team 1040. But damn, I lost my two favourite radio shows/podcasts in the past 2 months.

I wonder if CBC may be an option, they did lose Jeff Marek to Sportsnet. HNIC iDesk featuring the Kurtenbloggers?

timorousme 10-13-2011 01:15 PM

i used to like these guys but the constant self-deprecation got to be too grating and one note and their concept of the internet seemed rooted in 2005.

plus, on the radio they always seem to dance around whatever they're talking about without ever diving into it

and yeah pass it to bulis beats them on comedy and substance easily

Lucbourdon 10-13-2011 01:32 PM

They will still in the air waves, no chance they are gone for good.

They are arguably the best on team1040 right now, are young, smart and funny.

They must have got a damn big offer from somewhere.

That's why I enjoy them so much. Most sports guys take themselves way too seriously. These guys get it. They talk about sports for a living.

snepsts27 10-13-2011 01:46 PM

Ya, Bulis is OK, but I enjoy the Kurtenbloggers way more. Not only their Cauncks/Hockey coverage...but they are well rounded sports guys, able to talk NFL, CFL, MLB, MLS or UFC. They branch out way more than just a 'Canuck Blog', and I consider myself to be a sports fan, not just a Canucks fan so this appeals to me.

As for who is funnier, that is totally a matter of taste. Personally, I find them hilarious. Could do with less cats though.

it got so tired though

rypper 10-13-2011 02:20 PM

it does say at the bottom...

ps - we're not leaving the business.

pps - cause we aren't qualified to do anything else.

I suspect we see them again soon.
