Big Trade or Tanking ?

If we keep loosing like this, what would management do ? A big trade or Tanking ? (Fail For Nail)

How long would it take management to do something about this ?

They don't need neither of those options. We're only 6 games in! There is a good core of players on that team. They need:
  1. A coaching change; and
  2. to add some muscle in the line-up.

Tweaking, not blowing things up!

gusfring 10-21-2011 09:54 AM

Won't happen. They need to keep selling out the building and protect their season ticket holders.

Habs Junkie 10-21-2011 09:56 AM

I say sign McCabe and Madden

Aurel Joliat 10-21-2011 09:58 AM

A trade for what ? Give prospects or draft picks, finish 8th and being eliminated in the first round ?

Bullsmith 10-21-2011 09:59 AM

Yes making trades in a panic is a good solution. Maybe Rejean Houle could advise the team.

Mathradio 10-21-2011 10:00 AM

Tanking should only be used as a last resort. We will need to get rid of JM first. By the time we are about to hit that last resort it will be late enough for us not to get a better pick than #2.

BeerHell 10-21-2011 10:06 AM

Whatever Happens, I hope we get the second pick.

Why? three non-win scenarios if we get first pick

We grab Yakupov, Grigorenko goes second
Grigorenko goes and has similar or better carreer then Yakupov...the lamentations last for as long as they are playing, why did we pick the smurf...

We grab Grigorenko and Yakupov goes second
Yakupov has a better carreer then Grigorenko...the lamentations last for as long as they are playing, why can't we pick the better player we never do fire timmins

Finnally we grab one of Grigorenko or Yakupov
and one of the NA guys drafted after them has a simillar or better carreer, the lamentations last for as long as they are playing, why did we have to pick a russian, they are lazy and won't play for anyone else but their country...

A coaching change during the season is not "tweaking".

WestIslander 10-21-2011 10:22 AM

I don't think Montreal will EVER tank, I think either the coach and GM get fired by seasons end or they go after a serious name on the trade market and trade either Leblanc, Beaulieu, Tinordi or even Kristo and/or a 1st round draft pick.

Tusk 10-21-2011 10:23 AM

Never say never to any possible interesting scenarios that may present themselves, but certainly say never to making a reactionary deal and forcing your own hand with desperation.

I know last night was depressing, but I'm not convinced this team is dead in the water, most of us know how well they can play when they stick to the plan and hustle, it's really that simple for this team. It's too early to think huge changes need to be made, biggest things missing right now are pride and heart and I don't think this group has completely lost either.

WestIslander 10-21-2011 10:25 AM

As long as Price, Pacioretty and Subban are NOT traded I am happy!!!

This early in the season? It absolutely is. Closer to playoffs? Maybe not. At least in my opinion.

We still have some really good young players in Eller, Subban, Price, Patches, trading away our 1st rounder and some prospects is really not the way to go right now and try to solve something. This was a solid team last year and we added Cole, wait a little longer and if things don't work out then try to dump a few players on their last year like Gill, Spacek and Moen. I wouldn't make a big trade with young players picks or prospects to salvage a season. If we make a big trade it's because we are able to move a Gomez which I doubt

I've always been against tanking, but I think it's time for a little re-build. The biggest that needs to be changed is management.

otto bond 10-21-2011 10:47 AM

A re-build, When we've already got Subban, Price, Pacioretty and Eller with the team?

I think if this season fails (judged at the end), you have to at least think about moving proven, valuable players like Pleks and Cammy for unproven assets with high potential who will improve at or near the same rate as our young core players (PK, Eller, Price, Patches, and "safe" prospects like Leblanc, Bournival, Gallagher), allowing for a shortened rebuild.

If Washington doesn't get to the cup finals, I think they'll be done with Semin. If, at the same time, we determine that our foundation has too many cracks, then I'd like to see:

Cammy, Pleks, Tinordi/Weber/Kristo
for
Semin(UFA), Kuznetsov, COL 1st (assuming they finish in the bottom 5, as predicted)

It's an extremely high risk move (we'd have plenty of cap space but absolutely need to get Semin signed), but it allows us to get younger, more dynamic and potentially returns 3 first line players.

Wash would want to win now and have expiring contracts which allow them to add two proven first line players (and PO performers) for two prospects and an unwanted UFA.

Imagine in 3-4 years, when the Gomez, Gionta, Cole contracts expire:

Patches - Grigorenko/Galchenyuk - Semin
AK - Eller - Kuznetsov
Bournival - Leblanc - Gallagher

UFA?2013 1st?Tinordi? - Subban
Beaulieu - Gorges
Emelin - Diaz

Price

First of all, big trades are hard to do in the cap world, money has to go both ways and still fit under the cap.

Second, I think it would be dumb to try and make a big trade right now since every GM in the NHL is looking to **** you when your team is struggling.
