Honest Question

First off I want to state I am not here to troll and honest to god I am truly curious about this. What was the reaction to the Gomez for McDonagh trade at the time? I have always been huge Rangers fan but it was only recently I started following the rest of the league. Looking at it now it obviously looks like a one sided trade, but for Montreal fans did it look that way at the time. Thanks in advance for you answers.

Well we got Gomez.

We got our #1 center that we coveted. :sarcasm:

Basically, we all got the chair and the rope ready to go when Gomez was acquired.

Watsatheo 10-16-2011 09:12 PM

It's funnier because it was first thought of as only Higgins for Gomez and people were still disappointed.

donghabs98 10-16-2011 09:14 PM

man look at the votes on the 2nd thread

Teufelsdreck 10-16-2011 09:17 PM

It was Gainey's second worst move. The first was appointing Carbonneau as head coach.

Hugo Sham 10-16-2011 09:21 PM

awful trade for habs and a clear sign bob gainey had lost his ability to make good trades and / or evaluate talent - or he blindly trusted his pro scouting to gauthier at the time which was also a failure. the salary dump of gomez on us was bad enough - but to include Macdonagh in the deal was absolutely bush league, idiotic, unprofessional. baffling etc...take your pick of adjectives. this trade was the move that sealed the incompetency that made up the last couple of years of Gainey's tenure

Still hate giving up McD.

Playing over 25 mins a game this season. We could use a guy like him right now.

Yeah, but what we didn't know back then was that Scotty would train harder this summer and win us back with some stellar performances this year :sarcasm:

The sad part is that they were right to be pissed.

Anyhow, reading those old threads can be good for a laugh or two (see http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=610103)

But reading the Gomez thread is just depressing

DekeLikeYouMeanIt 10-16-2011 10:01 PM

Ugh why'd you have to bring it up? :(

WhiskeySeven* 10-16-2011 10:10 PM

I was so wrong. I thought Gomez was a good acquisition and would turn it around. I was most disappointed by the Gionta signing actually.

edit: My saddest day on HF was when Gainey dumped Ribeiro for nothing. And I guess I was "right" to be upset about that.

Hmph, feels bad to be right, feels bad to be wrong in this case.

Jake5 10-16-2011 10:31 PM

the reaction was absolute shock.
at the time (and currently as well,i guess) Gomez was thought of as having negative value, no GM will ever willingly take on that contract, etc. and yet we GAVE UP assets to acquire him.

Not fair. Although many felt as you say, many didn't. This is a prospects board at base, as you so well know (big fan of yours here) and McDonagh was a key focus of interest in reaction to the trade. For me he was the trade. I don't remember if I expressed it clearly here but my objection from the first was entirely about McDonagh. Higgins for Gomez was fair, Valentenko was a throw in ( I was very high on him myself, but he'd gone back to Russia already so he wasn't part of the future here.). McDonagh was a future core player, EXACTLY the kind of player we currently lack. I disctinctly remember hearing about the trade on the radio and storming out of the shed where I was working (long story) and yelling at my father in outrage that we'd given away a bruising, minute crunching prospect. My blood was boiling. I've since cooled a bit and given management more credit for the overall rebuild than I did in that moment, but it was the loss of McDonagh that had me outraged. Nothing else. I'm not alone in that, I suspect.

If the players/owners negotiations work out - teams may get a 1 time buyout for roster players. And I'm pretty sure that Gomez is top on the list for buyout on the habs.

LyricalLyricist 10-16-2011 11:07 PM

I tried to ignore how much that trade sucked. lol Not working.

Basically, Gainey was looking at a first line center to replace Koivu, he apparently worked extremmely hard to get Lecavalier but it failed, Gainey had to react quickly to remain a competitive team, Im convinced Gomez wasnt his B plan either but that was probably his best option at that moment.. (the Lecavalier fail has been IMO the end of Gainey as the Habs GM) We all know now that this trade was one sided when you look at this on paper, but some will say that trade helped Gainey to attract Gomez's good friend and future captain Brian Gionta here, maybe even Cammalleri at some extend on the UFAs market.. We all know how it works.. So at the end, Gainey doesnt look to bad in that story.. Some people think its easy to be a GM, they are doing trades on their XBOX and probably think they would do a better job.. Those guys need a good reality check..

The Kremelin Wall* 10-16-2011 11:46 PM

**** Gomez. He's the only player I feel disgusted to see wear the CH. Wearing Saku's number on top of it is like he's ****** Maurice Richard's skeleton to me.

JOKER 192 10-16-2011 11:47 PM

Guys ,your missing the big picture. The only reason this trade happened was because the NHL veto'ed the LeCavalier trade. Now imagine, if you will, your team without gomez, without Gionta (probably), with LeCavalier (bigger cap hit) without Subban, without Pleks,-1st round draft pick and I can't remember who else.I gotta think the league saved ur ass here.

Nope, he's not getting bought out.
