Ryan Ellis

Just curious,
Don't you guys think it would benefit Ryan Ellis largely to get a ton of games in this season in the NHL so he can learn from suter and weber? Especially considering one of them is very unlikely to be here next season?
I think we should call Ellis up ASAP and let the big boys teach him the game at the NHL level

WartracePred 10-24-2011 11:56 AM

He'll learn more playing big minutes in MIL. Snowballs chance in hell Trotz brings him up, splits up Weber and Suter, then places Ellis alongside either.

If Suter and Weber both spent time in MIL, you can't argue that the AHL is the best course for Ellis.

Frankie will be back soon, which will stabilize the third pairing.

TMI 10-24-2011 12:39 PM

Unlikely based on what? It's not even Halloween yet.

And no, I think Ellis benefits more from playing top pairing minutes in Milwaukee than he does playing ~10 minutes per night in Nashville. He needs to show that he can play in the A before he is brought up, anyway. I don't see how rushing him here benefits either party.

Legionnaire11 10-24-2011 12:45 PM

If Ellis had shown more NHL readiness in the pre-season then it might be easier to consider giving him a chance here. But as it stands, I think the AHL is his best bet until at least after the new year.

I disagree. I think the A is obviously a great spot for him to develop as well but I think he should get some call ups this season and play at least 10-15 games in a predators uniform.
He doesn't have to be paired with Shea or Ryan but just to see how they carry themselves in locker room and on the ice.

It's not like Ellis was 'just' drafted and is 18. He has been the most dominate defenseman ever in junior ranks. This kid is the real deal and I would just think playing on a team with both suter and weber before one or both bounce out of town would also be highly beneficial to his development as playing top minutes in Milwaukee.

Did Ekholm play in Milwaukee? Just curious

No, he came from Sweden and went back to Sweden.

From the way the PP has looked recently, just to have him up here for that sounds good to me.

Now that's something I can agree with

maplepred 10-24-2011 05:54 PM

I just think once Ryan gets up here. He will wow everyone. I'd like to see at least 10-15 games as mentioned, but trotz may have hard time letting him go back to Milwaukee.

Either way, I'm sure we see him at some point this season, I've never been more excited about a predators prospect as I am about Ellis since legwand in 1998.

hope it turns out different

I would also like to see Ryan Ellis at some point. But now that Boullion is coming back, I just don't see it happening anytime soon. Patience.

you want him to come up and suck?

Seth Lake 10-25-2011 09:20 AM

Bringing up Ryan Ellis to fix the PP is not what's best for his future right now. Although he was the call up had Weber been suspended at Calgary, from what I'm hearing from Milwaukee, Ellis has not been the Ads best defenseman and has struggled at times adjusting to the speed and size of the pro game.

Obviously he is new to that level of play and does have some great moments, but NHL hockey is about consistency. Ellis needs to continue to learn at the AHL level till he is ready to take that next step. Bringing him up as a PP specialist 12 games (7 playoff/5 regular season) into his pro career would risk greatly stiffling his growth moving forward...

kakemono 10-25-2011 09:59 AM

I see a Blum-ish path for Ellis.

He'll probably stay in Milwaukee until he is needed and then come up and walk right into the role. The only question I have is whether it will be this year. The longer the need waits, the more likely I see Josi getting healthy and getting the call. Supposedly Josi was better than Blum but his injuries are what passed the call-up along to Blum (right? - i think).

edit: Nice problem to have... hmm... do we bring up the best dmen in Junior hockey history or do we bring up someone better?

I think what the poster was saying is that they hope he turns out to be better than legwand did. As I said I had not been as excited about a predator prospect since legwand.

Also, very much in agreeing with the post that says he will be a lot like blum's path. I think when he does get the call he will walk right in and make it very difficult for coach trotz and send him back down.

I noticed Ryan was wearing number 49 in Pre season. Will that be his NHL number once he gets a roster spot? I only ask because all through juniors he wore #6, and obviously that number is taken in Nashville (hopefully for years to come)

Maybe Ellis won't be here for 13 or more years.

Elever 10-25-2011 05:17 PM

Do you guys think that Ellis will get a single game this year? I'm guessing he will, Blum got a good run last year and I like Ellis' offensive potential more but it probably won't be as much as Blum got, maybe a short stint.

Or would Josi make his debut this year before Ellis does? I think he was on IR and already made the team?

codeyh 10-25-2011 05:27 PM

I don't expect Ellis up. If Josi's ready, he would be up before Ellis.

In fact, had Josi not gotten hurt in camp, he would have started in Nashville instead of Ekholm

ellis wont be touching number 6 as long as shea is here. So yea i would imagine that he will continue to wear 49 unless theres another number he would like that is currently taking by someone already on the squad who may not be here when he gets called up or whatever

codeyh 10-25-2011 06:19 PM

I remember Klein wearing 6 in Milwaukee.

Just sayin'. lol

I'd like to see Ellis wear 77

TMI 10-25-2011 07:50 PM

Just give him #4. He can be the next Franson :naughty:

crazy Kassian 11-06-2011 10:04 PM

I haven't seen any AHL games but 7 points in 10 games and a +4 is very impressive especially for a rookie. Makes him 3rd in points on the team and 2nd in +/-

I've always heard his skating is not good, has he improved in that department? I don't think size is an issue for him

I hope he isn't anything like 5'10 Tobias Enstrom for you guys :sarcasm:
